In short (whole book)

Erin, a young woman displaced from Earth, claims an abandoned inn outside Liscor and gradually turns it into a refuge for drakes, gnolls, Antinium, goblins, adventurers, and an undead servant. Her chess games encourage individual thought among Antinium workers and deepen her alliance with the goblin Rags. Elsewhere, the classless runner Ryoka survives dangerous deliveries, draws Magnolia Reinhart's attention, and becomes indebted to the Horns of Hammerad. A silver-rank expedition into nearby ruins releases Skinner, an undead horror that devastates the adventurers and attacks Liscor. Erin's newly individual chess-club workers defend her at terrible cost. Pisces, Toren, the Watch, the Antinium, reborn Klbkch, and Rags's goblins turn the battle, with Rags killing Skinner. Liscor survives damaged. Erin reaches Innkeeper level 18 and mourns the workers, while only Bird, Gary, Belgrade, and Anand survive their defense. Yvlon survives the expedition in severe trauma, and Ryoka returns to the inn but leaves without seeing Erin.

Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)

Erin, a twenty-year-old from Michigan, is injured and stranded in an unfamiliar world after an unexplained transition. She takes refuge in a deserted inn, where she learns that classes, levels, and skills are real. Cleaning and cooking gradually make the building habitable, but food and water bring their own dangers: goblins pursue her, a rock crab guards an orchard, and a predatory fish poisons her wounded hand. Erin nevertheless defends the inn from a goblin incursion and begins treating it as a home. After she turns the sign to open, two armed visitors arrive. Relc, a drake Spearmaster, and Klbkch, an Antinium guardsman, investigate her cooking fire. They explain that the surrounding settlement was abandoned after a plague and confirm that Erin may remain. Klbkch recognizes the poison in her hand and cures it with a healing potion. Erin feeds both guards, tells them about her impossible arrival, and gains her first paying guests and tentative local allies. By the end of their visit, she is an Innkeeper at level five with Basic Cleaning, Basic Cooking, and Basic Crafting.

Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)

Erin's next visitor is a hungry human mage who first uses a frightening illusion to force his way inside. He has studied at Wistram and admits knowledge of necromancy. Relc and Klbkch regard him as dangerous, but Erin refuses to allow him to be killed in her inn, and he remains free. A wider glimpse of the world reveals that Erin is not the only person transported from Earth, though she does not yet know this. With her pantry nearly empty, Erin walks to Liscor. Selys, a receptionist at the Adventurers' Guild, gives her directions, but Erin encounters widespread hostility toward humans and is badly overcharged for provisions. At the guard barracks, she overhears Relc disparaging humans and leaves hurt. Goblins attack her on the road home until Relc intervenes. He carries her supplies, apologizes, and confirms the merchant cheated her. Erin returns to the inn with food but little money, a damaged trust in Relc, and an ongoing danger along the route to Liscor. She reaches Innkeeper level six.

Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)

Relc tries to apologize by killing three goblins near the inn, but the deaths provoke their chieftain. Erin is stabbed and badly burned while killing him in self-defense. Klbkch saves her with a healing potion and becomes a trusted confidant, while Erin insists that the remaining goblins be left alone. Still traumatized, she later feeds four starving goblins rather than attacking them. This peaceful meal begins a new relationship with the local survivors. Erin uses the chieftain bounty to challenge the dishonest merchant. She defeats his nephew Olesm, Liscor's tactician, at chess and recovers her money. Krshia, a gnoll shopkeeper, becomes a fair supplier and friend. Erin names her business The Wandering Inn and posts a rule against killing goblins. A second displaced human, Ryoka, has built a separate life as a barefoot runner. She completes dangerous deliveries around Celum, including work for the noblewoman Magnolia Reinhart. Ryoka hides her origin and avoids classes and levels, but her speed and independence draw both profitable work and resentment. Garia offers companionship, while the influential Fals pressures Ryoka to leave Magnolia's requests to other runners.

Story so far - through chapter 34 (this book)

Erin traps acid flies and turns them into a distinctive food, especially popular with Klbkch and other Antinium. News of newly uncovered ruins near Liscor draws adventurers to the area. At the inn, Erin teaches chess to Olesm, goblins, and twelve Antinium workers. Rags, leader of the small goblin group, proves an able player, while the workers reproduce the game with alarming speed. One worker rejects the Hive and murders seven others before Klbkch kills him, but the remaining workers still seek instruction. A hostile goblin band later attacks the inn. Rags's group fights beside Erin and Klbkch, while an Antinium worker dies protecting them. Klbkch is mortally wounded and dies despite Erin's attempt to carry him to safety. Liscor turns against Erin, but Krshia and Selys support her. At the inn, she persuades a grieving worker to recognize himself as an individual. He chooses the name Pawn. Pawn can still draw on the thoughts of many workers during chess, yet he has begun forming a self apart from the collective. After Erin plays through her grief with him, she reaches Innkeeper level 11 and gains Immortal Moment. In a distant, failing empire, two unnamed twins tell the King of Destruction that they came from a technologically advanced world. He accepts their account and concludes that other outsiders may also have arrived. Renewed by this discovery, he ends his withdrawal from power, retakes his throne, and orders his vassals to drive out occupying forces and assemble their warriors. He also compels the twins to serve as his attendants and future bodyguards.

