In short (whole book)
Randidly leads a Zone 32 party through a sealed raid dungeon, saves Alana from a destructive level-50 Reckoning, exposes the Dintan bargain, and cripples the experimenter manipulating the dungeon. The raid kills its Regalia-powered final enemy, but Chrysanthemum is catastrophically aged and Simon claims the Regalias as the Eternal Dreamer. After breaking with Lyra and learning that many hostile incarnations may exist, Randidly enters Zone 1 in disguise. He reconciles with his estranged father Ezekiel, builds a hidden refuge with Tatiana, develops powerful combat drones, and uncovers Unity Church captivity and organ-harvesting sites. He becomes Earth's first Great Path holder and, with Lucretia, destroys the Aether core in Father Foster's god-remnant facility. Father Foster appears to die, but the Church and creature network remain active. Randidly prepares further investigation as Hank reaches his comatose brother Alan under the shadow of Fear.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: The System transformed Earth into zones governed by levels, classes, skills, and Aether. Randidly Ghosthound became an exceptionally strong, independent protector of Zone 32, developed a living inner world, and remained connected to Lucretia and a bonded bone-worm companion. He established a settlement, formed alliances with fighters and leaders including Alana, Ace, Annie, Rose, and Sydney, and learned that greater System trials were approaching.
Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)
Randidly receives a powerful non-Aether spear and assembles the final members of his raid expedition. In East End, he reunites uneasily with his childhood friend Sydney and defeats her challenge for command. Sydney declines to enter the dungeon but appoints her guard leader Drake as East End's representative. The ten-person party enters with Thea's bear Chrysanthemum, repairs a dangerous tear in the entrance, and learns that retreat is impossible. After defeating large packs of skinless cats, the group discovers its objective: take the Key of Death to a fallen altar and open the Door of Life. Three unnatural towers and an apparently peaceful elf-like village offer the first leads. The villagers accept the party for one night, but a falling stone triggers monster attacks and draws most local fighters away, leaving Randidly's group to defend the settlement.
Story so far - through chapter 28 (this book)
The raid party survives the village assault, but missing bodies, vanished loot, and the blind local priestess's compulsive influence deepen suspicion. Randidly finds murdered children whose Aether she consumed, yet keeps her alive long enough to finish a protection quest and learn more. A System judgment pursues the retreating party, which destroys it through coordinated attacks. When the quest reward pushes Alana to level 50, her class Reckoning turns lethal after she rejects an imposed shape. Randidly and Lucretia bind her collapsing class together with Living Aether and absorbed images. Alana survives as the Valkyrie of the Red Dust. Lucretia explains that level-50 fates condense personal images and may qualify people for the coming Calamity. The priestess finally admits that her people are classless monsters who steal life to accelerate their growth.
Story so far - through chapter 42 (this book)
The Dintan describe how exile, monster pressure, and a golden-haired outsider's bargain drove their people toward hereditary debt and life consumption. The party turns north toward an airborne death-cultist settlement and destroys its defenders, only to learn that the accessible Key of Death would kill every inhabitant of the dungeon. Randidly exposes the blind Dintan ritualist as the former Wild Rider and breaks her concealed influence over Ptolemy. Her account reveals that Gemma, a surviving body double, became the ancient leader tied to the bargain. Meanwhile, Randidly's inner world comes under attack through a conduit. The Monster King organizes its defense while Randidly gives selected inhabitants dangerous powers to resist the invasion. The raid party approaches the hidden Dintan city without accepting a solution that requires mass death.
Story so far - through chapter 56 (this book)
Randidly enters the hidden city and is separated from much of the raid party as the dungeon's factions converge. Gemma represents the city's hidden ruler and maintains the ancient bargain, while her metallic dog joins the defense. The party's attempt to navigate the city becomes open conflict involving Dintan forces, death cultists, and summoned monsters. Within Randidly's soul world, the Monster King accepts a power that will destroy his body and leads a counterattack through the enemy conduit. Randidly reaches the presence behind the dungeon, which wears an aged version of Lyra's face. The being claims it belongs to a wider calamity structure and says it deliberately shaped parts of Randidly's early development, but its account remains unverified. It seizes control of a powerful warrior and presses Randidly while Lucretia prepares a separate countermeasure.
Story so far - through chapter 68 (this book)
The soul-world counterattack ignites a substance that poisons the experimenter's accessible presence, breaking its control long enough for Randidly to incapacitate its warrior. The Monster King dies after carrying the attack through the conduit, but his sacrifice ruins the enemy forces' coordination. A final dungeon creature emerges from the city, sustained by both Regalias and armed with beams that rapidly age whatever they strike. Randidly rejoins the raid, and the party destroys the creature through coordinated attacks from Annie, Thea, Alana, Ace, and the others. Chrysanthemum shields Randidly from an aging beam and is left terminally decayed. The System confirms the raid victory, expands Zone 32, and announces that it will join the new Earth in six months. Simon claims the recovered Regalias and becomes the Eternal Dreamer. Randidly's bonded companion completes a smaller humanoid, bone-winged transformation.
