In short (whole book)
Kirstin receives an amnesiac human boy from a summoning crystal, names him Trent, and nearly breaks his loyalty through neglect and a punishing order. Her brother Michael and Duke Lewis Al'dross protect Trent's secret capacity for seven classes and seven professions, while Sergeant Cullen begins his field training. Trent clears the Burning Lake's Trial of Perseverance and becomes a Survivalist before his companions are swept into the Land of the Undying Lord. Separated from the main party with Tersa, he frees the Al'rashian exile Orion Embra. The three become family through the Rite of Blood, which transforms Trent into an Al'rashian and restores Orion's spirit-summoner power. They rejoin Francis's besieged group after Matthias sacrifices himself against an orc assault. Cullen kills the trial's dread-knight guardian, saving the survivors. In the reward hall, the keeper explains that Trent is an Al'rashian bond rather than a summon, though his origin and intended partner remain uncertain.
Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)
Kirstin's party clears the fifth floor of the Al'drossford trial and receives a summoning crystal. Instead of the powerful creature expected, it produces an amnesiac, apparently human boy at level 0. Kirstin regards him as useless, and the contract turns her careless instruction to train into a punishing order that forces him to run through exhaustion and injury. Michael, Kirstin's older brother and captain of the Duke's Guard, discovers the boy and compels Kirstin to stop the order. She names him Trent and delegates his care to Michael. Trent's status contains seven class slots and seven profession slots, an exceptional secret Michael shares only with trusted authorities. Duke Lewis Al'dross finds Trent equally suited to every tested path and provides his first abilities, while arranging practical experience under concealment. Meanwhile, Kirstin's apparent scout Alan reveals himself privately as Lieutenant Alistern, a veteran officer serving the Duke. Alistern is tasked with helping Kirstin's party recognize Trent's value before the boy's steadily falling loyalty breaks their contract.
Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)
Sergeant Cullen assumes responsibility for Trent's training and pairs him with the young recruit Tersa. Trent learns Appraisal, Herbalism, Unarmed Combat, Riding, Animal Care, and basic weapons work at unusual speed. Because his active contract prevents a guard oath and public attention could expose his potential, Cullen takes him with selected recruits on a concealed field expedition. Duke Lewis tells Cullen the truth about Trent's origin and fourteen advancement slots. He also explains that the local trial is overdue for a full clear and may eventually release monsters into the region. During the journey, Cullen uses training quests to give Trent his first experience, while Tersa becomes a supportive companion. Kirstin begins to reconsider her treatment after Michael explains that the bond affects both her and Trent as his loyalty declines, and she rides north with her party to find him. At the expedition camp, Arisa teaches Trent his first spark of magic, which immediately leads him to supporting mana skills. A premature test against a horned hare proves that rapid learning has not yet made Trent combat-ready, so Cullen shifts him back toward controlled preparation.
Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)
While gathering herbs, Trent discovers the Burning Lake and enters its hidden Trial of Perseverance. He endures escalating pain, becomes the first successful challenger, and gains rare attributes, experience, soulbound weapons, a protective cowl, and Heart of the Inferno. A fire spirit tells him he is not entirely human but leaves his origin unexplained. Trent returns physically changed, chooses the advanced Survivalist class, and begins adapting to live combat under Cullen and Corporal Francis. Kirstin reaches the camp and asks for Trent back, admitting she mishandled him, but Cullen retains control of his training. A large howler pack is then drawn toward the camp for a planned defense. Alistern supplies Trent with Create Traps, allowing them to build a layered field of hazards. The combined recruits, guards, and adventurers destroy the pack, although their fire magic threatens the grassland. Immediately afterward, a new instant trial forms around the battlefield and takes the entire group into the Lands of the Undying Lord.
Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)
The Land of the Undying Lord requires its challengers either to survive two months or defeat its Guardian. With supplies and equipment largely missing, Cullen and Alistern leave to hunt the Guardian while Corporal Francis commands the lower-level group. Trent becomes its scout, mapping the region and learning to track danger. He and Kirstin establish an effective fighting pattern against undead, but Trent and Tersa fall through a portal while leading the group toward shelter. Francis's remaining party occupies a ruined fort as skeletal cavalry approaches. Joel specializes as a scout, Dirk becomes heavy infantry, Kirstin adds the Warrior class, and Lyra develops into a battle healer whose purification is vital against undead. They repel a difficult siege and destroy two mounted commanders, but the victory consumes scarce magic and leaves Dirk badly injured. Kirstin's unauthorized assault also brings a severe reprimand from Francis over divided command. The portal sends Trent and Tersa into the Undying Lord's prison. Trent's cowl and fire abilities let them navigate the darkness and fight undead, while his crafting provides Tersa with improvised protection. Their cooperation improves, but they remain isolated, low on resources, and unable to return to the main force.
