The Legend of Randidly Ghosthound 14 recap
Every recap below is hidden until you open it. Each one is safe to read once you have finished the chapter it names.
In short (whole book)
Randidly helps contain a Fifth Cohort Nether invasion, reunites with Shal, and survives the Nether King's escape through a path toward the pinnacle. He then turns from factional service toward an independent power base, transferring inhabited worlds into Alpha Cosmos, preparing Xperia's first Calamity, and arranging to refine Claudette Bagon's image in exchange for hidden history and Nether knowledge. He defeats but does not kill a tattooed swordsman whose ancient seal exposes a larger Nexus mystery. At the Imperium Ball, Randidly, Claudette, and the elite squad publicly leave Commandant Wick's faction as sabotage and shaft tremors destabilize the Nexus. Wick retaliates by torturing and murdering Helen. Randidly contains his grief, tells her family, and postpones revenge while strengthening his images and planning to strip Nexus Aether controls from his worlds. Xperia's Calamity, Claudette's freedom, Rose's dying world, Shal's vulnerability, and the ancient shaft array remain unresolved.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Randidly Ghosthound became a powerful spear fighter and military commander while building Alpha Cosmos, a growing inner domain linked to the people and worlds under his protection. His struggle against the Nexus increasingly centered on escaping its surveillance and coercive systems rather than merely advancing within them. He developed an unusual command of both Aether and Nether, maintained several evolving images, and formed close bonds with allies including his lieutenant Helen and his soulbound engraving partner Nevaeh. Within the Fifth Cohort, Commandant Wick served as both patron and superior, placing Randidly inside a military hierarchy whose support came with political expectations. Randidly's former spear teacher Shal remained missing, along with a fate piece needed for Randidly's further development. Xperia and the Alpha Cosmos also remained dependent on Randidly's decisions as new threats approached. At the start of this volume, these personal debts, military obligations, and world-scale responsibilities converge during a major Nether offensive against the Fifth Cohort.
Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)
So far this book: A coordinated Nether assault strikes every Fifth Cohort Aether base while Commandant Wick holds the Nether King in the sky. Randidly leads the elite recruits against a newly landed pinion, destroys its massed beasts, and summons thousands of Baleful Court riders to support the fight. After killing a Nether Herald, he reorganizes the riders as autonomous Lancers whose internal challenges can make them stronger. He also spends a vast reserve of path points, evolving his spear skill, Agility, Vitality, and Control. The final evolution gives him a pinnacle-quality control stat that greatly sharpens his perception of Nether patterns. Lady Elia names the recruits the Volpus squad and divides them among reinforcement and scouting missions as Fifth Cohort losses mount. At a second pinion, Charlotte Wick and other recruits join the Lancers against another Herald. Randidly deliberately remains in the background under Raymond Ballast's identity, giving the squad a chance to win without his direct intervention while he strengthens his resistance to Aether tracking and control.
Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)
Randidly's path trial presents destructive extremes of Aether and Nether and directs him toward an unknown presence associated with the shaft. As the aerial defense fails, Wick fractures the battlefield into isolated spatial pockets. Randidly survives a Swak-family ambush, kills the attackers except for one coerced guide, and learns that Nether bridges connect the pockets. Raymond reports that his six-tailed brother has become unnaturally powerful and hostile. Randidly also discovers that Shal is alive in the Fifth Cohort and carries the next fate piece, but postpones pursuing him. He gives the Lancers genuine freedom to sever their bond, and one named Kerwin chooses independence while continuing to work for him. Randidly then takes Helen, Raymond, a ram-demon recruit, Kerwin, and the Swak guide deeper into the spatial maze. The guide warns that rival Pinnacle Seekers want the Nether King's body and that the strongest Nexus powers intervene against anyone nearing the pinnacle. The party chooses a dangerous Nether-held route and approaches a clash involving the frost-seeker leader Claudette Bagon.
Story so far - through chapter 33 (this book)
Randidly breaks the Engraving Guild array imprisoning Claudette Bagon and her Holy Frost Society, after which Claudette kills their captors and acknowledges a debt to him. Their groups form a temporary alliance and use the Frost Matriarch's map to move toward the maze's center. They find a wider battle among Military High Command, the Nexus Labor Council, Engraving Guild forces, and Pinnacle Seekers. Randidly locates Shal among the retreating Labor Council fighters and approaches him. Master and disciple reunite through a spear duel, with Randidly limiting himself rather than crushing Shal with his full range of abilities. Shal ultimately yields the Hierarchy of Burden, the fate piece Randidly needs, but leaves without explaining the condition of his image or his regret. The surrounding conflict remains volatile, and the deeper Nether formation is still active. Randidly's intervention also makes concealment increasingly difficult: Claudette and powerful Pinnacle Seekers now understand that he is more capable and more independent than his official military position suggests.
