The Silent Fleet characters

By J.N. Chaney, Terry Maggert

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Dash (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

The Messenger, pilot of the archetype, and leader of the forge alliance. Dash trains Amy for future duty aboard the Slipwing while directing the search for enough dark metal to complete Leira's combat mech.

Amy (Supporting)

Appears from the start

An intuitive engineer learning to become a combat pilot. Amy can recognize mechanical patterns that escape formal analysis, but her early Slipwing simulation shows that she still needs tactical training.

Leira (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Dash's former courier partner and the intended pilot of a new unseen combat mech. Leira prepares to operate the machine once the forge obtains enough dark metal to complete it.

Sentinel (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The unseen intelligence melded with Dash and the archetype. Sentinel assists with combat and analysis, and its warning that a recovered Golden missile may be a trap suggests a growing capacity for intuition.

Custodian (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The intelligence responsible for operating, securing, and fabricating within the forge. Custodian helps test a new dark-metal detector and assesses whether recovered material can complete Leira's mech.

Conover (Supporting)

Appears from the start

An analyst whose augmented vision helps him examine unfamiliar technology. Conover works with Custodian on the detector that reveals an unexpected source of dark metal near a brown dwarf.

The order scholar (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

A scholar from a small order that has studied unseen language and culture. He identifies an external repository that may preserve information still inaccessible within the forge.

Leira's meld AI (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

The unseen intelligence created to operate Leira's combat mech and eventually meld with her. Its deliberately challenging manner tests Leira's patience, and it insists upon a formal title.

Viktor (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

An engineer and Leira's longtime partner. Viktor supports the decision that Leira must remain at the forge to master her new mech while Amy pilots the Slipwing on the archive expedition.

Mining project manager (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 4

The leader of a frontier mining camp built near an indestructible pillar. She listens to Dash's account of the Golden threat and recognizes that the structure may be the unseen archive he seeks.

Mining operations manager (Minor)

First appears in chapter 4

The frontier camp's survey and mining specialist. He uses the operation's geological evidence to help identify the supposedly useless pillar as the likely site of an unseen archive.

Ragsdale (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 7

A forge security organizer who treats the arrival of new allies as a possible infiltration risk. Ragsdale calls for a screening process before the mining recruits receive wider access.

Freya (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 7

A food-production specialist whose advice also shapes operations. Freya argues that an unpredictable return to the hidden Golden station offers a better chance of learning its purpose.

Gentle Friends leader (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 10

The pragmatic commander of the Gentle Friends. After Dash and Leira disable his ships and demonstrate the archetype's power, he moves from defiance to negotiation and agrees to a meeting aboard the Snow Leopard.

Gentle Friends lieutenant (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 10

The second-in-command of the Gentle Friends and an adaptable negotiator. Outmatched by the unseen mechs after an interrupted ambush, he arranges direct contact between Dash and his commander.

Bright ruling council (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 14

Three physically identical representatives who speak for the Bright. They demand the forge's submission and offer forced transformation in service to the Golden, identifying themselves as part of a broader aligned power.

Privateer pilot (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 19

An experienced Gentle Friends pilot who takes the Slipwing's controls for a dangerous recovery within a brown dwarf's upper atmosphere. Amy supports the transfer because the maneuver demands greater flight experience.
