A young gunslinger of Gilead, alone and searching for his lost horse and companions, in the days before he became the last of his kind. Hard and resourceful even when young, he rides into the deserted town of Eluria and is quickly overwhelmed, waking gravely hurt and dependent on the strange women who have taken him in.

The youngest of the women who tend the wounded Roland, gentler and more uncertain than the others. She is drawn to the gunslinger and troubled by what her sisterhood is, wearing a strange cluster of bells that seems to bind her to it. Her sympathy for Roland sets her apart from the rest.

The imperious leader of the women of Eluria, beautiful and commanding, who oversees the makeshift hospital where the wounded are kept. Beneath her nursing care lies a cold, predatory will, and she watches over Roland with an interest that is far from kind.

A young man Roland finds among the wounded held in the sisters' care, one of a pair of brothers who came to grief in Eluria. His plight helps Roland understand the true nature of the place and the danger he is in.
