The Nose recap

Saint Petersburg barber Ivan Yakovlevich finds the nose of one of his customers inside a loaf of bread and tries to throw it away. The customer, status-conscious collegiate assessor Kovalyov, wakes to find his face blank. While seeking help, he encounters his nose dressed as an official of higher rank, but it refuses to acknowledge belonging to him. The police eventually recover the nose, yet it cannot be reattached. Kovalyov suspects that a widow has used sorcery to punish him for avoiding marriage to her daughter, but her reply undermines his theory. Rumors about the wandering nose spread through the city. Then, without explanation, Kovalyov wakes with the nose restored and returns happily to his vain social routine.

On a March morning, Saint Petersburg barber Ivan Yakovlevich cuts open a loaf prepared by his wife, Praskovya Osipovna, and finds a human nose inside. He recognizes it as belonging to Kovalyov, a regular customer, but cannot understand how it came into his possession. His wife angrily orders him to remove the evidence. Ivan wraps the nose and wanders the city looking for a place to discard it unnoticed. After failed attempts, he throws it from a bridge, only to be stopped and questioned by a police official who has observed him. The narrator breaks off before explaining what follows.

Collegiate assessor Kovalyov wakes and discovers that his nose has vanished, leaving a smooth patch on his face. He conceals the gap and goes out to seek official help. At Kazan Cathedral he sees his own nose dressed as a state councillor, a rank above his, and is too intimidated by the uniform to confront it effectively. The nose denies any connection to him and departs. Kovalyov's efforts to place a newspaper notice and make a police complaint founder on bureaucracy, disbelief, and concern for propriety. A police official eventually brings the captured nose to him, reporting that it had been intercepted while trying to leave the city. Relief turns to despair when the nose will not stay on his face and a doctor refuses to attach it. Kovalyov blames Madame Podtochina, imagining that she used supernatural means because he would not marry her daughter. Her innocent reply makes that explanation unlikely. Meanwhile, public rumors turn the nose into a citywide spectacle, with crowds gathering at supposed sightings.

Kovalyov wakes on another morning and finds his nose restored to his face as mysteriously as it disappeared. He tests it, summons Ivan Yakovlevich to shave him, and confirms that it is firmly in place. His confidence returns immediately. He goes out in public, visits shops, meets acquaintances, and again pays attention to women and signs of rank. No explanation is given for the nose's time as an independent official or for its return. The narrator admits the events are improbable but treats their occurrence, and the society around them, as facts of the tale.

After days of panic, Kovalyov wakes one morning to find his nose inexplicably back in its proper place. A barber confirms that it is firmly attached, and Kovalyov resumes shaving, visiting shops, flirting, and pursuing social advancement as though the disruption had never occurred. Ivan Yakovlevich is again permitted to shave him, though Kovalyov watches him carefully. The narrator acknowledges that the entire affair is implausible and offers no rational explanation for the nose's disappearance, independent career, or return. The story closes with ordinary Saint Petersburg life restored and its absurd social assumptions left intact.
