A commercial artist living beside a Maine lake with his wife and young son. David narrates the disaster, trying to balance curiosity about the unnatural mist with the practical duty of keeping Billy safe. He is observant, skeptical of easy explanations, and increasingly willing to act when waiting becomes more dangerous than moving.

David's five-year-old son. Billy accompanies his father to the supermarket after the storm and depends on him for reassurance as the adults around them become frightened and divided.
