The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle recap

In the secluded Hudson Valley community of Sleepy Hollow, Connecticut schoolmaster Ichabod Crane courts Katrina Van Tassel, the only child of a wealthy farmer, and becomes the rival of the strong local prankster Brom Bones. Ichabod is deeply susceptible to ghost stories, especially the legend of a headless Hessian who rides near the churchyard. After a harvest gathering at the Van Tassel farm, Ichabod leaves disappointed and rides home alone through the haunted valley. A huge mounted figure carrying its head before it pursues him and throws the object at the church bridge. Ichabod disappears. Searchers find his borrowed horse, a damaged saddle, and a shattered pumpkin, but no body. Brom soon marries Katrina and reacts knowingly when the pumpkin is mentioned, suggesting that he frightened Ichabod away in disguise. A later visitor reports that Ichabod survived and established a legal and political career elsewhere, though the neighborhood's believers continue to credit the Headless Horseman.

Ichabod Crane's unexplained flight from Sleepy Hollow leaves both a supernatural legend and evidence of a prank by his rival Brom Bones. The second tale follows Rip Van Winkle, a kindly but idle villager who escapes domestic scolding by wandering into the Catskills with his dog, Wolf. There he helps a silent stranger carry a keg to an oddly dressed company playing ninepins. Rip drinks their liquor and falls asleep. He wakes with a long beard, a rusted gun, and no sign of Wolf. Returning home, he finds his village enlarged and politically charged, with unfamiliar residents discussing elections beneath a sign of George Washington rather than King George III. Rip gradually learns that twenty years and the American Revolution have passed. His wife is dead, old friends are gone or transformed, and a young man resembling him is his grown son. His daughter Judith recognizes him and gives him a home. The elder Peter Vanderdonk connects Rip's story to a tradition that Hendrick Hudson's crew periodically appears in the mountains. Accepted once more, Rip spends his remaining years telling his experience and serving as a living link to the vanished colonial village.

The first tale leaves Ichabod Crane's fate deliberately disputed: Sleepy Hollow's believers say the Headless Horseman took him, while practical evidence points to a pumpkin-throwing prank by Brom Bones, who marries Katrina. A later report says Ichabod actually escaped and made a career elsewhere. In the second tale, Rip returns from the Catskills after sleeping through twenty years and the American Revolution. His grown daughter Judith takes him in, Peter Vanderdonk supports his account of the mountain spirits, and Rip resumes his easygoing life as a village elder. Free from his wife, who died during his absence, he tells his story to later generations, and the village absorbs his impossible experience into its local tradition.
