The Silver Chair characters
By C.S. Lewis
Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.
Aslan (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The Lion of Narnia, known to the reader from the earlier books: the country's maker and true king, who calls people into it from our world when he has work for them and is never at anyone's command.
Jill Pole (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
A girl at Experiment House, a modern co-educational school where the staff take an interest in the bullies rather than in their victims. She is crying behind the gymnasium when the story opens, having been badly treated by the school's gang. She is proud, quick to take offence, and has a bad head for heights.
Eustace Scrubb (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
A boy at the same school, much changed since the previous holidays for reasons he can only half explain. He has been to another world, believes in it entirely, and is now a target of the school gang himself. He is steadier and kinder than he used to be, though still inclined to lecture.
King Caspian (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 3
The King of Narnia, now very old and frail. He is setting out on a voyage east to ask Aslan who should rule after him, since he has no heir left at home.
Trumpkin (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 3
The dwarf who fought in Caspian's war long ago, now extremely old and stone deaf, and Lord Regent of Narnia while the king is away. He is genial, obstinate, and mishears nearly everything said to him.
Glimfeather (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 3
A Talking Owl who takes an interest in the newcomers and carries Jill on his back by night. Courteous and conspiratorial, he arranges for them to hear what the older Narnians will not discuss openly.
Lord Drinian (Minor)
First appears in chapter 4
The king's old sea captain, who was with Caspian on his eastern voyage and later kept company with his son. He blames himself bitterly for something he failed to prevent.
Prince Rilian (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 4
Caspian's only son and the heir to Narnia, who disappeared about ten years before the story begins. After his mother was killed by a great green serpent he rode out day after day to hunt it, and told Drinian of a beautiful woman in green whom he had seen in the same place; then he rode out once more and never came back, and the search for him cost many lives before it was forbidden.
Puddleglum (Protagonist)
First appears in chapter 5
A Marsh-wiggle, a tall thin creature with webbed feet and a solemn face who lives alone in a wigwam in the marshes. He is a determined pessimist who expects the worst of every plan and every day, and volunteers to guide the children north because somebody responsible has to. In practice he is braver and steadier than his own gloom suggests.
The Lady of the Green Kirtle
First appears in chapter 6
A beautiful woman in a green dress met on the road in the wild lands of the north, riding with a silent knight in black armour. She is charming and full of advice, and recommends the travellers to the castle of Harfang, where the giants, she says, are gentle and hospitable and keeping an autumn feast.
Golg (Minor)
First appears in chapter 14
An Earthman of the deep land of Bism, far below the caverns the travellers pass through. Cheerful once he is not being driven, he explains that the sad, silent gnomes of the middle caves were brought there against their will by magic.
