In short (whole book)
Jake Thayne forces the Holy Church to surrender Ell'Hakan's soul and leave the Milky Way after Carmen permanently destroys the Desolate Child of Loss. With Earth entering a controlled opening to the wider multiverse, Jake travels to the Pantheon of Life, begins a cautious relationship with Artemis, and entrusts the Fallen King's fragment and remaining memories to Yggdrasil for reconstruction. He then undertakes a solo hunt to test his archery and prepare for B-grade. Jake kills the Simivita Warlord and several other B-grades, develops arrows that resist time effects, and uncovers a Court of Shadows contract against him. Umbra strengthens the contracted Darkwood Chimera as a greater trial, but Jake kills it and accepts the surveillance risk of her Umbral Cloak. The Rainbow Feather Sovereign kills the Forest Fae, while Jake gains Event Horizon and leaves with his damaged soul ability, the contract's issuer, and the Fallen King's restoration still unresolved.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Jake Thayne emerged from Nevermore with his companions and returned to a Milky Way divided by Ell'Hakan and the Holy Church. Jake defeated Ell'Hakan, but the Church removed and retained his true soul, denying Jake the final resolution of the hunt and preserving the possibility that Ell'Hakan's influence could return. The conflict also left Earth and its allies responsible for stabilizing a newly integrated galaxy as the 93rd Universe approached the end of its protected event period. Jake remains the Malefic Viper's Chosen and one of Earth's central powers, while Miranda manages government and diplomacy, Arnold develops void-based technology, and Caleb represents the increasingly established Court of Shadows. Jake also carries a fragment connected to Yip of Yore, the Starlight Heart left by the Celestial Child, and serious damage to a Viper-linked soul ability. That damage makes a safe advance to B-grade uncertain. Beyond Earth, his Nevermore connections include the Sword Saint, Sylphie, Dina, Minaga, the Fallen King, and Artemis, whose divine image formed an unusually personal bond with him during the dungeon.
Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)
Jake bypasses the Holy Church's defenses and demands that Ell'Hakan's true soul be released. The Lodestar Matron instead proposes a temporary resurrection intended to preserve Ell'Hakan's bloodline under Church control. Jake refuses, and the prepared negotiation becomes an attack. At the same time, an anti-Earth army tries to lure Miranda into a suppression formation, but her allies reverse the ambush. Its leader attempts to desert his soldiers, surrenders after his escape fails, and is executed by Miranda while the remaining troops receive a chance to atone. At the Church headquarters, Jacob reluctantly releases the Desolate Child of Loss, a regenerated false god born when Ell'Hakan's indoctrinated followers attempted a fractured faith summoning. Carmen arrives and contains the entity because her Rune Maiden body resists desolation. She destroys both its body and the faith sustaining it, leaving a fragment of the Fallen King. With the militant Church force defeated, Jacob assumes authority, surrenders the Church's Milky Way presence, and releases Ell'Hakan's soul to the system. The immediate false-god and bloodline crisis ends, and the Holy Church agrees to evacuate the galaxy.
Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)
Jake returns to Earth after the Church surrender. Miranda takes responsibility for withdrawal terms, reparations, prisoners, and the political reconstruction of the Milky Way. Arnold's containment cube holds the captured loyalist elites, and his planned communications network will replace event-era infrastructure once travel restrictions vanish. Carmen departs for obligations to her own faction but remains willing to join a worthwhile expedition. Jake resumes alchemy and study of the First Sage's tome while preparing for B-grade, although he also wants a true-dragon hunt before advancing. His poison-gas experiments damage his laboratory, prompting Hank and Arnold to add stronger defenses. The Holy Church complies with the evacuation and provides material compensation as Earth develops common galactic laws. Jake then learns Caleb has returned and travels to visit him. Caleb explains that Umbra prohibited the Court of Shadows from accepting contracts from any side during the recent war. The Court now performs mercenary, defense, and rescue work on Earth while its judges police unacceptable commissions. Jake reaches Caleb's fortified family home, where Caleb lives with Maya and their son.
Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)
Jake spends an extended break with Caleb, Maya, their son, and his parents. He accepts that his parents prefer ordinary work and family life to the relentless advancement pursued by their sons. Maya, who also avoids direct violence, has begun studying summoning after guidance from Jacob. The holiday ends when the system closes the 93rd Universe's event and schedules controlled outside entry: visitors may arrive after one hundred days under a level cap that will rise gradually. Jake returns to Haven as the top administrator left after Ell'Hakan's death. The Malefic Viper advises that stable rule depends on trusted administrators and a clear direction as much as personal strength. Miranda reports that the Holy Church's mass withdrawal is nearly complete, with abandoned worlds and reparations supporting reconstruction. She and the Sword Saint present Earth's alliances and powerful patrons as deterrents against incoming factions. Jake endorses their administration while warning that he will intervene if necessary. With his immediate political appearance complete, he plans to return to the First Universe and join a diplomatic visit to the Pantheon of Life, where he expects to meet Artemis and Yggdrasil.
Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)
Jake transports an Earth delegation to the Order of the Malefic Viper. Erin receives the visitors, while Duskleaf continues protecting the interests of Jake's absent healer companion. The Malefic Viper warns Jake that the corruption in his Viper-linked soul ability remains a serious barrier to B-grade. He gives Jake a refined fragment of Yip of Yore's records but instructs him not to use it until the damage is resolved. Jake also retains the Starlight Heart, whose concealed bloodline functions remain unsafe to test. Meanwhile, the Sword Saint is revealed as Miyamoto while opening relations between his clan and an Order vampire family through an ancient Blood Legacy. He refuses an offer of vampirism but secures future contact between the groups. Jake, Miyamoto, and Sylphie then join a large public delegation to the Pantheon of Life. The Malefic Viper supplies sealed gifts for Artemis, Yggdrasil, and Nature's Attendant. Minaga joins through an S-grade proxy, and Duskleaf travels among the divine escorts. During the voyage, Jake studies the Pantheon's protection of ecological balance while Sylphie practices meditation. Their ship finally approaches the immense tree where Yggdrasil is rooted.
Story so far - through chapter 39 (this book)
The Order delegation arrives inside Yggdrasil's vast realm. Duskleaf ensures that Jake is included despite objections to a C-grade mortal joining the divine reception. Yggdrasil and Nature's Attendant treat him as a personally invited guest, and Nature's Attendant publicly acknowledges an unpaid favor. In private, Jake gives them the Malefic Viper's gifts and asks for help restoring the Fallen King. The King's fragment retains a body blueprint, while Jake's mask holds lingering soul-memory. Yggdrasil accepts the long reconstruction attempt and will call Jake when his participation is needed. Artemis then becomes Jake's escort. They discuss the end of Ell'Hakan, travel together on her divine mount, and address the connection formed through her Nevermore image. Both agree to explore a real relationship slowly, without a worship-based imbalance. Artemis shows Jake the Pantheon's diverse society and agrees to train him in archery. At Jake's assigned palace, he gives her the Viper's sealed gift: an elixir designed to improve her prospects of advancing to God Queen. She has not used it, but the gift makes the Viper's approval clear. Artemis remains with Jake under the formal cover of her escort role.
Story so far - through chapter 46 (this book)
Jake reunites with Miyamoto, Dina, and Sylphie after spending time with the Pantheon's gods. Sylphie has defeated several supervised local groups, while Dina continues developing her independence and skills. Jake tells them the Fallen King's restoration is underway, and Dina suggests that Nature's Attendant might eventually create him an evolving living bow. The group separates for individual training and hunting. Minaga assists Yggdrasil with formations, Miyamoto travels with Dina, and Sylphie plans to visit a nearby wind settlement. Artemis begins intensive archery instruction with Jake through equalized virtual duels. She demonstrates how conceptual understanding can alter speed, force, and even an arrow's relationship with time. Jake initially fails to reproduce her methods, but recognizes that his own path depends on exceptional perception, intuition, and genuine danger rather than abstract study alone. He also continues studying the First Sage's tome in hopes of repairing the corrupted soul ability before evolution. Artemis selects a hunting planet containing peak C-grades and weaker B-grades. She gives Jake a travel and contact token but promises no concealed escort. Jake enters the hunting ground alone, seeking real pressure and a conceptual breakthrough.
