The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby recap

On the road, Nicholas and Smike meet actor-manager Vincent Crummles and join his theatrical company. Gride's house is robbed, and documents connected to Madeline's rightful property disappear into a chain of concealment that Ralph tries to exploit. Smike's health worsens, and Nicholas takes him into the country in hope of recovery. Smike confesses his love for Kate but asks nothing from her; after years of deprivation and fear, he dies with Nicholas beside him. Nicholas returns grieving but determined to secure Madeline's safety. Ralph continues working with Squeers and others against him, unaware that Newman Noggs is collecting evidence and that an old associate named Brooker knows a secret capable of destroying him.

Newman Noggs brings Ralph's enemies and victims together, and the missing documents establishing Madeline's inheritance are recovered. Brooker then reveals that Smike was Ralph's own son, hidden from him after Ralph rejected the boy's mother. Ralph learns that the nephew he persecuted had cared for his abandoned child, while his own plots helped drive Smike through terror and illness to death. Unable to bear the discovery and the collapse of his schemes, Ralph hangs himself. Squeers's crimes lead to transportation, and the boys at Dotheboys Hall rise against the school and disperse. Nicholas marries Madeline, whose property is restored, and Kate marries Frank Cheeryble. With the Cheeryble brothers' continuing friendship, the couples, Mrs Nickleby, and Newman Noggs return to the family's old country home. Nicholas and Madeline raise children there and keep Smike's memory alive, replacing the isolation and greed represented by Ralph with a durable household built on loyalty.

Newman Noggs and Brooker expose Ralph Nickleby's crimes and reveal that Smike was Ralph's lost son. Ralph realizes that his persecution of Nicholas helped drive his own child through suffering and death, and he kills himself. Arthur Gride's scheme is defeated when the documents proving Madeline's inheritance are recovered; Madeline is free and eventually marries Nicholas. Frank Cheeryble marries Kate, while the brothers' generosity gives both couples security.
