By R.A. Salvatore

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Wulfgar (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A towering barbarian warrior who left the Companions of the Hall after failing to fit his old life around six years of demonic captivity. In Luskan he tries to smother nightmares with drink and brawling, carrying Aegis-fang but little sense of what he wants to become.

Morik the Rogue (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A resourceful Luskan thief who becomes Wulfgar's closest companion in the city. Morik survives by charm, contacts and calculated self-interest, but his loyalty to the troubled barbarian grows beyond a simple partnership of convenience.

Arumn Gardpeck (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The owner of the Cutlass tavern in Luskan, where Wulfgar finds drink, work and a place that asks few questions. Arumn has practical sympathy for damaged people but must also protect his staff and establishment from Wulfgar's worsening violence.

Delly Curtie (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

A young woman working at the Cutlass who sees Wulfgar's pain more clearly than many of the tavern's patrons do. Delly offers warmth without sharing his heroic past or expecting him to become the man his friends remember.

Captain Deudermont (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

The respected captain of the Sea Sprite and an old ally of Drizzt and Wulfgar. Deudermont's standing in Luskan gives unusual weight to his judgment when Wulfgar's self-destructive course becomes a matter for the city's courts.

Meralda (Protagonist)

First appears in chapter 4

A young woman from the small northern holding of Auckney. Meralda's family has little power, yet the attention of Lord Feringal and her attachment to Jaka place her private choices under the scrutiny of a household that can determine her future.

Lord Feringal (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 4

The young lord of Auckney, sincere in his affection for Meralda but sheltered by rank and family. He wants to marry her despite the difference in station and does not initially understand how much fear and secrecy surround her consent.

Priscilla (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 4

Feringal's protective and controlling sister, who regards Meralda as an unsuitable match for the lord of Auckney. Priscilla uses household authority and social pressure to investigate the young woman and keep the marriage from weakening the family position.

Jaka Sculi (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 14

A man from Meralda's earlier life whose bond with her conflicts with Lord Feringal's courtship. He offers the appeal of escape from Auckney's expectations without possessing the rank or stability needed to shield her from their consequences.

Lord Brandeburg (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 22

A regional noble whose authority reaches Auckney when theft, accusation and questions of punishment exceed the household's ability to settle them privately. His arrival turns personal secrets into matters of formal judgment.
