Richard proposes and Anita accepts, leaving her engaged to Richard while the supernatural bond and personal attraction linking her to Jean-Claude remain unresolved.

Previously: Anita Blake raises the dead professionally in St. Louis and serves as a court-authorized vampire executioner. She killed Nikolaos, allowing Jean-Claude to become the city's master vampire, but he placed two mystical marks on her and calls her his human servant. Anita rejects his claim. Later cases forced her to confront the dangerous scale of her own animator power and to help Jean-Claude defeat rival master vampires. During the latest conflict, Anita began dating Richard Zeeman and learned that he is a werewolf. She was angry that he concealed it but did not reject him for being a shapeshifter. Richard wants a human relationship with her, while Jean-Claude continues to pursue her and treats their supernatural bond as the basis for a deeper partnership. Anita begins this book drawn toward Richard and determined that neither man's supernatural status will decide her choices.

Anita and Richard are trying to build an ordinary dating relationship despite his life as a werewolf and her work among the dead. Anita now knows that someone familiar with the supernatural community has been helping the group choose and secure victims, but the full bargain behind that cooperation is not yet settled. The pack leaders' effort to control Richard remains a threat beyond the immediate rescue.

Elvira Drew is exposed as part of the group abducting shapeshifters and producing recordings of their deaths. Kaspar Gunderson supplied access and information because the hunters promised relief from the curse that divides his human and swan existence. Anita and her allies free the surviving captives and end the operation; Kaspar is killed when the confrontation makes him an active threat. Marcus, Raina, and Gabriel retain their positions, and Richard still refuses to kill Marcus merely to become pack leader. Jean-Claude forces Anita to honor a compromise in which she dates both him and Richard instead of choosing Richard without giving Jean-Claude a chance. Richard proposes marriage and Anita accepts, but her agreement to Jean-Claude's courtship remains. The case closes with the human hunters defeated and Anita engaged, while both the pack challenge and the romantic triangle continue.

Richard nevertheless asks her to marry him, and she accepts, while acknowledging that the promised dates with Jean-Claude must still occur. She ends the book engaged to Richard but still bound to Jean-Claude, with the rivalry among all three now explicit.
