At Shawshank prison, contraband supplier Red befriends Andy Dufresne, a banker serving life for two murders he says he did not commit. Andy survives assault, builds a respected prison library and becomes indispensable to guards who need financial help. Warden Samuel Norton forces him to conceal corrupt income. When prisoner Tommy Williams brings evidence identifying another killer, Norton suppresses it to keep Andy under his control. For years Andy has also asked Red for small items, including a rock hammer and posters. He uses the hammer to dig through his cell wall, hides the tunnel behind the posters and escapes through a sewer. He takes Norton's hidden money under a false identity and exposes the corruption. After parole, Red finds cash and an invitation Andy left for him in Maine. He violates parole and heads toward Mexico, sustained by the hope of seeing his friend again.

Ellis Redding, known as Red, is serving a long sentence at Shawshank and has built a reputation for obtaining forbidden goods. He becomes interested in Andy Dufresne, a former banker convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. Andy insists he is innocent and carries himself with unusual reserve. He asks Red for a small rock hammer and later for pinup posters. During his early years he is repeatedly assaulted by Bogs Diamond and the Sisters, but his banking knowledge eventually gives him protection: he advises guard captain Byron Hadley and begins handling financial matters for prison staff. Andy also works in the library, secures funds and books, and turns it into a valuable institution. Under Warden Samuel Norton, his skills acquire a darker purpose. Norton profits from prison labor and compels Andy to maintain the hidden accounts behind a fictitious identity. A younger inmate, Tommy Williams, later reports that a former cellmate named Elmo Blatch confessed to the murders attributed to Andy. Norton refuses to pursue evidence that could free the man managing his money and uses punishment and transfer to silence the matter. Andy appears to accept that legal rescue is closed, but eventually vanishes from a locked cell. He has spent years cutting a tunnel through the wall with the rock hammer and concealing it behind his posters. After crawling through a sewer to freedom, he assumes control of Norton's secret funds and sends evidence of the corruption to a newspaper, destroying the warden's position. Red receives a postcard suggesting Andy reached the border. When Red is finally paroled, freedom feels alien after decades of institutional life. He follows directions Andy once gave him, finds money and a letter hidden in a Maine field, and chooses to break parole and travel to Zihuatanejo. The story closes with Red moving toward the friend who taught him that hope can be worth the risk.

Andy escapes through a tunnel he excavated behind successive pinup posters, then crawls through a prison sewer and disappears. Using the false identity under which he had helped Warden Norton hide corrupt income, he withdraws the accumulated money and sends records of the scheme to the press. The resulting scandal ends Norton's career and exposes Shawshank's abuses. Red later receives a blank postcard from a Texas border town, confirming that Andy is free. After Red is paroled, he struggles with the disorientation that comes from spending most of his adult life in prison. He follows Andy's old directions to a Maine field and finds money and a letter inviting him to join Andy in Zihuatanejo, Mexico. Red breaks parole and travels south. The narrative ends before their reunion, with Red choosing uncertainty and hope over the safe routines of confinement.
