The eldest Baudelaire, a fourteen-year-old inventor who ties back her hair with a ribbon when she concentrates and builds clever devices from odd materials. After the fire that killed her parents and a narrow escape from the greedy Count Olaf, she is the resourceful eldest guardian of her younger siblings as they are moved to a new home.

The bespectacled middle Baudelaire, twelve years old, who reads constantly and retains almost everything he learns. His knowledge repeatedly helps the children survive. Having already outwitted Count Olaf once, he remains watchful for the villain's return and devoted to protecting his sisters.

The infant Baudelaire, who communicates in short exclamations her siblings interpret and whose four large, sharp teeth let her bite through almost anything. Small but brave, she does her part to help her brother and sister in the family's continuing troubles.

The cruel, fortune-hungry actor who was the children's first guardian and tried to steal their inheritance before being exposed and fleeing. Recognizable by his single long eyebrow and the eye tattooed on his ankle, he is a skilled disguiser who has sworn to pursue the Baudelaires until he gets their money, and the children fear he may reappear at any time.

The chronically coughing banker at Mulctuary Money Management who manages the Baudelaire fortune and keeps arranging where the orphans will live. Well-meaning but obtuse, he trusts appearances far too easily and is slow to believe the children when they warn him of danger.

A cheerful, world-renowned herpetologist and a distant relative who becomes the children's new guardian. He keeps an enormous collection of snakes and reptiles in a glass-walled Reptile Room and is planning a scientific expedition to Peru. Warm, generous, and delighted to have the children, he treats them with the kindness they have been missing and makes them feel truly welcome.

First appears in chapter 3

A menacing, shabbily disguised man who arrives to work as Uncle Monty's new laboratory assistant, replacing a previous helper. Rude to the children, oddly greedy, and far too interested in Monty's plans, possessions, and travel arrangements, he alarms the Baudelaires the moment he appears in the household.
