The Valley of Fear

By Arthur Conan Doyle

A coded note reaches Baker Street from Porlock, an informer inside the criminal organisation of Professor Moriarty, and once Holmes has found the key, it gives a warning: danger threatens a man named Douglas at Birlstone. The message is barely read when Inspector Alec MacDonald of Scotland Yard arrives with news that Mr Douglas of Birlstone Manor was killed the night before. Holmes, Watson and MacDonald travel down to Sussex, where the local detective, White Mason, takes them to an old moated house whose drawbridge is raised every evening. In the study a man lies dead from a shotgun fired at close range, and beside him is a card marked with the letters V.V. and the number 341.
