In short (whole book)
Randidly challenges the settlement to confront its dependence on him, then interrupts his preparations to contain a frog-world invasion and rescue Kirstie from raiders. Back home, he and Helen fight the settlement through an escalating public ladder that ends in a catastrophic draw and leaves both the community and Randidly changed. He protects Erickson Steel from political pressure, teaches image-based forging, and enters a time-dilated dungeon to prepare for his heretic judgment. Eleven months of training yield stronger images and large-scale living engravings, but cost him his artificial arm and involve the destruction of an organized monster people. In the Alpha Cosmos, he refuses to dictate a looming war and spares the anchor-linked Prince Lazarus. Beneath the dungeon plateau, a dying fourth-cohort warrior reveals that the system recruits worlds for a war against oblivion, gives Randidly a Nether bomb and empowered glove, and indicates that his judgment will demand front-line survival. Randidly leaves with a dangerous Nether skill, a damaged class, and no settled answer to the wider conflict.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Randidly Ghosthound became one of Earth's leading fighters while resisting the system's attempts to define and control his growth. His power increasingly depends on images, especially Yggdrasil, and on the Alpha Cosmos within his soul. He leads an order, owns Erickson Steel, and carries responsibility for allies on Earth and lives inside his soul world. His disputes with the system have marked him as a heretic and placed a judgment in his future. Helen, an off-world spear fighter, seeks to stand beside him as his knight. Nevaeh remains bound to him and operates independently in defense of Earth. Lyra possesses knowledge of system architecture but has repeatedly proven difficult to trust. Earth is still connecting zones and approaching further calamities, while hostile forces, political rivalries, and portals to other worlds keep its position unstable. Randidly begins this volume convinced that humanity's present security is misleading and that dependence on a few exceptional fighters will not survive what comes next.
Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)
Randidly argues that the settlement's collective image is brittle and accepts a nine-stage challenge against its organized forces. He intends the contest to expose complacency before future calamities arrive. Helen asks to fight beside him, but Earth's restrictions suppress her strength, so she begins severe dungeon training instead. Randidly also needs a functional left arm. A sprigget engineer supplies a mechanical design, a settlement smith helps forge the pieces from an improved blood-steel alloy, and Randidly engraves the arm with a powerful imbalance-exploiting strike. He rejects darksteel armor because it suppresses the image-based growth he considers essential. Meanwhile, the village spirit shows him a concealed floating-island ark intended to evacuate Earth if survival becomes impossible. Several summoned riders fail to return, creating another urgent problem. With the arm completed and tested against a high-level bear, Randidly heads southeast to recover them before the public challenge begins.
Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)
Randidly reaches the harbor settlement of Scant and learns that Nevaeh has been using his riders in a hidden campaign across the sea. On the journey, Lyra asks him for a class and warns that a stronger power has interfered with his coming judgment. The feared pirate called the Pale Killer proves to be Declan, a former ally broken by Tara's death and the failed attempts to revive her. Declan leads Randidly through a portal into a frog-person world. There, Nevaeh poses as a Great Demon King and destroys local rulers to conceal Earth's weakness from a much stronger invasion force. The undying skeleton Roy has encouraged distant Toad Lords to attack Earth, so Randidly adopts the role of Demon Prince and pursues him south with Shual, a frog-person academy graduate who volunteered as guide. Along the way, Randidly spares an intelligent level-70 boar whose maroon skeletal arm appears to act against it. Roy, the portal threat, and the origin of the frog world's imposed ether supply remain unresolved.
Story so far - through chapter 35 (this book)
Randidly enters a deep frog city while following Roy's trail. Its Toad Lord demonstrates control over subordinates' ether, confirms that a skeletal emissary promoted an invasion of Earth, and tries to poison Randidly. Randidly kills him but still cannot identify the source of the world's feed system. At the same time, Thea's group launches a coordinated raid on the settlement. Regina, Mrs. Hamilton, Alana, and other defenders drive back attackers that include the flaming skeletal bear Chrysanthemum and a winged portal-maker. Randidly catches Roy and discovers Drake beside him, blinded and driven indiscriminately violent by a maroon-crystal Fate. A portal lets the raiders retrieve them. Thea reveals that an unknown patron demanded someone connected to Randidly in exchange for settling Chrysanthemum's revival debt, and her group abducts Kirstie. Randidly forces his way through their portal, transfers Kirstie to safety, and overwhelms several attackers. Thea, Drake, and surviving allies escape after Chrysanthemum absorbs heavy damage and the portal array is destroyed. Kirstie is rescued, but Randidly cannot pursue immediately.
