Local people fear his destination and give him a crucifix, but he continues to Dracula's isolated castle. His host is courteous yet unnatural: he appears only at night, casts no reflection, possesses alarming strength, and reacts violently to the sight of blood. Jonathan realizes that the castle is a prison. He later sees Dracula crawl down its wall and encounters three predatory women, from whom the Count claims him for himself. Dracula studies Jonathan's speech and clothes while arranging misleading letters that will make it appear his guest has safely left. Soon afterward Lucy resumes sleepwalking. Mina finds her unconscious in the churchyard with a dark figure bending over her and notices two small wounds on her neck. Lucy grows pale and weak, while Renfield's agitation seems tied to the arrival of an unseen master. Mina then receives word that Jonathan is alive but ill in a hospital in Budapest and prepares to go to him.
