The One, the supreme creator in this mythology, who brings the world into being. From his thought arise the Ainur, angelic spirits whose great music shapes the design of the world before it is made.

The mightiest of the angelic Ainur, who turns from harmony to pride and rebellion, seeking to claim the world and bend it to his own will. He becomes the great dark power of the world, the first and greatest source of evil, whose malice drives much of the history that follows.

The chief of the Valar, the great powers who enter the world to order and tend it, and the appointed ruler on Iluvatar's behalf. Lord of air and wind, he is noble and far-seeing, and stands as the chief opponent of the rebel Morgoth among the powers of the West.

The most gifted of the Elves, a brilliant and proud craftsman whose skill surpasses all others. He creates the Silmarils, three jewels holding a sacred light, and his fierce pride and possessiveness over them set in motion much of the tragedy to come.

A high prince of the Elves, half-brother and rival to Feanor, renowned for his valor and nobility. He leads a great host of his people and stands as one of the mightiest and most steadfast of the Elven lords.

An Elven king who rules a hidden forest realm, one of the great lords of his people. Proud and powerful, he governs his secluded kingdom with his queen at his side.

A Maia, a spirit of great power and wisdom, who takes the form of a woman and becomes the queen of the Elven king Thingol. She weaves an unseen protection around their realm and is the mother of a peerless daughter.

The daughter of the Elven king Thingol and the Maia Melian, an Elf-maiden of unmatched beauty and grace, gifted with great power of song and enchantment. Her love for a mortal man sets in motion one of the central legends of the age.

A mortal Man, a hunted outlaw of great courage, who wanders into the hidden realm of the Elves and falls in love with Luthien. To win her hand he is set a seemingly impossible task, drawing him into peril against the dark power of the world.

A mortal Man of tragic destiny, brave and strong but proud and quick to anger, who is pursued through his life by a curse laid on his family by the dark enemy. His story is one of valor repeatedly undone by pride and ill fortune.

A mariner of both Elven and mortal descent who undertakes a great voyage across the sea to seek the help of the powers of the West on behalf of the free peoples of Middle-earth, becoming a figure of hope in the darkest days.