Story so far - through chapter 47 (this book)
Back in the Alpha Cosmos, Randidly and Lucretia study a system construct that reduces image power to simpler statistical output. The discovery strengthens his belief that images can exceed the system's intended limits. Helen completes a dream trial, reaches level 50 with a Fate, and earns a place beside him in the settlement challenge. Randidly experiments with merging his Ash and Spear Phantom styles, develops a mana-engraving image within Yggdrasil, and tests four powerful items made by Sam. The items carry histories Sam did not consciously invent, raising concern that earlier blessings have connected Randidly to an unknown influence. Mist also clears inside the Alpha Cosmos, revealing a populated continent whose history matches those item legends. Randidly orders cautious contact through the Monster Prince. With little time left, he decides to form the Ashen Phantom under the pressure of live combat. The public challenge begins with Randidly and Helen facing the settlement's lower-ranked squads before a divided crowd.
Story so far - through chapter 59 (this book)
Randidly's Ashen Phantom overwhelms the first two hundred fighters, while Helen defeats the next rung through her blood-sea image. Together and separately, they continue through veteran squads. The Cortez siblings briefly test Randidly through coordinated defense and stamina drain, but he defeats them and directs them toward future training. The contest changes when military commander Stan authorizes Eli Iron to strike Randidly between rounds. The ambush fails with catastrophic injuries to Eli, and Randidly enters the next battle knowing the settlement has tried to manipulate him. He releases Yggdrasil and nearly turns its judgment on Stan. His accumulated images demand a death he is unwilling to deliver, creating a crisis that threatens their stability. Contact with the Monster Prince's independent pursuit of peace gives Randidly another answer: the settlement must carry responsibility for its own path. He rewrites Yggdrasil's judgment, evolves a powerful root skill, and forces the elite squad toward surrender without executing Stan.
Story so far - through chapter 66 (this book)
Mrs. Hamilton interrogates Stan and confirms that the surprise attack was designed to cloud Randidly's judgment and exploit his instinct to protect the settlement. Randidly concludes that shielding the community from consequences will only preserve its weakness. Clarissa then challenges him with increasingly destructive weather magic, but Yggdrasil eventually collapses her wind entity. Two elite squads enter next. Their leaders nearly sever Randidly's mechanical arm and expose the poor transition between his separate spear styles. Under their pressure, Randidly forcibly merges the styles into the mythic Descent of the Grim Chimera. The system recognizes him as Earth's first mythic-rarity individual, awards the First Key to the Nexus, and opens a possible route for territory or the world to ascend with additional keys. The violent Chimera image transforms his combat and lets him defeat both elite leaders. The new finishing technique is decisive, but its effects and bodily cost remain unknown as the settlement prepares its combined final force.
Story so far - through chapter 79 (this book)
Randidly learns that his mythic finishing move draws on unrealized paths through time and can inflict lasting damage when the chosen variation is too distant. The settlement gathers fifty-two fighters for a decisive combined battle, planning to separate Helen, suppress Randidly's plants, and use their Fates to resist his images. Randidly answers with Yggdrasil, the Grim Chimera, roots, and summoned riders. Alana drives Helen away while Miranda, Sam, Clarissa, Donnie, and the rest coordinate frost, barriers, curses, summons, and close attacks against Randidly. Declan emerges from concealment to wound him but is defeated. The defenders suffer mounting injuries as Randidly breaks their formations and interrupts Clarissa's major wind ritual. Their last tactic requires sacrifices: Donnie returns damage dealt to Paolo, Sam ruins his frost hammer, and Rayna briefly commands Randidly to remain still. Those moments let Beryl complete Isolate. Randidly loses every ordinary sense, yet remains physically unharmed and able to reach his inner world. Through the Grim Chimera, he detects Alana approaching.