Story so far - through chapter 44 (this book)
The combined forces enter the protected inner battlefield, where four Nether spires conceal the Nether King's central structure. Randidly takes responsibility for an assault and uses a large Nether ritual to destroy one spire, even as the field strips power from ordinary images. When the Engraving Guild attacks, Shal is forced by Swak and lattice pressure to fight Randidly's group. Helen holds him off until Raymond strips away the borrowed images in Shal's armament. Raymond's six-tailed brother then appears, but Randidly identifies the controlling personality as a separate, immensely powerful image occupying the brother's body. The entity wounds Raymond and Helen before Randidly activates a trap that turns the image's own complexity against it. Its manifested body is destroyed, although Randidly senses it reforming elsewhere with Raymond's brother. Military High Command and the Pinnacle Seekers finish bringing down the remaining spires. The Nether King's structure is exposed, but Randidly, Helen, and Raymond are exhausted or injured, and the true scale of the confrontation is only beginning to emerge.
Story so far - through chapter 53 (this book)
The Nether King appears with two Nether Princes and invites the assembled Nexus factions to attack. Elite forces cannot overcome the defenders until a military Speculum cripples their key abilities, but the King retains control of a concealed ground ritual. Commandant Wick arrives with support from an overwhelming external power and begins crushing the isolated battlefield. Randidly recognizes that the Nether array below is the greater danger and persuades the Frost Matriarch to withdraw the Pinnacle Seekers into a shelter. When the spatial walls fail, the King uses the external assault as part of a ritual opening the Path to the Pinnacle and escapes with both Princes. Randidly prepares a defensive working based partly on Nevaeh's precise engraving style, intending to route the delayed force through his unusually durable body. The escape releases a massive shockwave toward the shelter, and the group's survival remains unresolved.
Story so far - through chapter 63 (this book)
Randidly awakens after several days physically remade by the Grim Chimera, with a reinforced frame and a large green tail that changes his balance. He retrains his movement and learns that the Hierarchy of Burden transfers the forces created by spatial wounds through a sequence of layers. Meanwhile, the official account falsely presents the Nether King's escape as a military victory. Randidly discovers that his Nether core has bound Xperia and Alpha Cosmos together, distorted their relative time, and disrupted the overlay system. A delayed Calamity still threatens Xperia. Claudette reveals that her father's protection is ending and asks Randidly to refine her image before established sculptors can control her. Before answering, Randidly develops a world-scale Nether envelope intended to shelter planets and deliberately guides the Grim Chimera away from pure destruction. He then survives a six-hour duel against a jackal-headed Pinnacle Seeker. The test proves his body's endurance, but also shows that his images remain below the strongest Nexus fighters. He agrees only to investigate Claudette's dangerous request.
Story so far - through chapter 76 (this book)
Randidly refuses recruitment into the Engraving Guild's Nether lattice and enters the shaft to train the Hierarchy of Burden. Constant electromagnetic stress improves his control, while collaboration with Nevaeh advances the protective Nether envelope. On Xperia, Tatiana prepares Karen for the delayed Calamity and defends Karen Academy from political leverage. Three students - Delilah, Mint, and Cassandra - discover an intruder inside an auction warehouse and survive an explosive attack. Investigators later determine that a person-sized dark-steel bomb is hidden in an image-killer suit and could devastate Karen. Randidly returns to the city after five years away, learns that he controls immense wealth there, and agrees to support its Guardian Visas program. At Karen Academy, Todd teaches him Scrawl, a disruptive engraving technique with wide potential. Randidly also studies his expanding images and Nether core, while Karen's automatons and moss spirits begin experimenting with the ideas he leaves behind. The academy auction approaches with the bomber still unidentified and the weapon still at large.
Story so far - through chapter 85 (this book)
News of Randidly's return spreads through Karen. He helps Todd escape a large student ambush without injuring anyone, turning the chase into an airborne demonstration of Scrawl and his own growing command of natural ripples. Todd reaches the under-auction, while Karen's residents see a renewed expression of the city's adventurous founding spirit. Garrett, a disgraced Order Dukies applicant, is revealed as the bomb's custodian. He intends to punish Karen because he blames Randidly for abandoning Xperia. Randidly intercepts him away from the crowd, contains the dark-steel weapon with Nether, and incapacitates him. Nevaeh warns that his protective mission is eroding his personal identity. Randidly accepts the risk of becoming the Ghosthound as a public force if that is required to oppose the Nexus, though his premonition that Todd could suffer in the Calamity makes that choice more immediate and painful. He decides to intervene in the Calamity plan, but its final structure remains unsettled.
