In short (whole book)

During an expedition outside Deepwell, Ruwen develops his Worker abilities, trains with Sift, and turns the Black Pyramid into a refuge shared with Hamma. He learns cultivation, becomes an Inkwarden, and permanently retains Worker and Observer powers loaned by Uru's class artifacts. His uncontrolled harvesting then kills the camp dungeon's creatures and strips away its spirit. Seeking restitution, he bonds with its surviving keeper, Fractal, and accepts responsibility for rebuilding it. Sift's amnesiac former partner regains her memories and reveals that her suspicious conduct served Kai's counteroperation against Naktos. Tremine destroys that victory by betraying the group for a valuable survey and helping a Naktos mage cast them into the spirit realm. With ordinary abilities inaccessible, Ruwen, Hamma, Sift, the restored shade, and a resurrected assassin bound to Ruwen head toward the Iris in search of a portal home, while Slib and House Captain Juva disappear into the tunnels.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Ruwen Starfield became a young Worker champion of Uru in Deepwell. His position places him within the conflict between Uru and her hostile brother Naktos. Ruwen's parents remain missing, leaving him with an unanswered personal search alongside his duties as a champion. Hamma, an Order healer, and Sift, a skilled fighter and martial instructor, are his principal companions. Kai is the powerful mistress of the sentient Black Pyramid, an important refuge tied to Ruwen and his allies. Slib Strongspell remains hostile toward Ruwen. As the new expedition begins, Ruwen carries unusual abilities, dangerous secrets, and obligations that extend beyond the ordinary life of a newly ascended Worker.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

Ruwen and Hamma save Sift after masked attackers strike him with three poisoned crossbow bolts. Ruwen privately suspects Slib's mother directed the ambush, but he lacks proof and conceals the accusation from the authorities. At the Workers' Lodge, Hamma confronts Ruwen and Sift about their false appearances and unexplained abilities. She accepts temporary secrecy only if Ruwen does not lie to her. Big D welcomes Ruwen into the Worker expedition and assigns Bliz to prepare him. Bliz teaches him advanced Voidband control, lends him powerful energy rings, and entrusts him with sealed class supplies. With Whip and Quip assigned as bodyguards, Ruwen helps a warehouse team load more than thirty thousand pounds into his band. The experience changes his view of Workers and their skills. Before leaving Deepwell, Bliz reveals unexplained gate runes hidden in his own Voidband, and Ruwen agrees to discover where they lead.

Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)

The expedition reaches Khan's Crossing and establishes camp near the mine and dungeon. Ruwen and Sift secretly use a tent portal to enter the Black Pyramid, where accelerated time gives Sift several days to improve Ruwen's combat skills. Kai warns that agents connected to Naktos may be active in Uru's territory, authorizes Hamma to enter the Pyramid with the pair, and gives Ruwen safer gate runes. Tremine remains near camp while Kai investigates. Sift explains that blocked meridians force him to fortify his body inefficiently, though his strengthened heart helped him survive the crossbow ambush. While restoring the Pyramid's library, Ruwen consults Tremine about the five symbols seen in Bliz's Voidband. Tremine identifies them as gate runes whose parts specify a planet, coordinates, and a realm, but he doubts mortals can freely reach divine realms. His sudden recognition of Bliz leaves the runes' origin and destination unresolved.

Story so far - through chapter 19 (this book)

The expedition reaches Khan's Crossing, where Ruwen unloads the supplies and sees experienced Workers establish the camp. He and Sift secretly enter the Black Pyramid for accelerated combat training. Kai warns that agents of Naktos are operating inside Uru's lands, gives Ruwen safer gate runes, and permits Hamma to enter with them. Tremine explains that the symbols from Bliz's Voidband form a destination and may point toward Uru's divine realm, though their purpose is unknown. He also identifies Ruwen's locked Worker book as a cultivation manual connected to twelve meridians. Ruwen tells him that Grey Canyon may hold a clue to his missing parents. After dangerous training and a Black Pyramid lake quest, Ruwen gains useful equipment and improves his combat and alchemy skills. On returning, however, he finds the camp portal destroyed and exits into the forest without Sift. Both survive separate encounters and return, but Big D concludes that the burned tent was probably another attempt on their lives.

Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)

The expedition visits Deepwell's tyrium mine, where Ruwen sees Workers isolate the material required for rapid revival. Its gaseous form resembles the spirit held in his center, suggesting a connection he cannot yet confirm. Big D uses the tour to demonstrate the importance of Workers and briefly hints that she may see beyond Ruwen's public identity. Back at camp, Hamma confirms that Kai has granted her restricted access to the Black Pyramid. She enters with Ruwen and Sift and helps restore Uru's chapel, while Ruwen advances his library duties. Blapy fully repairs the chapel, provides private quarters, and reshapes the practice area into a mountain-like combat facility. Sift takes charge of its reopened sparring rings and continues Ruwen's Bamboo Viper training. By the end of their stay, the chapel, library, living quarters, and training spaces make the Pyramid a secure refuge and useful base for all three companions.

Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)

Ruwen studies the Black Pyramid's rules and learns that its creatures live under a regulated cycle rather than serving only as disposable opponents. In a room whose design matches his locked Worker book, he experiments with Harden and the spirit in his center. The attempt violates a Pyramid rule and nearly kills him. At his request, Blapy creates an isolated cultivation space where accidental harvesting will not threaten others. Ruwen opens the book, discovers that his twelve meridians are at lead level, and learns introductory poses and breathing methods for harvesting and fortification. He manages a small amount of controlled progress but still lacks enough spirit to advance far. Sift explains some of the risks cultivation poses to ascended people. As the trio prepares for deeper exploration, Hamma outlines her defensive Order abilities. Ruwen and Sift then disclose their hidden combat roles: Ruwen has an unusual mixture of powers, while Sift is an unascended cultivator concealed behind a false Fighter appearance. Sift recognizes Hamma's part in saving him and swears her a soul debt.

Story so far - through chapter 36 (this book)

At the tyrium mine, Ruwen learns that the church controls the substance because it enables rapid revival. Big D emphasizes the value of Workers and hints that she recognizes his concealed abilities. Back at camp, Hamma confirms her restricted Black Pyramid access. Ruwen, Hamma, and Sift enter together, restore Uru's chapel, and reopen parts of the library and training facilities. Ruwen begins cultivation after connecting his locked book to Blapy's mark. A dangerous attempt to draw ambient energy nearly kills him, so Blapy provides an isolated place for further practice. He learns the cultivation poses and breathing methods and starts strengthening his meridians. Before the trio descends together, Hamma learns that Sift is an unascended cultivator hidden behind a false Fighter appearance, and Sift swears her a soul debt for saving him. On the fifth level, the party solves a timed maze through prime-number clues and defeats its gem leopard guardian. Their rewards greatly improve Hamma's healing efficiency and give Ruwen a bracer that accelerates cultivation while making the practice more hazardous. They choose to continue to level six.

Story so far - through chapter 42 (this book)

Ruwen, Hamma, and Sift enter the Black Pyramid's fifth level as a formal party. They solve a timed maze by recognizing prime-number clues, survive traps and stone creatures, and defeat a gem leopard guarding their rewards. Hamma gains equipment that sharply improves her healing efficiency, while Ruwen binds a bracer that accelerates cultivation practice at the cost of dangerous suffocation. The trio proceeds to the sixth level, where they must obtain goblin leader hats without using excessive blood and then defeat the upper king. Ruwen uses translation, traps, improvised Voidband ammunition, and Worker abilities to help clear the defenders. The king proves to be a powerful mistwraith protected by an energy shield and debilitating auras. Hamma removes the party's conditions with prayer, Ruwen breaks the shield with repeated projectiles, and the companions combine their remaining attacks to destroy the wraith. The victory leaves Ruwen beneath its falling body, with the immediate rewards still unresolved.