Story so far - through chapter 79 (this book)
Randidly learns from recovered memories that the defeated enemy was one of thousands of incarnations running experiments and recruiting human collaborators. His inner world develops into a realm organized around the Spectral Tree's seven territories, while Zone 32 begins rescuing people from newly opened territory. Lyra, revealed as the settlement's village spirit, restores Chrysanthemum's movement by transferring strength through his bond with Thea. The price makes Thea a champion's Nemesis. Lyra admits cooperating with the experimenter because she believes it offers humanity a route to survival. Randidly rejects that strategy and leaves the settlement rather than remain under her influence. Thea disappears, beyond Simon's champion awareness. Randidly forms a small border expedition to explore, improve his strength, and experiment with creating classes outside the System. A report of Earth's unusual Aether also exposes the planet to broader outside scrutiny.
Story so far - through chapter 89 (this book)
In Zone 1, gunslinger sheriff Hank Howard intervenes for a probationary youth before his brother Alan, the UHF president, summons him. Zone 1 is governed through citizenship tiers and the predictions of Ghost, an artificial intelligence that classifies people, monsters, and cities. Hank distrusts that order but accepts command of Expedition 3, which will map routes and contact newly connected zones. His assigned personnel include Ezekiel, a dangerous specialist held in containment. Hank defeats a challenge from an armored rival, and the expedition gains additional members selected by Ghost and the Temple on the Hill. Although the group is politically divided, Hank establishes practical command. The expedition departs as Zone 1 prepares to connect with the wider world, while Ghost watches Hank and Ezekiel for risks beyond the stated mission.
Story so far - through chapter 103 (this book)
Hank's expedition crosses dangerous territory and makes contact with Zone 32. Randidly returns from border exploration and confronts Ezekiel, discovering that the detained specialist is his estranged father. Their violent reunion gives way to a limited reconciliation, but Ezekiel's class, Beelzebub the Taker, steadily removes his stats unless he kills. The danger remains unresolved even after he explains his past. Randidly then covertly enters Zone 1 to trace another incarnation of the dungeon experimenter. Using the steelworker identity Baloo Erickson, he takes industrial work, studies local forging, and begins constructing an underground base. He conceals his true abilities from Zone 1's surveillance while scanning for the enemy signature and learning how the zone's government, military, and industry operate.
Story so far - through chapter 114 (this book)
Randidly expands his hidden Zone 1 base while working as a steelworker and investigating the Unity Church, whose leader Father Foster controls a powerful enclave. At a workers' gathering he meets Tatiana, an armed organizer posing as a fortune reader. They decide to remain in contact after helping contain the gathering's violence. Elsewhere, Hank and Ezekiel reach Zone 32 and test themselves against its fighters. A local teenager defeats Ezekiel without killing him. Hank survives a breakthrough duel, creates several image-based skills, and receives emergency repair from a child soul architect after severe Aether sickness. Randidly continues searching for the creature's dispersed signature while concealing his identity from Zone 1's supervising powers.
Story so far - through chapter 126 (this book)
Randidly abandons the slow repair of his damaged physical skill and clears space to create a replacement. He enlarges his underground forest base with room for housing and a forge while continuing steel work and unsuccessful searches for the creature's scattered signature. Tatiana becomes a tentative friend after he covertly prevents violence around a Unity Church recruit. Randidly's companion also appears publicly under his identity and forms a political connection with a senator. When Zone 1 forces steelworkers into an evacuation, Randidly joins rather than leave civilians unaided. The newly opened area contains far more residents than officials predicted, and monster levels climb rapidly. The military orders an early withdrawal, but Randidly and other volunteers refuse to abandon thousands still in danger. Hank's time in Zone 32 meanwhile confirms the strength of its fighters and soul specialists.
Story so far - through chapter 140 (this book)
Evidence from a hidden facility links the Unity Church to captives and organ removal. Randidly brings survivors to the farming compound above his underground forest base and asks his allies to locate similar sites. He begins experimenting with observation, transport, and tunneling drones, then concludes that stronger designs will require an original runic language. His first machines remain imperfect, but the work offers a route to information and improved local conditions. Randidly also recognizes a Unity Church speaker as his maternal grandfather, Shal, creating a direct personal connection to the Church's leadership. Elsewhere, an attack on a mine is attributed to a cross-zone Nemesis threat. Randidly continues preparing to travel to Shal's world once Earth is secure enough, leaving limited time to address the threats developing in Zone 1.
