The young Northumbrian warrior, Saxon by birth and Danish by upbringing, still bound to the service of King Alfred of Wessex. Having killed the Danish warlord Ubba, he expects reward and instead finds the credit stolen and his loyalty doubted. Restless, proud, and happier raiding at sea than kneeling in Alfred's pious court, he chafes against his marriage and his oath even as the survival of the last English kingdom comes to rest, in part, on his sword.

King of Wessex, the last English realm holding against the Danes: devout, sickly, and coldly intelligent. He mistrusts Uhtred's Danish sympathies and his rough manners, yet needs his fighting skill. When a surprise Danish assault shatters his kingdom and drives him into hiding, Alfred's stubbornness and faith - not his strength of arm - become the thin thread from which Wessex's survival hangs.

A hard, blunt West Saxon warrior and one of the few men Uhtred genuinely likes. The two share command of a ship and a taste for plunder, raiding the coast together under the cover of pretending to be Danes. Loyal, foul-mouthed, and fearless, Leofric is the sort of steady companion Uhtred trusts at his shoulder in a shield wall.

A young British woman from Cornwall, said to be a shadow queen with the gift of prophecy, whom Uhtred carries off during a raid. Dark, strange, and reputed to see what is hidden, she becomes his lover and, to his half-pagan mind, a source of luck and foresight amid disaster. Her presence deepens the strain on his marriage even as Wessex falls into ruin around them.

Uhtred's Saxon wife, pious and long-suffering, tied to him by a marriage neither truly wanted and by a debt owed to the Church. Her devout faith and her grief set her ever further apart from a husband who prefers the sea, the old gods, and other company, and the war that engulfs Wessex leaves her fearful for their household and their child.

A Danish king and one of the chief war-leaders set on conquering Wessex. Cautious, superstitious, and given to wearing a bone in his hair in mourning, he is less a berserk fighter than a patient schemer. He breaks a sworn peace with a midwinter surprise attack meant to end the English kingdom at a stroke.

A Danish chieftain who rides beneath the sign of a white horse and leads his own war-band by sea. Bold and treacherous, he falls in with Uhtred during a season of raiding along the British coast, an alliance of convenience between two men who each intend to use the other. He is among the Danes gathering to fall on a weakened Wessex.

First appears in chapter 2

A giant of a West Saxon warrior, immensely strong and at first Uhtred's enemy, forced into a duel with him before events throw them onto the same side. Slow of speech but formidable in a fight and fiercely loyal to Alfred, Steapa becomes, over the campaign, one of Uhtred's staunchest companions in the shield wall.

The squint-eyed, kindly priest of Uhtred's Northumbrian childhood, now a trusted cleric at Alfred's court. Devout and loyal to the king, he keeps a stubborn faith in Uhtred despite the younger man's pagan leanings, and he shares in the desperate flight and recovery of a kingdom on the edge of destruction.