Story so far - through chapter 50 (this book)

Hamma saves Ruwen after the mistwraith falls and receives major upgrades to her healing resources. Blapy names Ruwen, Hamma, and Sift custodians, granting them unrestricted access to her levels. Ruwen completes the library work needed to become Inkwarden and soul-binds a sentient Bookworm talisman that can inspect his memories and index vast amounts of knowledge. At camp, Big D distributes divine class necklaces for mixed-party training. The Worker artifact temporarily gives Ruwen every Worker ability through level five, helping him guide a hostile and inexperienced party through the dungeon. After returning it, he discovers that the granted Worker powers remain. Testing the Observer necklace produces the same permanent result, although other class powers stay inaccessible. Sift then reports that his former partner has returned as a shade without memories of him. Ruwen admits that he possesses a ring able to restore those memories. Hurt that Ruwen withheld it, Sift leaves, and Ruwen departs camp alone to continue cultivation.

Story so far - through chapter 57 (this book)

Ruwen attempts to harvest spirit near the camp dungeon and loses control. He draws energy from the entire complex, experiences its creatures dying, and believes he may also have killed the governing intelligence. The Bookworm confirms that removing so much spirit prevents a quick recovery. Ruwen nevertheless uses the immense reserve to advance every meridian to copper, making his body much more durable, then resolves to repair the harm. Sift returns after failing to track the shade, and the three companions find her meeting the concealed Naktos assassin who attacked Ruwen on Ascension Day. She denies remembering Sift and says her actions concern Kai. The assassin attacks, reveals that Naktos plans to invade Uru's territory, and tries to suffocate the group before taking Ruwen for spirit-realm imprisonment. Ruwen survives long enough to trap him inside the Voidband and lets him die rather than pay the energy needed to sustain him. With the immediate threat ended, Ruwen, Hamma, and Sift secretly return to the damaged dungeon to seek its surviving keeper.

Story so far - through chapter 62 (this book)

The dungeon's crystal keeper survives and asks Ruwen for power, protection, and a pledge. Ruwen supplies blood moss and a creature-control gem, then accepts a soul oath to become master of the fragile tier-forty dungeon. He names the keeper Fractal and takes responsibility for rebuilding what he damaged. The shade arrives with Slib and House Captain Juva as prisoners. Her recovered memory ring has restored her love and trust for Sift, and she explains that her apparent dealings with Naktos were part of Kai's operation. Tremine then immobilizes the entire group and signals the waiting Naktos mage. He admits that his mentorship concealed a plan to exchange Ruwen for a valuable survey and that he helped deliver Uru's earlier champions. Naktos' Embrace sends Ruwen, Hamma, Sift, the shade, Slib, and Juva into the spirit realm. Slib and Juva flee. With normal profiles and abilities inaccessible, Rami directs the remaining party toward the Iris, where portal chalk may work. Fractal restores the dead assassin as Ruwen's compelled ally, and the group sets out toward its only known route home.

How does it end? (ending)

Tremine betrays Ruwen's group for a payment from Naktos, admits his part in the loss of earlier champions, and helps the Naktos mage send everyone into the spirit realm. Ruwen awakens there with Hamma, Sift, the restored shade, Slib, and House Captain Juva. Their profiles and most abilities are unavailable, while Slib and Juva flee into the tunnels. Rami identifies the Iris to the south as the only known nearby place where portal chalk can work. Fractal restores the dead Naktos assassin in body and spirit, and the assassin must obey Ruwen as dungeon master. Ruwen leads his core party and this compelled ally toward the Iris. Tremine remains at large, Naktos's planned invasion remains active, and Uru's knowledge of the sacrificed champions is unconfirmed. Ruwen must also fulfill his soul oath to restore Fractal's damaged dungeon, reckon with the danger of his cultivation, and continue the search for his missing parents.
