The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner characters

By Stephenie Meyer

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Bree Tanner (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

The narrator, a teenage girl who was turned into a vampire only a few months earlier and now lives among a large, violent group of newborn vampires in Seattle. Cautious, watchful, and eager simply to survive, she keeps to the edges of the chaotic pack, following the rules she is given without fully understanding what she has become or why. Behind her wariness she is thoughtful and quietly desperate for something like safety and friendship.

Diego (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A newborn vampire who has lasted a little longer than most of the others and carries himself with unusual calm and self-control. Friendly and level-headed where the rest are feral and reckless, he takes an interest in Bree and becomes the closest thing she has to a friend, drawing her into questioning the strange life they have been forced into.

Riley (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The handsome young vampire who commands the newborns, herding them indoors by day, organizing their nighttime hunts, and enforcing harsh rules with threats. He warns them of deadly dangers, including sunlight and a rival clan of enemies, and answers to an unseen master, a vampire the newborns almost never see. To Bree he is the frightening authority who controls their whole existence.

Fred (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A large, standoffish newborn with an unusual gift: he radiates a repellent effect that makes others feel sick and instinctively look away from him, so the pack leaves him alone. Solitary and self-possessed, he keeps his distance from the violence, and Bree learns that staying near him offers a strange kind of protection.

Raoul (Minor)

Appears from the start

The most brutal and dominant of the newborns, a swaggering bully who gathers a gang around him and delights in picking fights and destroying the weaker members of the pack. The others fear him, and Bree does her best to stay out of his path.
