In short (whole book)
Jake divides his time between the Malefic Viper's Order and a changing Earth. The Second World Congress elects no leader, while the restored Fallen King asks to be judged as a future candidate. Jake helps Carmen cross continents, destroy a slave operation, and confront the abusive Salvento family, most of whom she kills while freeing her mother. After defeating a C-grade Phantomshade Panther, Jake enters the Seat of the Exalted Prima and observes an alternate life. He preserves that parallel self, Sim Jake, within his soul space and gains a possible route to become an administrator of the Seat. He also encounters a rival Chosen whose bloodline manipulates trust. Back at the Order, Jake studies alchemy, formations, and melee combat, supports his elf steward's training, and recruits Reika and Bastilla for an expedition with Irin and a Viper-blessed dragonkin. The book ends as the five enter the Nine Floors of the Indigo Caverns and find mushrooms covering the first floor.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Jake Thayne became a hunter, alchemist, and the Malefic Viper's Chosen after Earth entered the wider multiverse. He founded Haven but left much of its daily leadership to Miranda, preferring personal advancement and difficult hunts to political rule. Sylphie, his hawk companion, shares a union oath with him and has developed into a powerful combatant. Jake remains connected to figures across Earth's major factions, including his brother Caleb, Holy Church leader Jacob, Risen curse expert Casper, inventor Arnold, merchant Sultan, and the Sword Saint. Reika of the Noboru Clan is studying alchemy within the Malefic Viper's Order.
Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)
Jake expands his poison craft at the Order and attends a gathering for promising students from Earth's universe. He befriends a Viper-blessed dragonkin, rejects attempts to recruit him, and loses control of a secret when an Ember Flight dragon publicly identifies him as a bloodline bearer. His status as Villy's Chosen remains concealed, but outside factions now have a stronger reason to pursue him. On Earth, the Second World Congress is disrupted by the Fallen King, a unique lifeform who arrives with enough voting power to dominate the election. He proposes a settlement where humans and sapient beasts can coexist and offers himself as world leader, while acknowledging a hidden connection to Jake. Rather than force a decision, he asks the delegates to judge his rule over time. Jake and Miranda insist that Haven remain neutral and independent. Caleb warns that temporary compromises will not protect smaller factions if one power later dominates Earth and its wider territory. The delegates deliberately prevent any candidate from winning, leaving Earth without a leader after the first vote.
Story so far - through chapter 17 (this book)
The Congress selects Paths of the Unusual Unions for Earth's coming path event. Jake then tells Miranda that he restored the Fallen King from the King of the Forest's soul fragment and admits that his cursed crafting caused the Great Famine. Miranda makes clear that his secrecy exposed Haven to political danger, and Jake agrees to resume regular briefings. A new quest announces the Seat of the Exalted Prima, which requires a key assembled from three fragments. Meanwhile, Jacob privately warns Casper that the Holy Church may use propaganda, infiltration, assassination, or war to drive the Risen from Earth. At the Order, Jake trades relics from a hidden Nalkar world for rare hemotoxic materials and an upgrade to his soulbound necklace. Ruby Lake transforms it into the legendary Heart of the Alchemist and completes her own evolutionary quest. Jake then spends more than two months in laboratory seclusion, develops stronger blood-damaging poisons, raises his profession substantially, and gains Advanced Core Manipulation. When Carmen reports a lead on her missing family, Jake ends his seclusion and prepares to return to Earth with a new inter-universal travel route.
Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)
During Jake's return to Earth, a many-eyed void entity intercepts him and leaves a dangerous black cube intended for Arnold. Arnold perceives its influence as patterns rather than eyes, safely contains it, and gives Jake a map for the journey to Carmen. In Ambermill, Carmen uncovers a false recruitment program that enslaves vulnerable residents. She destroys its local operators with Jake and Sylphie's help, while Sultan frees the victims and admits he helped steer Carmen toward the scheme to remove a commercial rival. The three companions then hunt Primas for new event keys. They defeat an Earth Elemental Prima, survive its attempt to bury them inside a collapsing mountain, and escape through a drill formed from Jake's alchemical flame and Sylphie's wind. Inside the Grand Mangrove River, Jake develops curved arrows while hunting another Prima. A C-grade frog nearly kills the group, but a far stronger white snake intervenes after recognizing Jake's connection to the Malefic Viper. Jake reveals that he is Villy's Chosen, and Villy blesses the snake through him. The snake and five other C-grades escort the party safely across the river, allowing the search for Carmen's family to continue from Changlun.
Story so far - through chapter 39 (this book)
Changlun's water-aligned allies transport Jake, Carmen, and Sylphie across the ocean. At Puddle Rock, Peter helps trace Carmen's relatives to Paradise, and an old wand confirms that Carmen's father is inside the concealed city. Paradise's leader, Renato, agrees not to obstruct Carmen if Jake warns him before violence. Peter, meanwhile, is secretly gathering leverage for the United Cities Alliance, though his operation is not directed against Jake or Carmen. Carmen reveals that the Salventos abused her for years, that Beatrice's assault led to Carmen's violent retaliation, and that the family then arranged her imprisonment. Her parents believed she was dead. At the family mansion, Carmen's mother welcomes her, but the Salventos try to confine and exploit them. Beatrice's partner uses demonic contracts and transformed prisoners as weapons. Jake kills attacking guards, Carmen defeats the warlock, and Renato supports them rather than defend the family. Carmen then kills Beatrice and more than twenty other Salventos who participated in her abuse. She spares her father only at her mother's request and leaves him to Paradise's judgment. Carmen secures her mother's freedom, ends her ties to the family, and begins a casual, nonexclusive relationship with Jake.
