The fourth of the nine Loric children, now a fugitive. After the battle in Paradise, Ohio, that killed his guardian Henri, he is on the run with Number Six and his friend Sam Goode, wanted by federal authorities who believe he is a terrorist responsible for destroying a school. His Legacies are still arriving and still unreliable, and he is grieving the only family he had. He wants two things that pull against each other: to find the rest of the nine, and to go back for the girl he left behind in Ohio.

The sixth of the nine Loric children, and the most experienced fighter among the survivors. She can turn invisible, control weather, and think tactically about a war the others are still learning exists. She spent years hunting Mogadorians alone before she found John in Paradise, and she has little patience for his attachments to Earth or for waiting. She takes over John's training and pushes the group toward finding the remaining Garde.

Appears from the start

John's human friend from Paradise, who left everything behind to come with him. He has no powers and knows it, but he is the only one of them who grew up reading about this war from the outside, and his father's old research keeps turning out to matter. Loyal past the point of sense, he insists on being part of the fighting rather than being protected from it.

The book's second narrator: the seventh of the nine, seventeen years old, living in a convent orphanage in the town of Santa Teresa in northern Spain. She has spent years in a place where nothing happens, untrained and largely unarmed, teaching herself what she can from what the nuns leave lying around. She has quietly developed healing and the ability to breathe underwater, and she scours newspapers and library computers for any report strange enough to be another of her kind. Patient, watchful, and increasingly unwilling to keep waiting for a guardian who has given up.

Marina's Cepan, who fled Lorien charged with training and protecting her. Years of hiding wore her down; she took vows at the Santa Teresa convent, embraced her new life as a nun, and now refuses to speak about Lorien, to train Marina, or to say where she hid Marina's Chest. She treats their mission as a delusion best left alone, which leaves Marina effectively alone in a hostile household.

A small girl at the Santa Teresa orphanage who attaches herself to Marina and follows her everywhere. She is sharp, curious, and unafraid of the nuns, and she asks the sort of questions that make Marina careful. She arrived at the convent recently and is the closest thing Marina has to a friend.

A man from Santa Teresa who lives with his elderly mother and is known around town mainly for drinking. He befriends Marina, who sees past the local verdict on him, and he proves to be observant, generous, and braver than his reputation. He becomes the only adult in the town Marina can rely on.

The girl John left behind in Paradise, Ohio. She stood by him after learning what he is, but the manhunt that followed the destruction of the high school has put her under the attention of federal agents. John cannot stop thinking about her, and Six regards any contact with her as an unacceptable risk.

Appears from the start

The Chimaera who has guarded John since Lorien, most often in the shape of a beagle. He travels with the group, changes form as the situation requires, and communicates with John directly. He is treated as a member of the team rather than a pet.

First appears in chapter 12

Sam's father, who vanished from Paradise years before after becoming convinced that visitors from another world had come to Earth. He left behind a hidden collection of research, maps, and notes that Sam never knew existed. What he was actually working on turns out to be accurate, and it gives the group the first solid lead they have ever had on the enemy's operations.

The ninth of the nine Loric children, held prisoner deep inside a Mogadorian mountain base. He has survived captivity by being harder than his captors, and he is loud, reckless, and physically the strongest of the Garde met so far, with the ability to move along walls and ceilings as though gravity had no claim on him. His Cepan, Sandor, did not survive the capture.

First appears in chapter 32

The Cepan who arrives in Spain for Marina and Ella. He came to Earth on a second Loric ship, later than the first, and he carries the part of Lorien's history that the nine were never told. He is calm, prepared, and clearly has been searching for a long time.
