After recovering from grave injuries, Honor Harrington returns to command aboard HMS Nike and becomes Admiral Sarnow's flag captain at Hancock Station. The People's Republic engineers frontier attacks to disperse Manticore's forces, while Manticore answers with a false withdrawal from Yeltsin and a hidden reinforcement. Haven commits to attacks at Yeltsin and Hancock. Sarnow's weaker Hancock force uses missile pods, deception, and mines to delay Admiral Chin until Admiral Danislav arrives, but Nike is crippled and Sarnow is gravely wounded. Honor assumes effective control, saves Nike and Cassandra, and refuses to let Pavel Young's unauthorized flight break the remaining formation. Haven's expected quick victory instead becomes a series of defeats. A conspiracy destroys the presidential palace, kills President Harris and the old government, and creates a Committee of Public Safety. Admiral Parnell is arrested for treason, while Parks approves Honor's command decision and sends Nike home with Young under arrest for cowardice and desertion.

Previously: Honor Harrington served the Royal Manticoran Navy through the Basilisk crisis and a later operation at Grayson. Her service left her carrying responsibility for severe losses, including the death of Admiral Courvosier, and she suffered grave injuries that required extensive reconstruction and therapy. She now has a cybernetic left eye. Nimitz is Honor's bonded treecat and empathic companion.

So far this book: Honor completes her recovery and accepts command of the new battlecruiser HMS Nike. Her executive officer is Michelle Henke, an old academy friend who understands both Honor's survivor guilt and the hidden history behind her academy fight. Nike is assigned to Hancock Station as the intended flagship of Admiral Mark Sarnow's new battlecruiser squadron. Hancock faces a growing Havenite presence at Seaford IX while also carrying responsibility for several vulnerable allies. The station leadership spreads some strength among those systems rather than concentrating it forward. Nike arrives with a fractured fusion-generator housing, leaving the ship at reduced power and requiring the repair base to open an armored compartment for a replacement. Captain Tankersley estimates fourteen weeks of work. Sarnow allows his existing flagship to leave as planned and decides to shift his staff aboard the immobilized Nike, giving Honor the immediate task of integrating a flag staff while her ship is repaired.

So far this book: Sarnow appoints Honor as his flag captain and tactical deputy, then begins turning an inexperienced collection of ships into a squadron. Early gunnery exercises expose serious coordination failures, but Sarnow treats them as shared problems and supports Honor's authority. Ernestine Corell helps organize the critiques. Tankersley explains his limited part in the Basilisk refit dispute, and Honor does not blame him. As Nike's repairs accelerate, he and Honor become regular sparring partners and begin dining together. Beyond Hancock, the frontier crisis deepens. A freighter is destroyed before a Grayson cruiser can intervene, a concealed Havenite cruiser destroys a light attack craft at Zanzibar, and another force strikes sensors at Zuckerman before withdrawing. Manticore still lacks conclusive attribution for every incident, but the pattern appears coordinated. Thomas Caparelli initially favors quiet reinforcement. Hamish Alexander warns that the raids may be intended to scatter Manticore's strength and leave its important positions exposed. The Admiralty accepts that war may be approaching and prepares warnings for frontier commanders.

So far this book: Sarnow forces Admiral Parks to stop excluding Honor from task-force conferences, although Parks still distrusts her judgment. The frontier attacks are revealed as deliberate People's Republic policy. President Harris gives Admiral Parnell authority to trigger the final escalation, while Haven prepares diplomatic cover for the conflict. The operation becomes open war. Admiral Edward Pierre's four battlecruisers are destroyed at Talbot, but other attacks succeed, including the loss of a Manticoran cruiser. Parks rejects Sarnow's proposal to concentrate near Seaford IX. He sends Hancock's wall-of-battle units to cover Yorick and Zanzibar, leaving Sarnow's lighter group to defend the station until Admiral Danislav can arrive. Sarnow and Honor prepare an asymmetric defense using upgraded missile pods, concealed communications, and fast minelayers, knowing they cannot win a prolonged engagement against capital ships. Elsewhere, Captain Helen Zilwicki commits five escorts against a stronger Havenite raiding force so her convoy can scatter. All five escorts are destroyed, but they inflict heavy losses and save the transports carrying her husband Anton and their daughter.

