Naomi (Supporting)
Also known as Nightmare Lady
Appears from the start
Scorio's absent partner, traveling south with Nox in search of help. Her skeletal Nightmare Lady form feels like a hostile presence within her, but Naomi holds herself responsible for what she has done while transformed.
Nox (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Naomi's toad companion and self-declared clutchmate. He guides her toward the Radiant Pools of Gold, protects her from the dangers of the journey, and believes the elder toads there may understand her condition.
Scorio (Protagonist)
First appears in chapter 2
A newly advanced Pyre Lord preparing to leave Last Rock with Bravern's diaries and a rose-quartz box. Grieving Naomi's absence and Lianshi's departure, he remains determined to investigate the herdsmen in the Silver Unfathom.
Lianshi (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
Scorio's reborn former companion and a researcher of the lost library. She chooses to return to Bastion with Juniper and the recovered material, seeking scholarly answers about Hell's past and the herdsmen.
Juniper (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
Lianshi's partner and research companion. Juniper leaves Last Rock with her for Bastion, carrying material from the lost library so they can investigate Hell's history and the herdsmen through its scholars.
Moira (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
One of Scorio's original friends and a trusted adviser at Last Rock. She urges him to face his grief rather than bury it, and prepares him for the responsibilities and unfamiliar abilities of his new rank.
Jova
First appears in chapter 3
A powerful former rival whom Moira considers a valuable expedition partner for Scorio. Their history is marked by distrust and an attempt on his life. Scorio entrusts her with a journal found among the hidden library's material, though she makes no commitment to his expedition.
Leonis (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 5
The reborn counterpart of Scorio's former companion, now a Flame Vault focused on training and status. He joins Jova's proposed expedition as the fastest route to greater power, despite his continuing resentment of Scorio.
Xandera (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 6
A young Blazeborn queen traveling with Scorio's group. Friendship and separation are new to her because queens normally have no equals within a hive, and she expects that adulthood will eventually draw her toward founding a hive of her own.
Flame Vault expedition companion (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 6
A Flame Vault who once studied under Scorio and now travels as his partner. Their chapter-six conversation ends the teacher-student arrangement and places them on equal footing for the expedition.
Dread Blaze expedition companion (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 6
A Dread Blaze traveling in Scorio's six-person expedition as it prepares to enter the Silver Unfathom and investigate the Tomb of Sadness.
Red Keep ruler (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 6
The long-established, time-wielding authority at the Red Keep. Moira presents her as a potentially reliable source of guidance for travel through the Silver Unfathom, where unsafe routes can displace travelers across mirrored planes.
Damien (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 7
A hostile former associate whom Scorio suspects may be working through the Red Keep. The possibility of finding him there strengthens Scorio's decision to travel deeper into Hell while pursuing the herdsmen and the Lost Cube.
Pursuing Silverine philosopher (Minor)
First appears in chapter 9
A Silverine philosopher who offers the expedition route knowledge in exchange for mana.
Grey (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 25
The Red Keep ruler's Pyre Lord consort and a defender of her interests. His touch is said to force a person to confront a worst memory or nightmare, making him one of the formidable powers surrounding her court.
Red Keep healer (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 26
The Red Keep's temporal healer. With a patient's consent, he can return the person's body to an earlier state, restoring lost life from his own lifespan while erasing memories formed after that point.
Blood Baroness (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 27
A Blood Baroness who can assess people by questioning them without controlling their decisions. She warns Scorio about the scale of a possible Silverine war, gives him diamond mana for a future advancement, and considers joining his expedition.
Former House Kraken Pyre Lady
First appears in chapter 30
A Pyre Lady with whom Scorio delays his departure from the Red Keep in order to speak.
Seamstress's ice-wielding envoy (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 30
An ice-wielding representative of the seamstress whose planned training with Scorio delays his departure from the Red Keep.
Former House Hydra Dread Blaze (Supporting)

A former academy peer of Scorio who left House Hydra after its leadership fell. Although the two have old grievances, he offers his strength to the expedition and agrees to submit to binding oaths before joining.
House Hydra Dread Blaze companion (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 30
An eager but accident-prone Dread Blaze who left House Hydra alongside Scorio's former academy peer. He offers to help with Scorio's investigation and accepts that joining the expedition will require hard oaths.
Dread Blaze recruit

A newly arrived Dread Blaze whom Damien's predictions mark as crucial to his plan involving a Silverine Son. He approaches her offering hard oaths, beginning with secrecy about the terms that follow.
Silverine expedition guide (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 33
An advanced Silverine philosopher who escorts Damien to an abstraction.
Infiltrating herdswoman (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 37
A former herdswoman who frees Scorio after a Silverine attack and leads him toward the Lost Cube. She says a rogue herdswoman faction recruited her to bring Scorio to the fortress so he can activate its stored weapons.
Fortress warden
First appears in chapter 45
The Red Keep ruler's missing sister and the oath-constrained warden of the Fortress of Symmetry. She disputes the prophecy surrounding a natural-born savior and offers Scorio her office if he can win the fortress's golden key.
Keeper (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 46
A black-clad construct guarding the repeating trial. It claims dominion over local mana and repeatedly kills Scorio and the infiltrating herdswoman.
Tenebrite lord (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 51
A powerful tenebrite host who recognizes the Nightmare Lady as a lost queen and wants her restored to that position. After Naomi rejects that outcome, he begins forcibly separating Naomi from the entity within her.
Young herdsman (Minor)
First appears in chapter 56
A young reborn herdsman living inside the Fortress of Symmetry. He is the present incarnation of an enemy from Scorio's first life, but this version of him shows no recognition of Scorio when they meet.

First appears in chapter 56
A former Red Lister revealed as a herdsman and an original contributor to the Lost Cube's construction.
Plassus

Pursuing Charnel Duke (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 61
A sun-powered pursuer closing on the damaged Lost Cube. Bound by earlier oaths connected to Scorio's capture, he can fly and is assessed at Charnel Duke rank as the survivors prepare to fight outside the fortress.
