The Siege of Macindaw recap

Keren holds Castle Macindaw, Alyss and the northern gateway into Araluen, while Will has escaped with the poisoned Orman and Xander to Malcolm's refuge. With no army available in time, Will builds one from unlikely pieces: Horace, Malcolm's community and Gundar Hardstriker's Skandian crew. They combine reconnaissance, deception and Malcolm's theatrical version of sorcery with a physical assault through a hidden approach. Inside, Alyss struggles against Keren's blue gemstone, which he uses to extract information and weaken her will. Will's coalition enters the castle before Keren can deliver it to the Scotti. In the final confrontation Keren compels Alyss to shoot Will, but his mail prevents a fatal wound; her control is broken and Keren is defeated. Orman and Lord Syron recover under Malcolm's care, the invasion route is secured, and Will and Alyss acknowledge the love that their separation has made impossible to ignore.

Previously: Newly qualified as a Ranger, Will proved himself at Seacliff before being sent north in disguise to investigate reports of sorcery around Castle Macindaw. Lord Syron had fallen mysteriously ill, and suspicion centred on his unpopular son Orman. Will and the Courier Alyss discovered that the supposed sorcerer Malkallam was really Malcolm, a healer sheltering people driven from their homes by fear. Orman had been consulting him in secret to save Syron. The rumours were part of a conspiracy by Orman's popular cousin Keren, who poisoned the ruling family and intended to hand the border stronghold to Scotti invaders. Will escaped through a hidden route with the poisoned Orman and his secretary Xander. Alyss stayed behind to protect their cover and was captured when Keren seized Macindaw. Keren has a blue gemstone that can make Alyss dangerously suggestible. The castle and Alyss are still in his hands as this book begins.

Will reaches Malcolm's refuge with Orman and Xander. Malcolm can treat the poison but cannot promise a quick recovery, leaving Will as the only person able to respond immediately to Keren's coup. Macindaw is too strong for a lone Ranger to assault, and Keren's men control the district while expecting Scotti support. Inside the castle, Alyss hides what she can and studies her captor. Keren uses the blue gemstone to push past ordinary resistance, turning each interrogation into a threat to Will's plans as well as to Alyss herself. Will begins gathering information, routes and people rather than attempting a rescue that would fail at the walls.

Horace answers Will's call, giving the Ranger a trusted fighter who understands how he thinks. Together they examine Macindaw's defences and the forces available nearby. A conventional siege would take more men and time than they possess, so Will plans around surprise, hidden movement and division within the castle. Malcolm's reputation as Malkallam can be used deliberately: effects based on medicine, smoke and performance may frighten soldiers who already believe sorcery is loose in Norgate. The plan remains dangerous, but Will now has the beginnings of a force rather than a solitary rescue attempt.

Gundar Hardstriker and his Skandian crew join Will, repaying the respect and restraint shown during the Seacliff raid. Their arrival supplies experienced warriors without waiting for a distant Araluen army. Will, Horace and the Skandians practise working as a single group while Malcolm prepares frightening effects to unsettle Keren's garrison. Information connected to the Scotti confirms that the threat is larger than one ambitious noble: if Keren holds Macindaw long enough, the fortress can shelter an invading force and open the north. Alyss continues resisting inside, but Keren's control method makes delay increasingly dangerous.

Will's coalition commits to an assault built around Macindaw's overlooked approaches. Trobar's strength and knowledge of the area help with obstacles that stealth alone cannot solve, while Malcolm's staged sorcery is designed to pull attention away from the real entry. Horace will lead where armour and sword work are needed, and Gundar's crew can turn an opening into a foothold. The plan depends on timing: they must enter, find Alyss and break Keren's command before the Scotti arrive in strength. Every part is improvised, but each uses the particular skills of allies Keren did not expect Will to possess.

The assault begins. Malcolm's effects magnify the garrison's fear of Malkallam, creating confusion while Will's party uses the concealed route into Macindaw. Horace and the Skandians fight through organised resistance as Will concentrates on reaching Alyss and Keren. The attackers are badly outnumbered, but surprise and the defenders' uncertainty keep the castle from responding as one force. Inside, Alyss tries to preserve enough control to oppose Keren when the rescue reaches her, even after repeated exposure to the blue stone. Control of the fortress narrows to the struggle around Keren and his prisoner.

Will's mixed force captures Macindaw and prevents it becoming a Scotti base. At the climax Keren uses his gemstone to command Alyss to shoot Will. She struggles against the order but fires; the mail Will wears for the assault absorbs enough of the crossbow shot to save him. Keren's hold over Alyss is broken, and he is defeated as resistance in the castle collapses. Malcolm's medicine saves Orman and helps Lord Syron recover, exposing the illness as poison rather than sorcery and restoring lawful authority in Norgate. Gundar and his crew have repaid their debt, Horace has supplied the force Will lacked, and Malcolm's outcasts have helped save the people who feared them. Will and Alyss survive the separation and acknowledge their love for each other. The border is secure and the Macindaw conspiracy is ended.

Will's improvised force takes Macindaw before the Scotti can turn it into the gateway for an invasion. Malcolm's staged effects and the reputation of Malkallam spread confusion, while Horace, Gundar's Skandians and Trobar provide the strength needed to penetrate and fight through the fortress. Alyss resists Keren's gemstone as the final struggle reaches her. Keren compels her to fire a crossbow at Will, but the mail he wears for the assault prevents the shot from killing him. Keren's control is broken and he is defeated. The Scotti plan collapses with the castle restored to its lawful side. Malcolm's treatment saves Orman and begins to restore Lord Syron, clearing away the false story that sorcery had destroyed the family. Will and Alyss are reunited, and their relief finally brings their feelings for each other into the open. Will completes his first major mission as a full Ranger with both the northern border and his friends safe, closing the continuous Macindaw story begun in The Sorcerer in the North.
