A report eventually places Ichabod alive elsewhere as a lawyer, politician, and judge, though Sleepy Hollow's storytellers continue to treat his disappearance as supernatural.

Even so, the older women of Sleepy Hollow prefer the supernatural explanation, and the abandoned schoolhouse becomes another haunted place in local tradition.
