The Warrior's Apprentice

By Lois McMaster Bujold

After a failed physical test ends his hopes of a conventional military career, Miles Vorkosigan travels to Beta Colony with his bodyguard Bothari and Bothari's daughter Elena, ostensibly to visit his grandmother but also to quietly investigate a mystery about Elena's origins that Bothari has kept hidden for years. At the Beta Colony shuttleport, Miles talks a desperate, unemployed jump pilot out of a violent standoff and impulsively buys his obsolete freighter, swearing the pilot into his service and taking on a substantial debt in the process. As Miles searches for a way to pay off his new ship, he recruits a hiding military deserter as crew and uncovers a lucrative but legally risky cargo run into a war zone that could clear his debts, if he is willing to take the risk.
