Jake's reputation collapses, while Anna inherits his estate and keeps the more dangerous truth hidden.

Jacob Finch Bonner once seemed likely to have a major literary career, but his debut's promise has faded through weak sales, failed follow-ups, and years without a viable new book. He now teaches at a low-residency program, privately envious of students who still believe success awaits them. Evan Parker, an arrogant seminar participant, declares that he possesses a plot certain to become a bestseller and a major film. When Jake challenges him, Evan reveals enough of the story to prove that the claim is not empty. Jake recognizes the premise as unusually powerful and returns to his own stalled life unable to forget it.

Years pass without the novel Evan predicted appearing. Jake searches for his former student and learns that Evan died before publishing the story. He convinces himself that an idea left unused should not vanish with its owner and writes a novel, Crib, around the plot he heard in the seminar. The result transforms his career: his agent Matilda Salter and editor Wendy Marder help launch the book into enormous sales, critical attention, translation deals, and a screen adaptation. Jake has achieved everything he wanted, but he knows that the success rests on a premise he did not originate, and each public question about inspiration tests the explanation he has prepared.

Crib becomes a cultural phenomenon, taking Jake through interviews, appearances, and the unfamiliar life of a famous author. He meets Anna Williams and begins a serious relationship that seems separate from the machinery of publication. Then an anonymous user calling TalentedTom contacts him with a direct accusation: Jake stole Evan Parker's plot. The sender knows enough to make dismissal impossible. Jake hides the messages from the people protecting his career and tries to determine whether they come from someone at the writing program, a publishing insider, or a person close to Evan. His fear shifts from private guilt to the practical prospect of losing his reputation, income, and new relationship.

The accusations continue, and Jake begins investigating Evan rather than waiting for the sender to expose him. He retraces his former student's education, death, and family connections, looking for anyone who might know what Evan planned to write. The inquiry shows that Evan's premise was not merely an abstract invention: it echoes a real and carefully obscured history within his family. Deaths, changed identities, and missing pieces of public record suggest that someone had a much stronger reason than literary fairness to prevent the story from being published. Jake's search becomes dangerous because learning where the plot came from also means approaching the person whose secret it contains.

Jake follows the Parker family trail through records and surviving connections, gradually reconstructing the crime behind Evan's proposed novel. Evan knew a family member had built a new life on concealed violence and intended to turn that truth into fiction. His supposedly accidental early death now appears connected to the same secret. Jake also notices gaps in what Anna has told him about her own past. Details that once seemed private but harmless begin to align with the identities in his investigation, forcing him to consider that the person sharing his life may have approached him because of Crib rather than by chance.

Jake confirms that Anna is tied to Evan Parker's family and to the hidden crime that supplied Evan's plot. She is also TalentedTom, the anonymous accuser. Anna killed Evan before he could publish a fictional version of the family truth, then entered Jake's life after Crib made that same secret famous. Her messages were a way to pressure him and learn how much he had discovered. Once Jake confronts the full connection, Anna kills him and stages the death as suicide. She leaves a confession in which Jake admits stealing Evan's premise, giving the public a persuasive reason for his shame and death while diverting attention from her own crimes. Jake is remembered as a fraudulent author, and Anna survives as his widow and heir, in control of both his literary estate and the accepted version of events.

Jake's search establishes that Evan did not invent the supposedly unbeatable premise from nothing: it grew out of concealed crimes in the Parker family. Jake also discovers that Anna is connected to that family and is the person behind the anonymous accusations. She killed Evan to stop him from publishing a story rooted in what she had done, then entered Jake's life after he turned Evan's idea into a bestseller. Once Jake understands her identity, Anna cannot allow him to expose her. She kills him and constructs a public explanation in which guilt over stealing Evan's plot led him to suicide. The confession she leaves behind destroys Jake's authorship while protecting the deeper family secret. Anna, now Jake's widow and literary heir, survives with control of his estate and of the story the public accepts.
