The One and Only Ivan recap

Ivan is a gorilla displayed for decades in a small enclosure at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall, where his companions include the elephant Stella, stray dog Bob, and young artist Julia. He accepts his confinement until Mack buys Ruby, a frightened baby elephant, to revive the failing show. As Stella's injured foot worsens, she asks Ivan to make sure Ruby reaches a safer place. After Stella dies and Mack trains Ruby harshly, Ivan finally understands that endurance is not enough. Using finger paint and many sheets of paper, he creates a large image that Julia assembles into a plea for a real home. The billboard draws reporters, protesters, and animal-welfare authorities. Ivan and Ruby are removed to a zoo. Ruby joins an elephant herd, while Ivan gradually enters an outdoor habitat and becomes part of a gorilla troop. Julia, George, and Bob later visit him, and Ivan sees that the promise he made Stella has been kept.

Ivan, a gorilla, has spent most of his life behind glass at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade. A sign presents him as a mighty attraction, but his daily world is a small enclosure furnished with a tire swing, a television, and objects people expect a gorilla to use. Ivan measures time by routines rather than calendars and prefers not to dwell on his earlier life. Mack owns the mall show and the animals in it. Ivan's closest companions are Stella, an aging elephant with a damaged foot and memories of other places, and Bob, a homeless dog small enough to enter Ivan's enclosure and sleep on him. Ivan watches humans closely and makes drawings with crayons. The pictures are sold to visitors, though the act of drawing matters to Ivan in a way the customers do not understand.

Ivan's quiet routine includes evening visits from George, the mall cleaner, and George's daughter Julia. Julia is also an artist. She gives Ivan materials, studies what he makes, and assumes that his choices have meaning. Business at the mall is declining, so Mack seeks a new attraction and brings in Ruby, a baby elephant separated from her family. Ruby's arrival draws customers but also exposes how little control the animals have over their lives. Stella comforts the frightened newcomer, and Ruby responds to stories about the wider world. Ivan is curious about her and begins to feel responsible for her, even while he continues to rely on patience as his main way of coping. The friendships among Ivan, Stella, Bob, Julia, and Ruby create a small community inside the failing roadside show.

Ruby tells the others about losing her mother and being taken from the wild. Stella's injured foot becomes badly infected, but Mack delays effective treatment as the mall's finances worsen. Stella uses her remaining strength to protect and reassure Ruby. Before she dies, she asks Ivan to promise that he will help the young elephant reach a good home rather than spend her life performing in the mall. Ivan agrees without knowing how a caged gorilla can change anything. Stella's death leaves Ruby frightened and Ivan responsible for a promise that patience alone cannot fulfill. Mack needs Ruby to keep attracting visitors and begins forcing her to learn the show. Watching her distress makes Ivan look differently at the enclosure he has long accepted and at his own role as the mall's celebrated attraction.

Mack's treatment of Ruby pushes Ivan to search for a way to keep his promise to Stella. He remembers more of his own childhood in the forest, including his twin sister Tag, the destruction that separated him from his gorilla family, and the strange years in which Mack raised him around humans before confining him at the mall. These memories help him recognize what Ruby stands to lose. Ivan studies images of animals living in zoos and begins to imagine a home where Ruby could be with other elephants. Because humans respond to pictures and words, he turns to the one tool available inside his domain: his art. With Julia's supplies and Bob's company, he works privately on many separate sheets, trying to make an idea large and clear enough for people outside the enclosure to understand.

Ivan completes a large picture from many painted sheets. Julia sees that the pieces belong together and helps arrange them into an image of Ruby in a natural setting with a simple request for a home. When the work is displayed on the mall billboard, people begin to interpret Ivan not merely as an attraction but as an animal communicating about captivity. Reporters arrive, crowds gather, and protesters demand better conditions. The attention brings animal-welfare inspectors to the mall. Mack can no longer keep the treatment and housing of Ivan and Ruby out of public view. The campaign that began with Ivan's art succeeds in opening a route beyond the mall, although leaving the only home he remembers also frightens him. Ivan and Ruby are taken away for evaluation and eventual placement at a zoo.

At the zoo, Ivan and Ruby undergo medical care and adjust to unfamiliar surroundings. Ruby is placed with other elephants, giving her the companionship and room Stella wanted for her. Ivan finds the transition harder. After years among humans and separated species, he is uncertain how to behave with a gorilla troop and initially stays inside. The keepers patiently introduce him to the outdoor habitat and the gorillas beyond the barrier. Ivan eventually steps outside, meets Kinyani, and assumes a place with the troop as a silverback. From his habitat he confirms that Ruby is safe with her herd and knows he has kept his promise. Julia and George later visit with Bob, who now lives with them. Julia shows Ivan that his rescue has been commemorated on a billboard. He acknowledges his human and canine friends through the glass, then returns to the gorillas and the life he has reclaimed.

Public attention forces Mack to surrender Ivan and Ruby, and both animals are transferred to a zoo. Ivan initially finds the unfamiliar enclosure and the company of other gorillas difficult after so many years apart from his own kind. With time and patient care he ventures outside, meets Kinyani, and joins the gorilla troop as its silverback. From his new habitat he can also see Ruby living with other elephants, fulfilling his promise to place her in a safer home. Julia and George visit, bringing Bob, who has accepted a home with them while retaining his independence. Julia shows Ivan a billboard that uses his image to celebrate his rescue. Ivan touches the glass to acknowledge his old friends, then returns to his troop. He has moved from passively enduring captivity to protecting Ruby and reclaiming a life among gorillas.