Story so far - through chapter 82 (this book)
While Randidly remains trapped in sensory isolation, Helen fights Dozer alone. Her declaration that she is Randidly's knight briefly loosens Earth's restrictions, allowing her to defeat Dozer despite a broken femur. Alana sends the remaining leaders away and confronts Randidly with an emerging Valkyrie image sustained partly by the settlement's gathered belief. Randidly manifests the Grim Chimera directly through his body, and their exchanges destroy the arena. The final collision opens a much larger collapse that consumes the quarry, lightly damages the production district, and leaves a dangerous sinkhole under the settlement. Both Alana and Randidly survive. Alana begins practicing a smaller orange image that belongs more fully to her, while Randidly recovers in isolation and Helen serves as his contact with the leadership. The settlement awards Randidly the completed rung, but the arena's destruction postpones the last stage indefinitely. Publicly, the challenge ends as an indefinite draw.
Story so far - through chapter 92 (this book)
A delegation from Zone 11 asks the settlement for help against weekly waves of level-70 monsters. In the frog world, Roy and Drake remain prisoners of a powerful ruler, with Drake tortured and Roy threatened for refusing to yield. Randidly withdraws after the challenge, stabilizes the conflict between his images, and turns to Erickson Steel as his heretic judgment approaches. He gains major path rewards, gives the settlement energy-rich fruits, and postpones Lyra's request for a class because it could give her dangerous influence. At Erickson Steel, Tatiana explains that hostile interests are using taxes, debt, and proposed regulation to seize control. Randidly consolidates operations, asks Naffer to establish an Order Dukies base, and begins improving rail cars and materials. Vi's careful judgment earns Tatiana's trust. Randidly then completes Perfect Soulbond with Nevaeh. His awareness reaches an immense engraved crystal barrier, where a hostile presence attacks through his soul space and partially shatters his class before following a karmic connection toward an unidentified creature. His soul skill begins repairs, but the threat is unidentified.
Story so far - through chapter 104 (this book)
Nevaeh uses their new doppelganger connection to examine Randidly and finds traces of the hostile being's rigid ether. Randidly clears them through sustained ether output and restores balance between Yggdrasil and the Grim Chimera, reducing the pain from his damaged class. He publicly teaches Erickson Steel's smelters to forge through images. Their first attempts already surpass the company's previous alloys, and his own samples exceed them by a wide margin. Inspired by the demonstration, Vi resigns to seek an independent path with Tatiana's support. Senator Heathridge and Evan Crane continue attacks on the company through staged government demands and a hired infiltrator, but Helen kills the saboteur before he can act. Alana prepares a settlement force to aid Zone 11 while struggling to form an image without the conditions of her duel. Randidly confirms that dungeon time pauses his judgment timer, harvests hundreds of stone golems, and gains new control and willpower insights. He heads west to find a higher-level dungeon suitable for extended preparation.
Story so far - through chapter 115 (this book)
Political pressure on Erickson Steel escalates when Helen kills another suspected agent, admits it, and incapacitates officers who attempt to detain her. Randidly enters a level-67 time-dilated dungeon where one outside month could contain years. He builds a forge and training base beside a timeless monolith and discovers arrows pointing toward a forbidden plateau. Closer examination shows that his class only appears repaired: later levels no longer strengthen its underlying image, so he commits to a year of refinement. His ether awakens a community of clockwork-building mollusks and encourages his summoned riders to form competing factions led by Kingsley and Trap. Outside, Vi accepts an Orchard lottery certificate and seeks a place in the Order Dukies. Naffer asks candidates to demonstrate the ideals behind their desired futures. Vi reaches the final duel against Roland, an experienced light user with a condensed Fate. Her prepared rituals break his defenses, but he escalates to lethal attacks. With her charms exhausted and an ion bolt closing, she must rely on her bare hands and pen.