Story so far - through chapter 49 (this book)
Carmen remains in Paradise to arrange protection and transport for her mother, while Jake hunts alone before the Seat event. Casper completes an intermediate dungeon with support from the Risen, gaining the ability to create low-tier C-grade monsters. In the jungle, Jake selects the basic Stealth Attack skill and develops it through experimentation, extending its effect to magical archery and preserving it briefly after a target notices an attack. He then challenges a level 204 C-grade Phantomshade Panther. The apparent first kill proves to be only one of several linked clones, each death strengthening the survivors. Jake loses wings, an arm, and eventually his sight while using stealth, poison, marks, and spatial movement to isolate them. He survives a collapsing spatial attack through an improved movement skill and finally kills the last body with Eternal Hunger after poisoning it at close range. The victory raises both his class and race, while One Step Mile becomes the legendary One Step, Thousand Miles. Still recovering, Jake opens his completed key. He joins Carmen, Sylphie, Miranda, Arnold, Sultan, and other Earth entrants as the universe-wide Seat of the Exalted Prima begins its one-week opening.
Story so far - through chapter 58 (this book)
The Seat gathers keyholders, surviving Primas, and visitors from many worlds under a strict ban on violence. Jake enters the Path of Myriad Choices, which offers simulations of lives shaped by different decisions. He chooses the branch where a childhood tantrum did not delay his parents, causing their fatal accident and preventing Caleb's birth. The alternate Jake grows up alone, embraces rather than suppresses his bloodline instincts, and becomes a mercenary and assassin before the system arrives. In the tutorial he follows Umbra, rejects professions, fights with paired katars, and develops exceptional melee skill. He also becomes aware that Jake is observing him, and the two establish limited communication. The system confirms that they are genuine parallels with identical true soul signatures, preventing them from living separately in the same universe. A soulbound inanimate vessel offers another route. The alternate spends his remaining event rewards to obtain the Bone of the Virtual Gap and temporary refuge in Jake's soul space. Jake reconstructs his fading records around the bone. Some are lost, but Sim Jake survives as a distinct simulated presence, with an eventual consensual re-merger expected.
Story so far - through chapter 66 (this book)
Jake's event result places him among those who may administer the Milky Way Seat. Sim Jake shapes his soulbound bone into a katar and proposes teaching Jake a perception-led melee style. On the Administrator's Terrace, an alien bloodline bearer manipulates Jake's trust and draws out information about his levels and status as the Malefic Viper's Chosen. Jake breaks the influence before revealing his own bloodline. Villy later identifies the stranger as the Chosen of a rival primordial and expects him to work indirectly. Jake gives Casper the Root of Eternal Resentment, then returns to the Order. Villy explains that Sim Jake came from a true parallel-world simulation and considers their gradual, consensual merger reasonably safe. Jake begins formation work, alchemical study, and melee training in his soul space. Duskleaf leaves a capable clone to instruct both Jake and his elf steward. The steward studies core refinement and learns to withstand powerful presences in preparation for a future Bee Queen ritual. Over several weeks, Sim Jake trains Jake to read an opponent's momentum and counter without overextending. Elsewhere, the rival Chosen prepares an Earth operation involving contracted humans and an ash-and-flame unique lifeform.
Story so far - through chapter 71 (this book)
At the Order's student orientation, Jake learns that Viper-blessed students can claim automatic membership and discovers that he has effectively already been registered. The friendly malefic dragonkin invites him on an alchemy-focused dungeon expedition. A separate misunderstanding has led senior figures to believe Jake wants help propagating his bloodline, but Villy agrees to stop the plan while warning that the involved witches may still act independently. Jake recruits Reika, whose studies at the Order are progressing, and she brings her beastfolk roommate Bastilla as the second required alchemist. Irin completes the five-person party. The Nine Floors of the Indigo Caverns requires exactly five D-grade entrants. Each floor contains guarded materials that must be crafted into the means of opening the next, with an optional weak C-grade boss after the ninth floor. The dungeon normally takes weeks and collapses after four. Jake, the malefic dragonkin, Irin, Reika, and Bastilla travel through a mana-dense cavern and enter successfully. All five are alive and committed to the expedition when the book ends. Their first immediate obstacle is not combat but the sight of a first floor filled with mushrooms, which Jake strongly dislikes.
How does it end? (ending)
Earth still has no world leader, and the Fallen King's human-beast settlement remains under observation. Miranda knows Jake caused the Great Famine, while the wider world does not. Carmen has found her family, killed the relatives responsible for her abuse, and secured her mother's freedom. The Holy Church's possible campaign against the Risen remains unresolved. Jake has killed a C-grade Phantomshade Panther, kept the Seat of the Exalted Prima within reach, and become a possible administrator for its Milky Way branch. Sim Jake survives through a soulbound bone in Jake's soul space and is training him in a counter-focused melee style, though their records are gradually merging. A rival primordial's Chosen has identified Jake and is preparing an indirect operation on Earth. At the Order, Jake continues his studies and helps his elf steward gain skill and independence. The final scene leaves Jake, the malefic dragonkin, Irin, Reika, and Bastilla alive inside the Nine Floors of the Indigo Caverns, facing a mushroom-filled first floor.
