Rand al'Thor (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

The Dragon Reborn, crowned King of Illian, ruling many lands and commanding the Aiel and the Asha'man, but bearing two wounds that will not heal and hearing an intruding voice as the taint gnaws at his mind. Cold, driven, and dangerously mistrustful, he turns to throw back the Seanchan invasion sweeping up out of the south.

Perrin Aybara (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Rand's steady friend, a wolfbrother and lord of the Two Rivers, sent by the Dragon to bring a fanatical self-styled Prophet to heel. Deliberate and loyal, he travels with Faile and a mixed following, uneasy in the role of commander and worried for those under his care.

Faile (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The proud, fierce noblewoman wed to Perrin, managing his followers and household as he carries out the Dragon's errand. Courageous and sharp, she guards her husband's interests and honor with a will as strong as his is patient.

Egwene al'Vere (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The innkeeper's daughter of Emond's Field, raised Amyrlin Seat of the rebel Aes Sedai, steadily mastering the older sisters who thought to rule through her. Iron-willed and subtle, she means to force an open reckoning with the usurper Elaida and to reunite a broken Tower on her own terms.

Nynaeve al'Meara (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The former Wisdom of Emond's Field, a channeler of great strength and a gifted Healer, wed to Lan and freed at last of her old dependence on anger to reach the Power. Proud and relentless, she works beside Elayne and Aviendha as their errands turn toward Caemlyn.

Elayne Trakand (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The Daughter-Heir of Andor, a strong channeler returning to Caemlyn to press her claim to the Lion Throne that is hers by blood. Poised and determined, she prepares for the hard political struggle to win a crown amid rival houses and a fractured realm.

Aviendha (Supporting)

Appears from the start

An Aiel woman training to be a Wise One and a channeler, proud, blunt, and bound by strict honor, and first-sister by adoption to Elayne. She travels with Elayne and Nynaeve, uneasy in wetlander lands and fiercely loyal to those she has taken as family.

Min (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A blunt young woman who foresees the future in images only she can see, now constantly at Rand's side and dear to him, one of the very few he still wholly trusts. Practical and warm, she watches the Dragon Reborn slide toward hardness and tries to hold him human.

Lan (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The uncrowned last king of a fallen Borderland realm and a matchless swordsman, Warder and husband to Nynaeve. Grim and steadfast, he guards her through every danger, his old fatalism softened a little by an unlooked-for marriage.

Cadsuane (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A legendary, imperious Aes Sedai of great age and greater reputation, who has attached herself to Rand and his Asha'man. Blunt and uncompromising, she means to teach the Dragon Reborn to face what is coming without losing his humanity, entirely on her own severe terms.

Sevanna (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 4

The ambitious, ruthless leader of the renegade Shaido Aiel, who reject the Dragon Reborn's authority. Grasping and cunning, she drives her people to seize power, plunder, and captives wherever they roam, hungry for standing among the Aiel and beyond.