Story so far - through chapter 43 (this book)

Ryoka's conflict with other runners culminates in Persua's group arranging for a cart to shatter her leg. The Horns of Hammerad, indebted to Ryoka for a delivery that saved them, help her find another cure after Magnolia offers powerful healing in exchange for unrestricted answers about her origin. Ceria and Pisces reset and heal the leg, restoring Ryoka's ability to run. Ryoka later accepts an open request into the deadly High Passes. Several supposed healing potions are actually mana potions, worsening her injuries as she flees goblins, giant wolves, carnivorous goats, and gargoyles. She reaches a dragon's hidden cave and collapses, alive but poisoned. Near Liscor, Erin destroys a shield-spider nest and meets the renowned part-gazer adventurer Ghazi. The spider bounty brings Erin money, but an unknown thief remains active in the city and later burglarizes the inn. Erin's unusual community continues to grow around chess, goblin guests, and Antinium workers. The ruins attract more human adventurers and increase tension with Liscor's nonhuman population, while the Antinium Queen sends a replacement official to manage the Hive's interests.

Story so far - through chapter 49 (this book)

Pisces pays part of his inn debt by giving Erin an animated skeleton to serve as guard and cleaner. The skeleton protects the inn, works without tiring, and begins developing beyond Erin's expectations. She eventually names it Toren. Despite hostility from visiting human adventurers, The Wandering Inn openly shelters goblins, Antinium, and undead. The dragon heals Ryoka, pays her for reaching him, and binds her to deliver a sealed scroll and ring to a necromancer in the Bloodfields. Back in Celum, Ryoka rejects the Runner's Guild's apology, clashes again with Persua, and evades Magnolia's surveillance. She learns a basic light spell with Ceria's help, while Rags surprises Pisces by showing an aptitude for conventional magic. Erin tells Krshia that she came from another world populated by billions of humans. Krshia agrees to keep the secret among gnolls and identifies Wistram as Erin's best possible route to finding magic that could send her home. The journey and an archmage's help would be difficult and expensive, but Erin finally has a direction. Krshia quietly begins seeking other displaced people while arranging protection for her.

Story so far - through chapter 55 (this book)

Five silver-rank adventuring companies assemble to explore Liscor's ruins, with the Horns of Hammerad using Erin's inn as a base. Before the expedition, Ksmvr, the Antinium official who resembles Klbkch, seizes Pawn for interrogation. Pawn returns permanently maimed but officially judged an individual rather than an aberration. Ksmvr then attempts to capture Erin and reclaim Pawn, but Relc, Ghazi, and concealed gnolls make the confrontation too costly. Pawn ultimately chooses to return to the Hive, where the Queen is occupied with a ritual called Anastasis. Ryoka's anger ruptures her friendship with Ceria after a series of fights with Yvlon, Calruz, and the gathered adventurers. She leaves alone as the companies prepare for the ruins. At the inn, Toren increasingly acts on his own judgment and places Erin's safety above Pisces's commands. Erin reaches Innkeeper level 15. The expedition completes its preparations with more than forty fighters, supplies, magical support, and Olesm joining as tactician. Although Erin has gained Power Strike through training, she remains at the inn while the five companies prepare to enter the underground complex.

Story so far - through chapter 60 (this book)

The five companies enter a vast burial complex beneath the ruins. An undead ambush kills several adventurers, but Olesm's Rapid Retreat opens an escape route and his Attack Formation helps the survivors destroy four Crypt Lords. Deeper inside, the expedition finds a warning about Skinner. The creature emerges wearing the harvested skin of its victims and projects terror that prevents effective resistance. The expedition collapses: several captains and members of the Horns are killed, Calruz loses an arm and is overwhelmed, and Skinner leads the undead toward the surface. Skinner's force enters Liscor through the north gate. Zevara rallies the Watch and civilians, Pisces fights to prove the horde is not his creation, and Ksmvr provides only limited Antinium support while the Queen continues Anastasis. At The Wandering Inn, some chess-playing workers reject an attacker from their own ranks and openly claim individual identities. Knight leads the newly named Antinium in a protective perimeter around Erin as the undead close in. Liscor is under siege, the ruins expedition is destroyed, and Erin's inn becomes the workers' chosen position for a final defense.

How does it end? (ending)

Skinner escapes the ruins after destroying the silver-rank expedition and leads an undead assault on Liscor. Thirty-two newly individual Antinium workers defend Erin and The Wandering Inn. Knight and most of the others die, but Pisces sends covert undead aid, Toren helps expose Skinner's true body, and the Antinium Queen completes Klbkch's costly rebirth. Klbkch returns in a new body, Rags commits her goblins to the fight, and Rags kills Skinner. Liscor and the inn remain standing but badly damaged. Erin is alive at Innkeeper level 18, grieving the workers; Bird, Gary, Belgrade, and Anand are their only survivors. Klbkch replaces Ksmvr as Prognugator, while resurrection is too costly to restore the fallen workers. Toren has become more independent and secretly retains a red magical gemstone from Skinner. Yvlon Byres survives the ruins scarred and unresponsive. Ryoka returns, learns of the Horns' losses, finds Yvlon alive, and approaches Erin's inn before turning away. Her compelled Bloodfields delivery, conflict with Magnolia and Persua, estrangement from Erin, and route home remain unresolved, as does Erin's distant hope of reaching Wistram.
