The Pilgrim's Progress: A New Translation recap

Christian leaves the City of Destruction after learning of coming judgment and follows a difficult road toward the Celestial City. He is rescued from false counsel, enters through the narrow gate, receives instruction, and loses his burden at the Cross. After shelter at the Palace Beautiful, he defeats Apollyon and crosses the Valley of the Shadow of Death. Faithful joins him but is executed at Vanity Fair; Hopeful, converted by that witness, becomes Christian's next companion. The pair resist profit-seeking travelers, escape Giant Despair's Doubting Castle, learn from shepherds, and survive deception on the last stages of the road. After passing through Beulah, Christian and Hopeful cross the final river and are admitted to the Celestial City. Ignorance reaches the gate by an easier route but lacks the required certificate and is rejected, closing the journey with a warning against confidence without inward change.

Christian becomes convinced that the City of Destruction is doomed and feels a heavy burden he cannot remove. His household refuses to believe him, so he follows Evangelist's direction toward a distant light. Obstinate turns back, while Pliable briefly joins him before abandoning the journey when both sink in the Slough of Despond. Help rescues Christian, but Worldly Wiseman diverts him toward a supposedly easier cure beneath a threatening mountain. Evangelist corrects him and sends him back to the narrow gate. Goodwill admits Christian and directs him to the Interpreter, whose house contains lessons about true ministry, patience, hidden grace, courage, despair, and judgment. Christian leaves with a clearer understanding of the road, though he still carries his burden.

Christian reaches the Cross, where his burden falls away. Shining Ones clothe him anew, assure him of forgiveness, and give him a certificate for the gate at his destination. He passes sleeping travelers and rejects the claims of Formalist and Hypocrisy, who entered by climbing the wall. On the Hill Difficulty he falls asleep and loses his certificate, then must retrace his path to recover it. He crosses safely between chained lions and is welcomed at the Palace Beautiful. Its residents question him about his journey, teach him from their records, show him the country ahead, and equip him with armor. Rested and prepared, he descends from the palace toward the next valley.

In the Valley of Humiliation, Apollyon claims Christian as a runaway subject and attacks when Christian refuses to return. Christian is wounded but recovers his sword and drives the enemy away. He then passes through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, enduring darkness, traps, hostile voices, and fear before reaching daylight. He catches up with Faithful, another pilgrim from the City of Destruction, and they compare the different temptations they have survived. Talkative joins them and displays impressive religious language, but Faithful's examination reveals that his conduct does not match his speech. He withdraws angrily. Evangelist then warns Christian and Faithful that persecution awaits them in the town ahead and that one may die there.

Christian and Faithful enter Vanity Fair, a permanent market for status, pleasure, possessions, and power. Their refusal to buy its goods and their unfamiliar manner provoke abuse, imprisonment, and a public trial. Lord Hate-Good presides while hostile witnesses portray Faithful's rejection of the fair's values as a crime. Faithful is condemned and executed, but a heavenly escort carries him immediately toward the Celestial City. Christian is later released and leaves Vanity with Hopeful, a resident whose conversion has been encouraged by the pilgrims' conduct and Faithful's death. The loss of one companion thus produces another, and Christian continues the journey with Hopeful beside him.

Christian and Hopeful reject By-Ends, who changes his principles whenever advantage requires it. They also resist Demas's invitation to inspect a silver mine and are warned by the fate associated with Lot's wife. After a peaceful stretch beside the River of Life, difficult ground tempts them onto the easier By-Path Meadow. A storm prevents their return, and Giant Despair captures them for trespassing on his land. In Doubting Castle he beats and starves them while Diffidence urges him to drive them toward death. Christian finally remembers that he carries a key called Promise. It opens the prison doors and the outer gate, allowing both pilgrims to escape. They return to the true road and erect a warning against the meadow.

On the Delectable Mountains, shepherds feed Christian and Hopeful, show them instructive dangers, and give them directions for the remaining road. The pilgrims meet Ignorance, a confident young man who expects acceptance because of his own good intentions and conduct. Christian and Hopeful challenge the basis of his confidence but cannot persuade him. They later encounter a traveler who has turned back after being robbed and warned. These meetings reinforce the shepherds' lesson that proximity to the destination does not remove the danger of error. Christian and Hopeful continue with both encouragement and warnings for the final stage.

Christian and Hopeful fail to consult their directions and follow the Flatterer, who leads them into a net. A shining messenger releases and disciplines them, after which they become more cautious. They reject an atheist's claim that the Celestial City does not exist and enter the Enchanted Ground, where sleep threatens travelers. To stay awake, Hopeful tells the story of his conversion, including the effect of Faithful's witness and his struggle to abandon confidence in himself. The pilgrims again discuss Ignorance and the danger of temporary belief that fades under pressure. They pass through the last deceptive country and approach Beulah, a land of light and rest within sight of their destination.

In Beulah, Christian and Hopeful are refreshed and can see the Celestial City, but a river without a bridge lies before it. Christian struggles in deep water and fears he will be lost; Hopeful supports him until both reach the opposite bank. Shining guides escort them up the final ascent. Their certificates are presented at the gate, and they are welcomed into the city with new clothing, music, and public rejoicing. Ignorance later crosses the river by a ferryman who provides an easier passage. At the gate he has no certificate and appeals instead to his own record. The King refuses him entry, and he is bound and carried away through a door in the hillside. Christian and Hopeful complete the pilgrimage; Ignorance's rejection supplies the final warning that outward progress and self-confidence cannot replace the required inward reality.

In the land of Beulah, Christian and Hopeful can see the Celestial City but must first cross a river with no bridge. Christian nearly gives way to fear in the deep water; Hopeful encourages him until both reach the far bank, where shining guides escort them uphill. At the gate their certificates are accepted, and they enter the city to welcome, music, and transformed life. The narrator then sees Ignorance arrive by a ferryman's easier crossing. Because he has no valid certificate, the King refuses him entry despite his confidence and orders him taken away through a door in the hillside. Christian and Hopeful therefore complete the pilgrimage together, while Ignorance's fate supplies the final warning that reaching the gate and claiming worthiness are not the same as being admitted.
