In short (whole book)
Jake Thayne enters a ten-day Treasure Hunt in the ruined vampire realm of Yalsten with Sylphie and Haven's allies. He uncovers the realm's cursed history, kills several Counts of Blood, gathers powerful relics, and joins rival factions in activating a spire that begins Yalsten's collapse. The coalition defeats the awakened Monarch of Blood after severe losses and withdrawals. Jake then wagers the resulting divine blood legacy in his long-awaited duel with Miyamoto. Miyamoto's costly transcendence turns the battle, and Jake loses by a fraction as the event ends. Back on Earth, Jake receives the Premier Treasure Hunter title, learns that a new lifeform linked to the dead King of the Forest inhabits his mask, and prepares for an auction. Sylphie leaves to train independently, while Jake takes a replacement bow and begins traveling toward his family.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Jake Thayne became the owner and principal defender of Haven while developing as both a hunter and an alchemist. Sylphie, his powerful hawk companion, is treated as family and shares a close bond with him. Miranda manages Haven's affairs, Neil researches spatial magic and teleportation, and Jake's brother Caleb leads within the Court of Shadows. Jake follows a path connected to his primordial patron Villy, the Malefic Viper.
Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)
Haven attracts more than forty independent D-grades ahead of the Treasure Hunt, but many doubt the settlement until Jake and Sylphie display enough power to deter them. Miranda briefs the entrants, Jake supplies potions, and the major factions organize their own forces. Jake and Sylphie enter together, arriving with the Haven group in a mist-covered fallen realm where divine contact is blocked and early departure forfeits all rewards. The participants split up. Arnold establishes technological reconnaissance, while Jake and Sylphie discover that their hunt storage is shared even across distance. Jake enters an abandoned city within a mountain and survives an archive's defenses. Its record names the realm Yalsten and explains that a vampire king tried to sustain his people through a vast curse ritual. The curse instead corrupted the mist and consumed almost the entire world. A hidden structure in the Mistless Plains holds power associated with the vampires' true ancestor, but opening it requires nine keys held by Counts of Blood. Jake now knows the hunt's central objective, while the Sword Saint and the Holy Church are already locating vampire chambers of their own.
Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)
Jake pushes toward the Count hidden in the mountain tower. Elsewhere, Carmen meets Sylphie in a bunker, and the two become effective combat partners despite their limited communication. They defeat a Viscount of Blood and obtain the rune Jake needs to open the Count's chamber through his shared storage with Sylphie. The Count proves intelligent, mobile, and highly regenerative. After a prolonged fight, Jake pursues it into the tower atrium, prevents it from healing on other participants, and kills it publicly. He gains levels, valuable vampire remains, and one of the nine Keys of Blood. A Court of Shadows thief steals part of the chamber's loot, but Jake tracks him down, recovers the items, and forces him to leave the hunt. Caleb accepts his subordinate's loss rather than escalating the dispute. Jake then examines a cursed puzzle guarding another treasury. Reika, the Noboru Clan patriarch's great-granddaughter, recognizes a flaw in his model and joins him. Their practical and theoretical approaches complement each other, allowing them to solve the puzzle and open the hidden armory.
Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)
The opened armory belonged to Yalsten's Pure Ones, inhabitants who resisted vampirism. Jake and Reika divide its anti-vampire weapons and crafting resources before joining the wider race for keys. Jake obtains the Root of Yalsten's Eternal Resentment from a manifestation of the realm's curse, giving him a powerful one-use weapon against vampires and protection from the surrounding mist. Jake kills two more Counts and combines three of their weapons into a transforming blade. Carmen, Sylphie, and Miranda join Valhal fighters against another Count; Carmen sacrifices an arm to cripple it, and Sylphie takes the kill. Meanwhile, the Holy Church and Noboru Clan cooperate to secure the final keys. Jacob hires Aaron, a fighter with extreme conscious regeneration, to delay Jake. Jake repeatedly destroys Aaron's body but cannot kill him, so he traps him long enough to breach the Church's barrier. He arrives too late: the last Count is already dead, though the Church leaves compensation. All nine keys are now assembled. The Noboru Clan has won the agreed key competition, while Jake has accumulated more Count loot. With more than a week remaining inside the event, the Treasure Hunt is ready to enter its second phase.
Story so far - through chapter 34 (this book)
Jake and Aaron exchange knowledge after their clash. Aaron admits that his regeneration requires conscious control and teaches Jake about directing vital energy, but abruptly leaves after examining Jake's soul-bound mask. At the Mistless Plains, the nine keyholders activate linked altars. A crystalline spire rises and absorbs the curse instead of destroying it, reopening Yalsten's sealed vaults while revealing that something powerful sleeps inside. The factions scatter to claim the new rewards. Casper enters a floating vault for the Risen, while Jake forces entry into a tree-shaped Nalkar vault. An old projection recognizes his connection to the Malefic Order and grants him mental-magic relics, an alchemy token, and a powerful vampire heart. This establishes an unexplained link between Jake's patron and Yalsten's vampire past. Jake later joins several independent fighters at a buried cube vault. The cube traps them in a hidden space, but Jake, an elemental mage, and a Court of Shadows assassin solve it after nearly a day. The group receives several exceptional rewards. As soon as the treasure appears, more than one hundred attackers surround the valley, and one of Jake's temporary companions reveals his part in the ambush.