Story so far - through chapter 91 (this book)
Karen's B.A. units prepare to test a sophisticated engraving that may give them individual human-like traits. At the academy auction, Todd's connection to Randidly becomes public, and a golden referendum gives students a way to compel action from the school board. Demio, a Nether gatekeeper rescued from the shaft, describes an ancient sealed array beneath the Nexus. Its builders sought to recreate life-producing radiation and reopen a route to a promised land, but the identity of the presence calling Randidly remains unknown. Randidly also refuses to grant a talented but self-serving skybike builder special entry into the Order Dukies. Helen challenges him for demanding purpose from others while avoiding his own desires, and she warns that his friends cannot keep pace with the scale of his self-transformation. When Todd asks whether the great enemy is frightening, Randidly admits his fear and emphasizes that no one is fighting alone. Even so, he decides the planned Calamity must proceed and returns to intensive Nether training rather than shielding Todd from every danger.
Story so far - through chapter 100 (this book)
After months in the shaft, Randidly gains a new Nether-analysis skill and sets out to secure a base for the coming Calamity. He negotiates with Claudette, who needs image refinement to resist her father, Don Bagon. In return for considering the work, Randidly requests protected history, information on rival Nether-core methods, and discreet purchases of planets. A meal debt brings them to Rose's isolated farm, where suppressive engravings block outside images and the Nexus overlay. Randidly discovers an old organic Nether array sustained by Rose's long commitment to the land. By repeatedly breaking and repairing it, he learns that moving Nether can reinforce its own circulation, a principle useful for transferring worlds. He also repairs Rose's ruined food warehouse with Nevaeh. On a nearby moon fragment, Randidly finds a preserved settlement of Rose's people, apparently discarded into space when the Nexus remade their world. Unable to save the unstable fragment permanently, he watches it break apart. The discovery deepens his determination to change the Nexus regardless of the resistance he faces.
Story so far - through chapter 109 (this book)
Randidly selects a barren asteroid, encloses it in a Nether array, and painfully draws it into Alpha Cosmos as the base for Xperia's Calamity. The Swak family's forbidden stockpile of a Soulbond-related substance is exposed, leaving the family politically vulnerable. At the Bagon estate, Don Bagon tries to buy Randidly away from Claudette and explains that he intends to secure her through a powerful marriage. Randidly agrees to conceal their meeting in exchange for non-interference. Claudette supplies historical accounts and arranges planet purchases, setting a deadline for her refinement. Randidly then proves he can transfer an inhabited world into Alpha Cosmos and continues acquiring the planets he promised to protect. Rose's people report that their planet is dying from Aether scarcity, but Rose angrily rejects their proposed compromise. Wick meanwhile turns Randidly's supposed courtship of Claudette into a public provocation against Don. With Helen's help at the farm, Randidly completes the promised transfers and prepares to obtain Shal's home planet directly when Swak-family conflict blocks the purchase.
Story so far - through chapter 115 (this book)
Randidly begins pulling Shal's home planet into Alpha Cosmos while Claudette watches. A tattooed swordsman with apparent Swak protection arrives, kills his own companion, threatens Claudette, and forces Randidly to accept a ten-minute duel immediately after the transfer. The planet resists at first, but Randidly connects to its history and completes the incorporation despite an attack that tears his array. Exhausted, he initially endures the swordsman's superior image until his body and Nether core recover. He then seizes the initiative and evolves the Grim Chimera into the Gray Creature, bringing his three major images into better balance. Randidly drives Nether into an Aether source within the swordsman's chest and touches an ancient memory bound to it. The contact damages a seal that has cursed the swordsman for a thousand years, but the memory overwhelms Randidly's mind. Claudette falsely announces the duel's time limit has expired, prompting the swordsman to withdraw rather than kill the incapacitated Randidly. The foe remains alive, and the memory exposes a deeper unresolved history behind the Nexus.
Story so far - through chapter 124 (this book)
Claudette brings the unconscious Randidly to Rose's farm. Rose identifies the ancient memory as a mandate draining Randidly's Aether and sacrifices Ethereum containing a treasured memory of his dead daughter Evelyn to save him. Randidly wakes two weeks later and understands the cost. Rose's farm deteriorates without the Ethereum, while refugees gather as the goblin planet fails. Randidly brings Claudette into Alpha Cosmos to train with Nevaeh and continues refining his three images. The tattooed swordsman is declared wanted but remains free, and Don Bagon now knows that Randidly can absorb planets and interfere with the ancient seal. Xperia's first Calamity begins as scattered attacks across the world. Zach leaves Karen Academy to help directly, joining Todd and the newly awakened automaton B.A. Zeta. Randidly restores Aether to Rose's planet through Nevaeh, trains Helen with the Hierarchy of Burden, and warns Tatiana to prepare Karen for worsening conditions. He fears that the decentralized Calamity may not have a clear ending, while Rose remains withdrawn and his world has not yet been moved to safety.
