The Midnight Line

By Lee Child

In the 22nd Jack Reacher novel, Reacher breaks his rule of catching the first departing bus after spotting a small, genuine 2005 West Point class ring, engraved S.R.S., in a Wisconsin pawnshop window. He traces the ring backward through a chain of dealers, from a biker fence named Jimmy Rat to Rapid City laundromat owner Arthur Scorpio, drawing the attention of local detective Gloria Nakamura and a Chicago private investigator named Terrence Bramall, who is independently watching Scorpio on behalf of a client of his own. West Point confirms the ring belonged to Serena Rose Sanderson, a decorated former Army major whose current location is unknown. Reacher forces Scorpio to name the next link, a Wyoming man called Cy Porterfield, and heads toward Wyoming to follow it, unaware that Scorpio has already ordered a local gunman to kill him along the way.