Story so far - through chapter 54 (this book)
Jake's first local kill summons an entire flock of high-level Rainbow Feather birds. He uses a wide poison-gas trap to kill the healers and then eliminates the flock, attracting the eventual hostility of a B-grade Rainbow Feather Sovereign. Continuing toward the Grand Lake, Jake meets an endangered Warp Snatcher and gives it a monster core before resuming his archery practice. An emergency signal then leads him to a Dryad and High Elf defending five endangered Fortuna ferret kits from a Simivita force. The pair cannot relocate the animals safely, and the Simivita Chieftain refuses negotiation. Jake provides ranged support and accepts the chieftain's formal duel to keep the wider groups out of danger. He defeats the spirit-calling leader with movement, poison, and close combat. Before dying, the chieftain orders the tribe to retreat. The ferret mother returns and agrees to move with her kits into territory emptied by Jake's earlier flock battle. The two hunters escort the family away and offer Jake future hospitality. Jake then turns his attention to the tribe's B-grade Simivita Warlord, choosing him as the target of his first deliberate B-grade hunt.
Story so far - through chapter 60 (this book)
Jake spends weeks on Simivita Island, killing combatants while avoiding children and redirecting outside attackers away from civilians. He develops a subtle poison gas and uses repeated strikes to draw the B-grade Warlord into an isolated confrontation. During the same period, the 93rd Universe opens to outside travel. Scarlet leads an Order and Dragonflight delegation to Earth, where Miranda enforces a generally open but rule-bound policy. Early cultural clashes remain manageable, and productive arrivals include Altmar Empire researchers working with Arnold. In the hunt, the Warlord phases into a spirit state and summons ancestral fighters, but Jake determines that the constructs have exploitable flaws. The Warlord eventually burns his own soul to bind Jake for an ambush by the approaching Rainbow Feather Sovereign. Jake escapes the restraint, kills the Warlord, and gains two levels, completing his first B-grade kill. The Sovereign immediately pursues him to avenge the destroyed flock. Its sound-based tracking, armored legs, and rapid aerial melee prove more dangerous than the Warlord. Jake wounds it with an arrow, but he remains injured and under a full combat boost while facing an opponent with greater speed and deeper reserves.
Story so far - through chapter 65 (this book)
The Rainbow Feather Sovereign drives Jake through the jungle and into the Grand Lake, where its sonic attacks cause severe internal damage. Jake's prospects worsen when the bird uses a health potion, but a final exchange during Moment of the Primal Hunter produces the insight he has been seeking: instead of controlling time, he can make an arrow resist time's influence. The resulting shot pierces the Sovereign's chest. Nine other B-grades arrive before either combatant can finish the duel. Jake removes much of his poison from the Sovereign rather than reward the opportunists, then escapes. The Warp Snatcher shelters the unconscious Jake in its hidden hoard and helps him recover. His attempted archery improvement becomes Unblemished Arcane Arrows of the Horizon, allowing his active arcane control to oppose conceptual effects such as time. Elsewhere, Sylphie leaves with local S-grade Sylphs to visit a wind settlement. After two weeks, Jake is able to leave the cavern. The Warp Snatcher asks for help leaving the hunting planet, and Jake promises only to explore lawful options. He secretly marks the nine B-grades who interrupted his duel and begins a retaliation hunt.
