The Sirens of Titan recap

Winston Niles Rumfoord, spread through space and time after entering a chrono-synclastic infundibulum, predicts that wealthy Malachi Constant will travel from Earth to Mars, Mercury, back to Earth, and finally Titan. Malachi loses his fortune, is taken into the Martian army, has his memory erased, and lives as the soldier Unk. He discovers that he was manipulated into killing his friend Stony and escapes with Boaz to Mercury. After Mars's deliberately doomed invasion of Earth, Rumfoord founds a religion of divine indifference and exposes Unk, Bee, and their son Chrono as Malachi and Beatrice's family. Exiled to Titan, they learn that human history has been manipulated by the alien Tralfamadorians to deliver a small repair part to their stranded messenger Salo. Beatrice dies on Titan and Chrono remains there. Salo returns the elderly Malachi to Earth, where he freezes to death but receives a consoling final vision of Stony welcoming him into the afterlife.

Malachi Constant, heir to an immense fortune and famous for his luck, visits the Newport estate of Winston Niles Rumfoord. Rumfoord and his dog Kazak entered a chrono-synclastic infundibulum on a private space flight and now exist as waves spread through the solar system, becoming solid on Earth at predictable intervals. Rumfoord claims to perceive past and future together. He tells Malachi that Malachi will lose his fortune, travel to Mars, Mercury, Earth, and Titan, and have a child with Rumfoord's wife Beatrice. Both Malachi and Beatrice reject the prediction, particularly the connection forced between them. Malachi returns to his business empire, where the origins of his wealth in his father Noel's strange investment system offer little assurance that his luck can continue.

The Constant financial empire collapses, fulfilling the first part of Rumfoord's forecast. Malachi and Beatrice both try to avoid the rest of the future described to them, but are drawn into the same larger design and transported to Mars. There a secret army is being built from people taken from Earth. Soldiers are controlled through implanted radio antennas and repeated memory erasure, allowing commanders to inflict pain and suppress disobedience. Malachi's former identity is buried beneath the name Unk. He serves beside Boaz with only fragments of a previous life, aware that the army has removed knowledge he once possessed. The Martian project is preparing for war with Earth, although the controlled rank and file understand little of its true command or purpose.

Unk finds a letter written by his earlier self before another scheduled memory erasure. It identifies people the army has tried to make him forget, including his friend Stony Stevenson, a woman called Bee, and her child Chrono. The letter also warns him about the control system around him. Unk learns that he was manipulated into killing Stony as a demonstration of obedience, a discovery that turns his confused resistance into flight. He and Boaz leave Mars in a spacecraft intended for the invasion, but their route carries them beneath Mercury's surface. There they encounter simple life forms called harmoniums, which feed on vibrations. Boaz chooses to stay with these creatures, finding satisfaction in caring for them, while Unk remains determined to escape and recover the family and history taken from him.

Mars invades Earth with inadequately equipped forces and is decisively defeated. The invasion's real effect is to unite Earth's divided peoples through shared grief and hatred of a common enemy. Rumfoord uses that transformed mood to establish the Church of God the Utterly Indifferent, teaching that no divine power arranges events for individual benefit and making former Martian soldiers examples within the new faith. Unk eventually escapes Mercury and returns toward Earth, still following the chain of events Rumfoord predicted. Bee and Chrono also survive the Martian disaster. The paths of the three are being arranged for a public reunion in which their suppressed earlier identities will become part of Rumfoord's religious spectacle.

Back on Earth, Unk is publicly revealed as Malachi Constant. Bee is Beatrice Rumfoord, and Chrono is the child whose birth Rumfoord predicted. Rumfoord turns their suffering into a lesson for his Church: Malachi becomes the supposed example of a man people should hate for believing good fortune marked him as specially favored. Malachi has little of the arrogant heir left in him after memory erasure, war, and exile, while Beatrice's hostility has been reshaped by the same ordeals. Rumfoord orders the family away from Earth. With the route now matching his original forecast, Malachi, Beatrice, and Chrono depart for Titan, the distant moon where Rumfoord said Malachi's journey would end.

On Titan, Malachi, Beatrice, and Chrono meet Salo, a Tralfamadorian messenger stranded when his spacecraft lost a tiny component. Rumfoord explains that Tralfamadorians have influenced human history across millennia to encourage civilization to manufacture and deliver that replacement. Monumental achievements and signals from the past were steps in a supply request, and the required part is the small metal piece Chrono has carried as a charm. A solar disturbance then sweeps Rumfoord and Kazak away. Salo dismantles himself in grief, but Malachi later repairs him. The family ages on Titan: Beatrice writes a final account and dies, while Chrono chooses life among Titan's birds. Salo returns the elderly Malachi to Earth at his request. In wintertime Indianapolis, Malachi freezes while waiting for a bus. Salo eases his death with a vision of Stony Stevenson welcoming him and telling him that he has succeeded.

On Titan, Rumfoord explains that Tralfamadorian influence has steered human civilization so that a tiny replacement part could eventually reach the stranded messenger Salo. The needed part is Chrono's metal good-luck piece. Rumfoord and Kazak are swept away as the solar disturbance sustaining their materializations changes. Salo, grieving for Rumfoord, dismantles himself, but Malachi later restores him. Beatrice spends her remaining life writing and dies on Titan, while Chrono rejects human society and lives among Titan's birds. Salo offers to return Malachi to Earth. Now old and calling himself Malachi Constant again, he chooses Indianapolis, where he arrives during winter and freezes while waiting for a bus. At the moment of death, Salo mercifully gives him a vision of Stony Stevenson welcoming him and assuring him that he has passed a final test.
