The Tin Woodman of Oz recap

When Woot the Wanderer asks about his old human life, the Tin Woodman remembers Nimmie Amee and sets out with Woot and the Scarecrow to find her. Their road leads through Loonville and the castle of Mrs. Yoop, who transforms them into animals. With Polychrome, another enchanted captive, they escape and eventually regain workable forms. The party meets the Tin Soldier, Captain Fyter, who also once loved Nimmie Amee, and visits the tinsmith Ku-Klip. He reveals that he joined the discarded human parts of the two tin men to make Chopfyt. Nimmie Amee is found happily married to Chopfyt and refuses to exchange her chosen life for either former suitor. The men of tin accept her decision, Ozma restores Woot, and the company parts in friendship.

The Tin Woodman was once the Munchkin woodcutter Nick Chopper. An enchanted axe cost him his human body piece by piece, and the tinsmith Ku-Klip replaced each lost part with tin. Nick later traveled with Dorothy and the Scarecrow, received a kind heart, and became emperor of the Winkies. Ozma now rules all Oz.

Woot the Wanderer visits the Tin Woodman's castle and asks how its ruler came to be made of tin. Nick Chopper tells of loving the Munchkin girl Nimmie Amee and of the Wicked Witch of the East enchanting his axe to prevent their marriage. As each injury was repaired with tin, he lost touch with Nimmie Amee. Woot's questions convince him that he has neglected an old promise, so he sets out to find her, accompanied by Woot and the Scarecrow. Their roundabout road takes them through Loonville, whose inflated inhabitants object to strangers, and onward to the isolated home of Mrs. Yoop, a giantess with dangerous powers of transformation.

Mrs. Yoop, a Yookoohoo skilled in transformations, changes her visitors into animal shapes: the Tin Woodman becomes a tin owl, the Scarecrow a stuffed bear, and Woot a green monkey. They meet Polychrome, the Rainbow's Daughter, who has been trapped under another enchantment. The prisoners escape the castle together, but leaving Mrs. Yoop does not immediately restore their proper bodies. They must travel without being recognized and depend on one another's voices and characters rather than familiar appearances. Old acquaintances, including Jinjur, give the peculiar company shelter and help. Polychrome's fairy nature offers some hope, but the friends still need stronger magic to put every transformation right and must continue the search for Nimmie Amee.

With much of the transformation trouble overcome, the party resumes the journey and meets Tommy Kwikstep, a man burdened with extra legs by a badly judged magical request. More important, they encounter Captain Fyter, a soldier whose body was also replaced with tin after an enchanted weapon injured him. He reveals that he loved Nimmie Amee after Nick disappeared, giving the search two former suitors instead of one. The company visits Ku-Klip, the tinsmith responsible for both metal bodies. Ku-Klip explains that he kept the sound human pieces left from his work and eventually used them to assemble a new man called Chopfyt. This unexpected third figure offers the best clue yet to Nimmie Amee's whereabouts and forces both men of tin to reconsider what their old claims might mean.

The travelers follow the final clue and find Nimmie Amee living with Chopfyt, the man made from parts once belonging to Nick Chopper and Captain Fyter. She has married Chopfyt and is content with the home and life she chose. When the two tin men offer her other futures, she firmly refuses; she does not regard either old attachment as a reason to abandon her present husband. They accept her decision rather than disturb her happiness. Ozma uses her magic to restore Woot's proper form, and Polychrome returns to the Rainbow. The companions separate for their own homes, while the Tin Woodman resumes his rule of the Winkies with the quest complete and with a clearer understanding that Nimmie Amee's wishes belong to her.

The searchers finally locate Nimmie Amee and discover that she is already married to Chopfyt, the man Ku-Klip assembled from the human parts left behind by Nick Chopper and Captain Fyter. Nimmie Amee is content with the life she has chosen and has no wish to leave it for either man of tin. Both old suitors accept her answer, ending the Tin Woodman's belief that he must repair the past by marrying her. Ozma restores Woot's proper form, and Polychrome is able to return to her father, the Rainbow. The travelers go back to their own homes and duties. The Tin Woodman remains emperor of the Winkies, having learned that faithfulness includes respecting Nimmie Amee's present happiness rather than deciding her future for her.
