A deeply religious Black man who has brought White back to his modest New York apartment after preventing him from stepping in front of a train. A former prisoner who believes that God redirected his life, he treats the rescue as a responsibility and tries to keep his guest talking long enough to choose life.

A white professor whom Black has just stopped from killing himself at a subway platform. Educated, private, and determined to leave the apartment, he rejects religious consolation and initially resists explaining the despair behind his decision.
