In fact he survived and, aided by allies, has been making his own way through the Mortmain Mountains toward the ruined V.F.D. headquarters. Brave, well-read about the secret organization, and skilled with maps, he becomes a close friend and ally to the Baudelaires.

The spoiled, nasty girl who once bullied the Baudelaires at boarding school, now among a troop of Snow Scouts in the mountains. Still cruel and self-important, she reappears to torment the children and to attach herself to whoever will spoil her.

One of a pair of sinister, powerful villains who arrive in the mountains and whom even Count Olaf treats with fear and deference. Cold and commanding, he seems to hold authority over Olaf and to answer to no one, hinting at a menace far greater than the Baudelaires have yet faced.

The second of a pair of frightening, powerful villains who appear in the mountains and inspire dread even in Count Olaf. Ruthless and coolly authoritative, she and her companion seem to stand above Olaf in some sinister hierarchy, promising terrible things to come.
