In the secluded Hudson Valley community of Sleepy Hollow, Connecticut schoolmaster Ichabod Crane lives by boarding with his pupils' families. He is educated but deeply susceptible to tales of ghosts, especially the local legend of a headless Hessian rider. Ichabod sets his sights on Katrina Van Tassel, the only child of a prosperous farmer, bringing him into rivalry with the athletic prankster Brom Bones. At a harvest gathering, the guests trade supernatural stories before Ichabod privately approaches Katrina and leaves disappointed. Riding home through places associated with the valley's legends, he is pursued by a mounted figure carrying its head before it. At the church bridge the pursuer throws the object, knocking Ichabod from his horse. By morning Ichabod has disappeared; only his borrowed horse, the damaged saddle, and pieces of pumpkin are found. Brom soon marries Katrina and betrays amusement at the pumpkin detail, suggesting an elaborate prank. A later traveler says Ichabod fled, studied law, and built a career elsewhere, while local believers maintain that the Headless Horseman took him.

After leaving the Van Tassel gathering, Ichabod rides through the haunted valley and is pursued by a large mounted figure whose head appears to rest on the saddle. Near the church bridge, the rider hurls the head at him. Ichabod vanishes; searchers find Gunpowder, a trampled saddle, and a shattered pumpkin, but no body. Brom Bones later marries Katrina and reacts knowingly whenever the pumpkin is mentioned, strongly suggesting that he staged the chase to remove his rival. Years afterward, a visitor reports that Ichabod survived, moved away, studied law, and entered public life. The residents who trust ghost stories continue to say that the Headless Horseman carried him off, and the abandoned schoolhouse gains its own reputation for being haunted.