So far this book: Nike becomes the strongest gunnery ship in Sarnow's task group, and Honor demonstrates independent tactical command during an exercise. HMS Warlock then arrives under Captain Lord Pavel Young, the academy assailant who still blames Honor for his stalled career. Honor must receive him professionally despite his concealed desire for revenge. At the same time, Commander Ogilvy retrieves Operation Argus data showing that Hancock's main battle force has departed and prepares to carry the intelligence to Admiral Rollins. Inside the People's Republic, Cordelia Ransom and selected political contacts join a conspiracy that intends to use a disastrous war as the opening for revolution. The group includes an Internal Security informant who secretly serves the plotters. Meanwhile, Manticore develops its own strategic deception. Thomas Caparelli proposes leaking a false order that makes Yeltsin appear weak while its defenders remain in place. Hamish Alexander supports the plan and proposes adding four Home Fleet squadrons under his command. Michael Mayhew formally accepts the danger to Grayson, and the government authorizes the trap.

So far this book: Parnell accepts Manticore's planted evidence that Yeltsin has been weakened and orders his available force to attack earlier than planned. He keeps the Seaford force separate. The revolutionary conspiracy also moves from planning to action: Cordelia Ransom prepares selected CRU cells, and a strike team assassinates the head of Internal Security. At Seaford, Argus confirms that Hancock has lost its wall of battle. Admiral Chin warns that the intelligence may be a trap, but Admiral Rollins chooses to attack before reinforcements can arrive and sends Chin's faster squadron ahead. Near Yorick, Commander Tribeca detects a covert Havenite ship communicating with a concealed relay. Her discovery exposes the nature of the Argus surveillance network. Parks realizes that Sarnow's warning was correct and orders his dispersed forces to concentrate, but Hancock is already under threat. Sarnow detects roughly thirty-five Havenite capital ships with about seventy escorts while Danislav remains up to seventy-two hours away. He evacuates noncombatants, lays a minefield, and begins a low-signature maneuver intended to deliver a concealed opening strike.

So far this book: Sarnow's force ambushes Admiral Chin with pod-launched missiles and electronic warfare, destroying major ships before decoys draw the pursuers away from Hancock's repair base. Chin identifies the deception and continues after him, but a pre-laid minefield inflicts further losses. Manticoran ships are destroyed in the delaying action, including HMS Crusader, whose loss kills Commodore Van Slyke and leaves Pavel Young commanding the heavy cruisers. Admiral Danislav arrives with dreadnoughts in time to cut off Chin, and Rollins turns away from the base. A missile strike cripples Nike, destroys its command center, and gravely wounds Sarnow. Honor retains effective control because the nominal senior captain lacks the information and communications needed to command. Young orders an unauthorized retreat and refuses Honor's order to return, but four of his cruisers rejoin her. Honor uses electronic warfare to cover the escape of Nike and Cassandra. Parks later approves her decision, arrests Young, and recommends a court-martial for cowardice and desertion. The defeats at Hancock, Seaford, and Yeltsin accompany a coup in Haven. Assault shuttles destroy the presidential palace, killing President Harris and the old central government. A Committee of Public Safety takes power and arrests Parnell for treason. Nike begins the journey to Manticore for months of repairs with Young under arrest aboard her.

Haven's offensive fails at its decisive points. Parnell returns from the disastrous Yeltsin operation to find President Harris, the cabinet, and the leading legislaturalist families dead after the palace attack. The People's Quorum establishes a Committee of Public Safety under emergency powers, and the new authorities arrest Parnell for treason. Rollins has also been defeated after the Hancock operation. At Hancock, Admiral Danislav's arrival closes the trap on Chin's pursuit, but the defense costs more than twelve thousand lives. HMS Nike is badly damaged, Admiral Sarnow survives with grave wounds, and his later recovery is unknown. Parks endorses Honor's decision to retain effective control when a formal transfer would have left the survivors without usable command information. He removes Pavel Young from command and recommends his court-martial for cowardice and desertion after Warlock abandons the formation. Honor departs for Manticore aboard Nike, carrying Young under arrest. Her fitness for command has been demonstrated, but Nike faces months of repair, her next assignment is unsettled, the future of her relationship with Tankersley is not recorded, and the wider war continues under Haven's new regime.