Story so far - through chapter 123 (this book)
Vi disperses Roland's ion bolt with an improvised hand technique but loses the duel and is badly injured. Naffer stops further violence and accepts responsibility. Randidly refuses to impose peace on the Alpha Cosmos when Lucretia reports that a neighboring nation is militarizing, recognizing its inhabitants as separate lives despite their bond to him. Heathridge's legal campaign against Erickson Steel fails, though he misreads the company's activity as a covert political coalition. In the dungeon, Randidly's riders add a third legion, then face an organized monster resistance led by a bird-monster war priestess. She refuses surrender or flight, and the three legions eradicate her people. Randidly later counts 9,106 dead and admits that his haste and suspicion made the outcome a mistake. Vi wakes with a damaged left hand bearing the persistent Reject effect and joins the Order Dukies training camp at Erickson Steel. After eight dungeon months, Randidly succeeds in creating a huge levelable engraving through repeated use of his mythic time-variation skill. The five-day experiment destroys his base dome and artificial left arm, but establishes that large scale can make image distribution manageable.
Story so far - through chapter 129 (this book)
The mollusk settlement develops internal conflict over automatons, so Randidly offers its people a new purpose outside the dungeon. He asks Wendy to design a moving city and later entrusts her with the mollusks and gathered resources. In the Alpha Cosmos, Azrael explains that she has found growth beyond obsessive training. Her host, Lazar Stone, is exposed as Prince Lazarus and as one of the people anchoring the Alpha Cosmos. Lazarus claims that the connection could let him seize the world, then attacks. Randidly defeats him but spares his life, leaving Azrael to treat him while the threat remains open. After eleven months of training, Randidly follows the ancient arrows onto the forbidden plateau. His three rider legions engage the gathered monster refugees while he enters a vast crater alone. A trail of engraved beacons leads past a damaged mythic chisel-glove, immense bone piles, and a lake of liquefied ether. At the bottom, Randidly finds a decaying crystal coffin whose surviving instructions tell him to break it. Concluding that the entire path was deliberately prepared, he uses the glove to strike the coffin.
Story so far - through chapter 131 (this book)
The coffin releases a red-haired monkey warrior dying from a Nether wound. His enduring artwork created the dungeon's timeless image, and he learns that his former fourth-cohort world has been reduced to a system dungeon. He explains that his world survived three calamities, then received a fourth requiring a century of front-line service in the Great War. Nether-distorted time made his years count as only days, causing failure and leaving his world abandoned. He believes the system recruits worlds for a war against oblivion, converts unstable level-50 Fates into weapons, and discards worlds that cannot meet its demands. The warrior gives Randidly a contained Nether bomb and returns the chisel-glove empowered by his remaining timelessness. He says Randidly's heretic judgment will probably require proving his value through a limited term on those same front lines, though the duration is unknown. When Randidly activates Touch from Beyond, he discovers its mythic form, Nether's Caress, which manifests Nether at the cost of corruption and severe bodily harm. Randidly promises not to refuse a future opportunity to strike the system. He leaves the encounter stronger in knowledge and dangerous tools, but without a left arm, a repaired class, or certainty about the wider war.
How does it end? (ending)
After eleven dungeon months, Randidly can embody his images more reliably and has developed practical large-scale engraving, but his artificial left arm is destroyed and his class remains structurally damaged. Wendy receives the moving-city project, the rescued mollusks, and dungeon resources. Randidly spares Prince Lazarus after defeating him, leaving Azrael to treat the anchor-linked prince while the Alpha Cosmos approaches a possible war without Randidly's direct intervention. On Earth, Helen remains his active ally, Naffer is building an Order Dukies training program at Erickson Steel, and Vi joins it with a painful, persistent Reject effect in her left hand. Nevaeh still contains the frog-world threat through fear, while Roy and Drake remain captive. Beneath the dungeon plateau, a terminally Nether-corrupted warrior gives Randidly a Nether bomb and an empowered chisel-glove. He explains that the system uses worlds as recruits in a war against oblivion and that Randidly's heretic judgment will probably require surviving limited front-line service. Randidly's Touch from Beyond reveals its mythic form as Nether's Caress, a power that risks corruption and severe injury. He promises not to refuse a future chance to strike the system, though the warrior's account and the exact terms of the judgment remain unresolved.