Story so far - through chapter 130 (this book)
Rose rejects Randidly's offer to save his world, blaming its population for exploiting Evelyn until her death. Randidly withdraws the Aether support despite believing many inhabitants are innocent, while Nevaeh considers an evacuation route. At the Imperium Ball, Randidly and Claudette register as an independent faction rather than wearing the colors of Wick's established bloc. Lady Elia teaches them the Grand Dance, a demanding sequence of movement and image pulses. A rival commandant turns one challenge into a fatal contest, but Randidly survives the patterns and defeats the opposing dancer. Raymond then leads the entire elite squad in publicly abandoning Wick's faction to follow Randidly. The political break becomes unmistakable. Before the event can settle, a fugitive destroys part of the Engraving Guild's overlay archive, reducing the faction's surveillance reach. A scarred woman intercepts him and seeks information about the ancient seal Randidly damaged. Tremors from below the shaft wreck the ballroom, ending the dance and forcing an evacuation into a much wider Nexus crisis.
Story so far - through chapter 135 (this book)
During the ball's evacuation, Randidly reunites with Vuala and their romantic bond becomes explicit. He sends the elite squad back to the Fifth Cohort while he and Nevaeh exploit the damaged overlay system to begin removing Nexus observation constructs from Alpha Cosmos. Claudette obtains two accepted Nether-core methods and prepares for her refinement. Then Raymond summons Randidly to the rally station, where he finds Helen murdered and a message from Commandant Wick threatening equal retaliation against anyone who follows him. Helen had refused Wick's demand that she become his personal servant and suppressed her bond so Randidly would not sense her torture. Randidly takes her shattered fate weapon and initially loses control of his images, but he restrains himself rather than attacking immediately. Wick admits the killing was meant to demonstrate Randidly's insignificance and enforce obedience after the squad's defection. Randidly answers only that he will remember. Claudette arrives with the promised Nether-core records, and Randidly chooses to continue preparing her refinement while fixing Wick as a deliberate future target.
Story so far - through chapter 141 (this book)
Randidly channels grief over Helen into punishing image work, driving Yggdrasil to a new Mythic I-Core that combines destruction with renewed growth. He asks Nevaeh to arrange Helen's funeral and accepts that grief cannot be solved through training alone. Xperia's Calamity continues to worsen: cities go silent, defenders plan an expedition toward its source, and Zach, Todd, and B.A. Zeta guide refugees through werewolf attacks. Randidly trains a mourning ram-demon subordinate with the Hierarchy of Burden, then recognizes that both of them need space to grieve. Elsewhere, Shal learns that his home planet has vanished and receives a dangerous offer of a replacement image from his six-tailed commander. Nevaeh painfully removes several Nexus Aether constructs from Randidly, but the process is not ready for broad use. Randidly begins designing a scalable ritual to remove those controls from Xperia and Alpha Cosmos. Finally, he visits Helen's mother Islinda on Tellus, confirms that Helen died protecting him, and promises that he will remember her killer. Wick remains alive, and Randidly chooses preparation over immediate revenge.
How does it end? (ending)
Commandant Wick remains alive and powerful after admitting that he killed Helen to force Randidly and the defecting elite squad back into obedience. Randidly takes Helen's broken fate weapon, tells her mother Islinda that Helen died protecting him, and promises that the killer will be remembered. A later spar with Bear Tarn gives his grief a temporary outlet, but not a resolution. Nevaeh supports him and begins testing the removal of unwanted Nexus Aether constructs, while Randidly designs a ritual that could eventually cleanse Xperia and Alpha Cosmos at scale. Claudette trains inside Alpha Cosmos and supplies Nether-core methods, but her refinement, Don Bagon's control, and the tattooed swordsman's threat remain open. Shal has lost contact with his home planet and is vulnerable to a dangerous offer. Rose refuses rescue for his failing world despite the danger to its people. On Xperia, the decentralized Calamity continues to spread as Zach, Todd, and B.A. Zeta protect refugees. Randidly ends the volume expanding his independent power, preparing to evolve his Nether core, and choosing deliberate preparation over immediate vengeance.
