Joyce Meadowcroft moves to Coopers Chase and is invited into the Thursday Murder Club, where Elizabeth, Ron, and Ibrahim examine files supplied by their former member Penny Gray, a retired police officer now seriously ill. Joyce's nursing knowledge earns her a place at the table. At the same time, police constable Donna De Freitas visits the community to give a safety talk and discovers that the residents are much more interested in homicide investigation than crime prevention. Developer Ian Ventham wants to expand Coopers Chase onto land occupied by an old cemetery, while his builder and business associate Tony Curran resists being pushed out of the project. Soon afterward Tony is found murdered. Elizabeth treats the death as the club's first live case and arranges for the four retirees to gather evidence alongside, and sometimes ahead of, Donna and Detective Chief Inspector Chris Hudson. Tony's criminal associations, business conflicts, and talent for coercion create a broad field of suspects.

The inquiry focuses on Tony's money, old associates, and a photograph that appears to connect his past with Ron's son Jason, a former boxer. Ron resents the suspicion but joins the effort to test it. The club also takes an interest in Bogdan, a Polish builder at Coopers Chase whose quiet manner and practical skills make him both useful and difficult to read. Elizabeth exchanges information strategically with Donna and Chris, ensuring that the residents remain involved even when the police try to limit access.

Residents organize against the removal of the cemetery. During the confrontation at the site, Ian Ventham suddenly collapses and dies. Evidence indicates that he was poisoned, turning Tony's business rival into a second murder victim and complicating every theory about the first death. The cemetery itself yields human remains and a further mystery about who was buried there. The club and police now have to determine whether Tony, Ian, and the hidden body belong to one chain of violence or several unrelated histories.

Medical evidence narrows the means by which Ian was killed and directs attention toward people with access to drugs and clinical knowledge. Meanwhile, the remains and the story of Father Matthew Mackie draw the club into the cemetery's past. Penny and John Gray become increasingly important: Penny's old police work supplied the club's cases, and John has spent years guarding both her and the memories she can no longer explain. Elizabeth recognizes that the present investigation may expose an old decision made outside official justice.

The club separates misleading coincidences from genuine connections. The photograph does not prove Jason killed Tony, and the motives surrounding Ian's development plans belong to a different story from Tony's criminal dealings. Evidence concerning the poison identifies Ian's killer, while the buried remains lead back to a death Penny investigated before her illness. Donna and Chris close the official investigations without possessing every truth known by the retirees.
