Sleepy Hollow is a quiet Dutch settlement near the Hudson whose residents preserve numerous supernatural traditions, especially the story of a headless Hessian soldier who rides at night. Ichabod Crane, the district schoolmaster, is fascinated by such tales and frightened by his own imagination. He becomes interested in Katrina Van Tassel, the only daughter of a wealthy farmer, and pictures both romance and material security. Although a report says Ichabod survived and prospered elsewhere, local tradition turns his disappearance into another Sleepy Hollow legend.

As he crosses the bridge, the pursuer hurls what looks like a severed head, knocking him from his horse. Ichabod is gone the next morning. Searchers find Gunpowder, Ichabod's hat, and a shattered pumpkin, but not Ichabod. Brom Bones later marries Katrina and reacts knowingly whenever the pumpkin is mentioned, suggesting that he staged the apparition. A later traveler reports that Ichabod survived, left the district, studied law, and entered public life. The established residents prefer a supernatural explanation, and the schoolhouse is eventually said to be haunted by the missing teacher's voice. The story leaves the horseman's identity formally unresolved while giving strong evidence for Brom's prank.
