The Sixth Rune characters

By A. F. Kay

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Ruwen Starfield (Protagonist)

Also known as Silent Savage

Appears from the start

An Architect stranded beyond every working gate after escaping the fifth vault. Alone except for the independent mind inside his inner Citadel, Ruwen begins constructing the resources, control, and training he needs to survive and find a route home.

Overlord (Supporting)

Appears from the start

An independent mind living within Ruwen's fortified inner Citadel. Separated from Ruwen by an earlier mental trap, he no longer shares every thought or feeling, but remains a practical strategist who helps Ruwen plan for survival in isolation.

Lead narrator (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 6

The senior voice among the Citadel narrators, formed from the manifesto of a former Mistwraith adversary. Restricted to language from that text, this narrator directs the others.

Rami (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 29

Ruwen's soulbound intelligence companion. After he has spent about thirteen months stranded, her distant voice interrupts his sparring and gives him the first evidence that she has reached him.

Hamma (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 30

Ruwen's partner and a Warden who joins the long search for him after the fifth-vault escape. She emerges with Rami from Shelley at Rainbow's End, ending Ruwen's physical isolation even though the group still faces a long journey home.

Shelley (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 30

An elder star tortoise who carries the rescue party across immense distances. Shelley narrows Ruwen's position by tracing the astronomical disturbances he caused, then reaches Rainbow's End through her command of space, wormholes, and size.

Sift (Supporting)

Also known as Soaring Sage

First appears in chapter 31

Ruwen's step-fighting partner, reunited with him aboard Shelley after the rescue. His instinctive choice of a name for the nearby star gives Ruwen the clue that his months alone formed part of a closed time loop.

Lylan (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 31

An ally who survives the fifth-vault escape and returns with the rescue party. Lylan is also Dalyn's sister, and on reuniting with Ruwen she thanks him for freeing her brother while recognizing what his solitary choice cost him.

Xavier (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 31

A celestial remnant allied with Rami who returns with the rescue party aboard Shelley. His arrival with the others confirms that he survived the aftermath of the fifth vault.

Lear (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 33

A limited duplicate assigned to Shelley's revival bath, with the complete Lear still located in Uru's third temple. It oversees progression and display information for Hamma and Lylan without relying on Uru's blessing.

Izac

First appears in chapter 34

A possible member of the coalition gathering against Ruwen Starfield while its members believe him dead.

Equation narrator (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 40

An autonomous narrator created when research journals by a deceased goddess enter the mind of Ruwen. She proposes and tests a defensive formula shield to protect the Citadel and its inhabitants.

Uru (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 64

A deity connected to Ruwen's Architect abilities and spiritual growth. Contacted through Uru's Touch, she explains that his twelve connected pathways carried him far beyond normal portal range and make him the sixth rune.

Uru's fragment (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 66

A small, fading divine sliver distinct from the main Uru. When the projection is about to die after delivering its warning, Ruwen, Rami, and Overlord attempt to preserve it inside Ruwen's mind, despite the danger its energy poses there.

Numarrow (Minor)

First appears in chapter 74

An Ink Lord whose body and Emblem of Dominion remain hidden in Ruwen's inventory. Ruwen also possesses Numarrow's Scroll of the Faithful, which contains credentials for a private library but creates serious danger if used or exposed.

Fractal (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 76

The sentient keeper of Shattered Sun and a protected ally of the returning group. Before granting Lylan full access to the dungeon, Ruwen requires her oath that she will neither harm Fractal nor knowingly allow anyone else to do so.

Kai (Supporting)

Also known as Kysandra

First appears in chapter 77

An Eiru intelligence operative who intercepts the returning party at the Blood Gate after first concealing her identity. Kai has maintained watchers for Ruwen and briefs him on a northern revolt, criminal control of the tyrium mines, and a settlement network under strain.

Miranda (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 77

A powerful Black Pyramid figure who arrives at the Blood Gate as Rami prepares for a major evolution. Her immediate purpose is to oversee that transformation while Ruwen and Sift remain nearby for the masters' trial.

Blapy (Supporting)

Also known as Miranda

First appears in chapter 78

The familiar Black Pyramid guardian now confirmed to be the same person as Miranda. She directs Rami's evolution and investigates whether Xavier's altered energy can support a revival system independent of divine control, with Xavier treated as a willing participant.

Madda (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 80

The mother of Sift and a Bamboo Viper Grandmaster. She is waiting with Padda in the Black Pyramid kitchen when Ruwen returns to find Sift.

Padda (Supporting)

The father of Sift and a Bamboo Viper Grandmaster. He waits beside Madda in the Black Pyramid kitchen when Ruwen arrives.

Echo (Antagonist)

An infernal-aspect adversary who knows Ruwen survived and recognizes the strength hidden by his Scarecrow aspect. Bearing a Bamboo Viper clan mark that prevents his attack, she invokes Inferno's Embrace and sends him away for her father's investigation.

Plague Siren (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 83

An infernal-aspect commander and Ruwen's hostile mother-in-law, waiting at the bind point where he is imprisoned. She explains that the realm cuts him off from his inventory, portal chalk, and most divine-linked options while a demon army surrounds him.

Poison (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 91

A hostile aspect who joins the Plague Siren against Ruwen. Poison is one of three members of the group who appear highly trained in step fighting.