Story so far - through chapter 31 (this book)
Inside the prison, Trent and Tersa develop a coordinated method for fighting respawning undead. They find Orion Embra, an Al'rashian exile imprisoned under the title Kinslayer. Trent refuses to leave him and accepts a rescue quest. With Orion casting through the bars, the pair defeats the prison warden, frees Orion, and divides the recovered equipment. Orion then trains Trent in swordsmanship as the three escape together. Their shared party accelerates Trent and Tersa's growth but also strengthens the trial's opposition. Tersa becomes a Brute, while Trent's soulbound Sorrow and Strife change into heavy blades that channel his fire. In a hidden spirit field, Trent completes his exploration quest, learns Spirit Flame, and recovers three sets of equipment and techniques. The cache includes relics that restore Orion's sealed spirit-summoner class. Orion explains that his brother betrayed their clan and that killing him led to Orion's exile. He invites Trent and Tersa into the Embra clan. The Rite of Blood accepts both, transforms Trent into an Al'rashian, and gives them the Embra name. As the safe zone collapses, elemental spirits join Orion's orb and possibly Trent's vambraces, and the new family resumes its search for Francis's group.
Story so far - through chapter 38 (this book)
Francis's group abandons and burns its compromised fort, then endures weeks of attrition. Joel and Keller guide the retreat, but the exhausted survivors are driven into a fortress whose rules force them to withstand escalating assaults. Trent, Tersa, and Orion follow their trail. Orion limits his power because his presence appears to intensify the trial, while Trent recognizes that the fortress is a trap. During a major assault by orcs, infernal creatures, undead, and two hill trolls, Matthias becomes a pyromancer and uses Sacrificial Pyre. His death destroys one troll, the orc commander, and many orcs, but the defenders remain close to collapse. Orion binds the surviving troll in ice. Trent climbs it and uses allied spirits with Heart of the Inferno to destroy its head. He survives the explosion, then rejoins the fight until an orc breaks Sorrow and Strife and is about to kill him. Elsewhere, Cullen and Alistern reach the dread-knight Guardian and its horde. Alistern's Assassin class is replaced by Unyielding Slayer, a path suited to direct combat. Cullen kills the Guardian, clearing the trial and removing all surviving challengers before Trent can be struck.
Story so far - through chapter 39 (this book)
Cullen's defeat of the dread-knight Guardian clears the Land of the Undying Lord. Every surviving challenger is extracted, and Trent is pulled away at the instant an orc is about to kill him. Matthias remains the group's recorded death after sacrificing himself during the fortress siege. Trent preserves the broken Sorrow and Strife in the hope that they can be repaired. In the reward hall, Trent meets the former Al'rashian king who now keeps the trial. The keeper recognizes Trent Embra's violet eyes and Rite of Blood as signs connecting him to the Dusk Wraiths. He explains that Trent is neither a summon nor a trial beast, but an Al'rashian bond whose forced and failing connection to Kirstin has made him appear summon-like. He suspects the bond may originally have been intended for Lewis Al'dross, though this remains conjecture. Trent declines a larger weapon-focused reward and chooses Three Steps, Self-Clean, three attribute points, and two skill points. He leaves with a clearer understanding of what he is, but without certainty about his origin or intended partner. Orion and Tersa survive as his Embra family, and Orion plans to continue his Al'rashian sword training.
How does it end? (ending)
Cullen defeats the dread knight in chapter 38, clearing the Land of the Undying Lord and removing every surviving challenger from danger. The clear interrupts an orc's killing blow against Trent at the fortress. Matthias is the group's recorded loss, having used Sacrificial Pyre to kill a hill troll, the orc commander, and many attackers. Kirstin, Francis, Lyra, Dirk, Joel, Arisa, Keller, Bailey, Alistern, Cullen, Tersa, and Orion survive. Trent enters the reward hall with Sorrow and Strife broken but stored in hope of repair. The former Al'rashian king who keeps the trial recognizes him as a Dusk Wraith and explains that he is an Al'rashian bond, not a summon. The keeper suspects Trent may have been intended for Lewis Al'dross, but cannot prove it. Trent chooses Three Steps, Self-Clean, three attribute points, and two skill points as his reward. Orion has regained his spirit-summoner class, Tersa and Trent are members of his restored Embra family, and Orion plans to continue Trent's sword training. Trent's original identity, the proper recipient of his bond, the fading connection to Kirstin, and the fate of his damaged weapons remain open.