Story so far - through chapter 46 (this book)
The independent coalition tries to force Jake out of the hunt. Jake kills many attackers with his gaze, defeats their city-lord leader, and accepts compensation from the survivors rather than pursuing a wider political conflict. He divides the cube rewards with his companions; Roman receives an elemental staff, Felicia receives a protective spatial ring, and Jake keeps a legendary shared-storage safe. Jake clears more vaults and nearly dies in one filled with magically compressed water. By learning to circulate the surrounding water mana, he restores his movement and spellcasting, kills the vault's eel lord, and upgrades his defensive scales. Elsewhere, Miranda and Sultan trap Aaron inside a competitive maze, while factional raiding intensifies. The Sword Saint attacks the Court of Shadows, killing fourteen members and forcing many more from the hunt, though Caleb escapes with most of its treasure. Casper completes a set of World Fragments needed to form a quasi-core. He reveals that the Risen want Jake's curse root for an undead-favorable dungeon on Earth. When the fragments reach the central spire, Yalsten begins collapsing and a final quest orders the hunters to kill the awakened cursed monarch. Miranda and Arnold withdraw during the safe interval, while Jake, Sylphie, the Sword Saint, Caleb, Casper, Carmen, Reika, Priscilla, and major faction forces remain.
Story so far - through chapter 58 (this book)
The cursed monarch awakens with hundreds of soldiers and five royal guards. The Holy Church, the Risen, Haven, Valhal, the Court of Shadows, and the Noboru Clan combine rituals and elite fighters against them. Aaron joins as a nearly indestructible healer. Jake poisons the monarch while Carmen, Caleb, Casper, Sylphie, and the Sword Saint help break through his defenses. The monarch invokes Sanguine's blood legacy, purging his curse and becoming the level-170 Monarch of Blood. Blood elementals rise from the fallen. Carmen inflicts a severe wound but loses an arm and must withdraw. Casper also leaves after the monarch counters his strongest form. The Holy Church sacrifices fourteen ritualists to empower an ancient sword; Bertram spends his life using it to maim the monarch, with Jacob expecting to restore him later. A final blood-draining judgment kills or expels many remaining hunters. Jake and the Sword Saint gain the advantage in the last exchange. The monarch uses his remaining strength to teleport the Holy Church survivors away and destroys himself. Jake receives the kill. Sanguine's blood legacy remains as a divine necklace, with the defeated monarch bound to it as a guide. Jake and the Sword Saint agree to settle ownership through their long-awaited duel.
Story so far - through chapter 67 (this book)
After the monarch's defeat, Carmen helps Jake refine his physical boost into Limit Shatter. Jake also fuses all nine Count weapons into an ancient Chimera weapon, though he cannot wield it before level 150. As Yalsten's remaining time runs out, Jake and the Sword Saint begin their duel for Sanguine's blood legacy. The Sword Saint is revealed as Miyamoto. Jake's superior attributes and archery win the opening phase, but Miyamoto revisits a wartime survival memory and manifests Springtime Advent. The transformation makes him young again and grants overwhelming rain-based power. Under that pressure, Jake integrates his arcane energy with his body, eventually developing Arcane Awakening. He poisons and badly wounds Miyamoto, severing one arm, but both refuse to stop as the realm collapses. The shrinking battlefield forces every observer to withdraw. Jake loses part of a leg but continues fighting, first with an improvised support and then unarmed. In the final seconds, Jake recovers his bow as Miyamoto retrieves his sword. Jake fires while Miyamoto strikes, and the Treasure Hunt ends during their clash. The result is not yet known at this point.
Story so far - through chapter 71 (this book)
Jake returns to Haven healed but carrying a bow cut in two. From the damage and timing, he concludes Miyamoto's sword reached his neck just before his arrow would have landed, making the duel a narrow loss. Miyamoto keeps Sanguine's blood legacy but pays heavily for Springtime Advent, returning physically diminished and needing to rebuild lost levels. Jake receives the Premier Treasure Hunter title for his performance and empties an enormous collection of loot from his insignia. Villy explains that Miyamoto's transformation was a transcendence, a self-created power outside ordinary System limits. Jake accepts that his own melee fighting lacks learned technique and decides to develop a short-weapon style that better complements his poison and arcane magic. Villy also confirms that the King of the Forest died, but a new and unresponsive lifeform linked to it now resides in Jake's mask. Haven prepares for an auction one week away. Miranda screens prospective residents, and Sultan becomes a likely broker for Haven and Jake. Sylphie leaves to train independently. Neil gives Jake teleportation research and a compass, then sends him closer to his family. After defeating creatures at his arrival point, Jake begins the remaining journey overland.
How does it end? (ending)
Yalsten collapses after the Monarch of Blood destroys himself, leaving Sanguine's blood legacy and a bound projection able to guide its future holder. Jake and Miyamoto duel for the legacy. Miyamoto reaches a costly transcendent state through Springtime Advent and wins the final exchange by a fraction, though both fighters would probably have died without the Treasure Hunt ending. Miyamoto keeps the legacy and returns greatly weakened, while Jake accepts the loss and resolves to improve his melee technique. The survivors return to Earth fully restored from their event injuries. Carmen and Casper have withdrawn safely, Sylphie later departs Haven to pursue independent growth, and Miranda turns to screening new residents and organizing auction goods. Sultan becomes a prospective broker for Haven and Jake, and Neil continues work on long-range teleportation. Jake holds the Premier Treasure Hunter title and extensive treasure, including the charged curse root and a level-locked Chimera weapon. His mask contains an unresponsive new lifeform tied to the dead King of the Forest. With the auction one week away, Neil teleports Jake closer to his family, and Jake begins the remaining journey overland.