Story so far - through chapter 150 (this book)
Randidly discovers that his transformed bone-winged companion has been impersonating him in public, building the Orchard refuge under his identity, and maintaining a false engagement with Tia. Their bond allows her to imitate him and teleport him, but her independent decisions create new complications. Randidly nonetheless uses the refuge and his own underground community to shelter more people. He develops a new physical skill and advances his understanding of Aether, fate, and System paths. When a contaminated boy reaches the community, Randidly detects dense creature-associated Aether and secures him for examination. The Unity Church cannot search the compound because Randidly's drone work has earned protective citizenship status. His connection to Shal and the Church is now direct, while the companion continues presenting the engagement to Tia as genuine.
Story so far - through chapter 159 (this book)
Randidly completes a unique path and becomes Earth's first Great Path holder, gaining Wrathful Duel Mage and Weaver with the Threads of Fate. He strengthens Zone 1's defenses with heat-converting shields and armed pterodactyl drones, then helps clear raid bosses from a southwestern lake. Human attackers intervene, suggesting organized protection of the danger zone. His companion tells Tia that the public Randidly is an impostor and later reveals her bone-winged form while stopping an assassination attempt. Tatiana formally joins Randidly's organization and becomes his partner, while he commits to training and equipping the refuge. Alana leads a Zone 1 force pursuing the alleged Undying Hero and defeats Ace at another refuge. Randidly shifts toward scalable drone forces as ambient Aether thickens and multiple danger zones threaten wider outbreaks.
Story so far - through chapter 165 (this book)
The drone program becomes a major Zone 1 political issue after public claims that mass-produced machines could rival elite soldiers. Attackers target Randidly and Tatiana after a charity event, but he defeats them before a leading Zone 1 fighter can identify him. Tatiana sees through two of his disguises and realizes how much he has concealed, though his canonical identity remains unconfirmed to her. Randidly rejects a fate-linked legendary skill after the Weaver of Fate warns that refusal will kill him, destroying the coercive connection at serious cost. He then attacks a newly discovered organ-harvesting base with two allies. The facility is prepared for them with roughly 150 exosuit soldiers. A mechanical insect speaking with the creature's voice draws Randidly into a sealed chamber containing a glowing cylinder and a faint but unmistakable trace of hostile Aether.
Story so far - through chapter 167 (this book)
The insect identifies itself as another incarnation of the experimenter and tries to provoke Randidly into destroying the cylinder. Father Foster arrives in an exosuit and explains that the chamber holds the body of a slain god whose power supports her facilities. She admits directing the wider operation, offers Randidly power and immortality, and attacks when he refuses. Randidly defeats her enhanced exosuit with a lava golem, and the machinery sustaining her fails. Her final strike damages the cylinder and releases its imprisoned Aether. Lucretia uses a weapon prepared over months to sever the core connection before the chamber explodes. Father Foster appears to die but describes herself as replaceable, leaving the fate of her organization and the relevant creature incarnation uncertain.
Story so far - through chapter 170 (this book)
The destroyed core spreads difficult-to-control Aether across Zone 1, likely accelerating growth while leaving the Unity Church operational. Randidly and Lucretia disagree over whether the ruined remnant was truly the creature or a decoy. Randidly decides to investigate Church refugee camps through his drone-maker identity before leaving for Shal's world. Ghost's tests show that Randidly's three drone designs can defeat raid bosses and support broad patrol coverage. Despite this success, Ghost contacts Father Foster and accepts her secret proposal to target the drone-maker behind the machines. Randidly remains with Tatiana and their expanding concealed community, while Thea, Chrysanthemum, Lyra, Ezekiel's lethal class, and the creature network remain unresolved. In the final chapter, Hank reaches the hospital where Alan lies unconscious with a heart that will not beat. Hank's dream warns that the named figure Fear is approaching and that Alan's death could trigger catastrophe.
How does it end? (ending)
Randidly and Lucretia sever the Aether core inside Father Foster's god-remnant facility, killing the embodied Father Foster and spreading difficult-to-control Aether across Zone 1. The Unity Church survives, and Ghost secretly accepts Father Foster's proposal to target Randidly's drone-maker identity. Randidly stays with Tatiana and their concealed refuge, intending to investigate the Church before traveling to Shal's world. His companion continues operating through his public identity, while Simon holds the Regalias as the Eternal Dreamer. Thea remains missing as a Nemesis, Chrysanthemum's recovery is uncertain, and Lyra is estranged from Randidly. Ezekiel remains burdened by a class that requires killings. At the hospital, Hank finds his brother Alan unconscious with a heart that will not beat, while Hank's dream warns that Fear is approaching.
