The Snowman recap

After heavy snow falls, James spends the day building a snowman in his garden and gives it a face and clothing from household objects. At midnight the Snowman comes alive. James secretly welcomes him into the house, where each explores the other's world, before the Snowman takes James flying across the countryside. They reach a gathering of snowmen and meet Father Christmas, who gives James a keepsake. The Snowman flies him home before dawn. When James wakes the next morning, the weather has changed and his friend has melted, but the gift from Father Christmas remains as evidence of their night together.

James wakes to find the countryside transformed by deep snow. He rushes outside and spends the day rolling and lifting snow into a figure larger than himself. He carefully creates a face and borrows objects from around the house to dress it, continuing until the Snowman seems to have a character of his own. After nightfall James keeps thinking about the figure alone in the garden. When he looks outside at midnight, the Snowman moves and greets him, and James quietly slips out to meet the friend he has made.

James brings the Snowman indoors while his parents sleep. The visitor is fascinated by lights, furniture, food, and appliances, though James must keep him away from anything too warm. Their silent tour turns the ordinary house into a place of discovery, and James shares what he can without waking the adults. The Snowman then leads James outside and reveals that he can rise into the air. Holding tightly to him, James leaves the garden behind as the pair begins a flight over the sleeping winter landscape.

The Snowman carries James far from home, over fields, towns, and cold water. They arrive at a remote gathering filled with other snowmen, who welcome their human guest into a lively winter celebration. James meets Father Christmas amid the festivities and receives a special keepsake. Although the strange company and the flight make the night feel outside ordinary time, James and his companion must leave before morning, when daylight and a change in temperature could endanger the Snowman.

The Snowman flies James back across the dark landscape and returns him to his home before the family wakes. James says goodbye and goes to bed with the present Father Christmas gave him, still full of the night's journey. In the morning he hurries to the garden, expecting to see his friend again. Warmer weather has melted the Snowman, and only the borrowed clothing and features remain where he stood. James grieves the loss, but the keepsake from Father Christmas remains with him as evidence of the flight, the celebration, and the brief friendship.

After the flight and the winter celebration, the Snowman carries James back through the night sky and leaves him safely at home. James returns to bed with the keepsake Father Christmas gave him, proof to him that the journey was more than a dream. Morning brings warmer weather. James hurries outside to greet his friend but finds that the Snowman has melted, leaving only the borrowed hat, scarf, and other objects on the ground. The gift from the night remains, allowing James to hold both the wonder of the friendship and the sadness of its brief life.