Story so far - through chapter 70 (this book)
Jake's new time-resistant arrows and prepared opening attacks let him kill several B-grades in rapid succession. The Forest Fae, a powerful tree, and a lion-like fighter investigate the deaths and discuss the possibility that killing an exceptional C-grade hunter could earn a route off the planet. Jake observes them and adds their group to his targets. The lioness, revealed as the Fulminated Emeraldclaw Prideleader, confronts him after receiving a false account of his conflict with the Sovereign. During their fast close-range battle, she recognizes that the Forest Fae manipulated her. Mortally wounded, she asks Jake to kill the Fae before he ends the fight. Jake then assaults the B-grade tree's concealed domain with poison, Eternal Hunger, and sustained arrows, destroying it and its island defenses. The Forest Fae has already abandoned her own prepared position. In a separate hunt, Miyamoto spends hours eroding a B-grade tortoise's defenses and kills it with a repeated finishing technique, though exhaustion leaves him unconscious and Dina must carry him to safety. Jake searches unsuccessfully for the Fae, spares unrelated non-hostile B-grades, and travels toward the Rainbow Feather Sovereign's territory to settle their unfinished conflict.
Story so far - through chapter 75 (this book)
Jake finds the Rainbow Feather Sovereign alone and apparently defenseless. The bird refuses to fight, correctly judging that passive prey offers Jake no worthwhile hunt. Jake therefore lets it live. The Sovereign uses its sound magic to trace the Forest Fae into the domain of the Darkwood Chimera, the planet's strongest known B-grade. Jake and the Sovereign form a limited alliance: Jake will fight the Chimera alone, while the Sovereign keeps the Fae occupied. The Chimera reveals that an outside power has offered it entry into the multiverse if it kills Jake. Its Shadow Vault technique exposes a connection to the Court of Shadows, and the Malefic Viper later learns that the creature is a candidate completing assassinations for admission. He declines to intervene. Jake poisons the Chimera and draws it into terrain that restricts its reach, but it transforms into a compact, heavily armed shape with phasing axe tendrils, a barrier, and a ranged beam. Jake leaves Eternal Hunger embedded inside it, both feeding the weapon and preventing Shadow Vault from moving the Chimera while it carries another living entity. The creature remains alive and dangerous under accumulating poison, curses, and arrow wounds.
Story so far - through chapter 81 (this book)
The Darkwood Chimera pulls Jake into Umbra's Shadow Realm, where it gains stronger regeneration and suppression. Umbra appears, explains that Jake's Eternal Shadow contains records from a simulated version of him who followed her, and offers to increase the trial. Jake agrees. She merges his old cloak into the Chimera, granting it new shadow defenses and attacks. Jake's hands begin to fail under repeated impacts, but during Moment of the Primal Hunter he draws on Valdemar's records and upgrades Fangs of Man so a wielded weapon can reinforce the hand holding it. He destroys the Chimera's suppression organ and kills the creature with a final combination of arrows, poison, marks, and Eternal Shadow. Umbra rewards him with the soulbound Umbral Cloak. It can conceal and protect him, but also lets her locate him. She offers the contract issuer's identity if Jake becomes her Chosen; he refuses and keeps the cloak. Back in the ordinary world, the Rainbow Feather Sovereign kills the Forest Fae without Jake's help. Jake selects the mythical Event Horizon skill, which designates and locates prey while making distant arrows seek their target. He prepares to leave after several final stops, with the unknown contract issuer, his unsafe B-grade evolution, and the Fallen King's reconstruction unresolved.
How does it end? (ending)
Jake kills the Darkwood Chimera inside Umbra's Shadow Realm after accepting a harder version of the contracted fight. Umbra remakes his discarded cloak into the soulbound Umbral Cloak, which can hide and defend him but also allows her to locate him. She offers the name of the unknown party behind the contract if Jake abandons the Malefic Viper and becomes her Chosen. Jake refuses, yet keeps the cloak. He then chooses the mythical Event Horizon skill, gaining a new way to designate, locate, and strike distant prey. The Rainbow Feather Sovereign completes his separate battle by killing the Forest Fae. Jake's hunting trip is nearly finished, though he still intends to honor his limited promise to the endangered Warp Snatcher. Elsewhere, Earth is managing controlled multiversal access under Miranda, the Holy Church has left the Milky Way, Artemis and Jake are slowly exploring a relationship, and Yggdrasil and Nature's Attendant are attempting to rebuild the Fallen King. Jake still cannot safely evolve to B-grade until he repairs the corrupted Viper-linked ability in his soul. The identity of the contract issuer remains unknown.
