The eldest of the three children living at the country cottage beside the Enchanted Wood. Already an old hand at the Faraway Tree, Joe leads the way back up to its lands and helps introduce a doubting cousin to the tree's folk and their rules.

One of the two sisters at the cottage. Sensible and kind, she knows the Faraway Tree well by now and enjoys sharing its wonders - and its dangers - with the visiting cousin as the children set off on fresh adventures above the clouds.

The youngest of the three children, still full of eager delight at the magic of the tree. She joins every climb and every visit to the changing lands, and is happy to show the newcomer how it all works.

The children's cousin, who comes to stay for a while. At first he flatly refuses to believe there is anything magical about the wood and teases the others about it - but once he climbs the Faraway Tree and meets its folk for himself, he becomes as keen an adventurer as any of them.

The round-faced little fellow who lives near the top of the Faraway Tree, in the room with the slippery-slip that carries riders down through the trunk on a cushion. A loyal friend to the children, he helps guide the newcomer cousin through the tree's oddities and shares his Google Buns.

The golden-haired elf of the Faraway Tree, gentle and helpful, who welcomes the children back and offers her Pop Biscuits. She keeps track of which land sits at the top of the tree and warns the party away from the ones that are unsafe.

The kindly wanderer draped in clattering saucepans and kettles. His poor hearing turns ordinary remarks into funny misunderstandings, but he is a stout companion on the climb and in the lands above the tree.

A tree-dweller who dozes in a chair on a broad branch and whose real name nobody seems to know, which is why everyone gives him this odd label. A friend of the Saucepan Man, he is part of the familiar company the children pass on their way up the trunk.
