Hiram Walker is enslaved at Lockless, the Virginia plantation owned by his white father. When his half brother Maynard dies in a bridge accident, Hiram survives through a mysterious power called Conduction, which joins memory to movement across impossible distances. After an attempted escape with Sophia ends in betrayal and imprisonment, Hiram is recruited into the Underground by Corinne Quinn. Training in Virginia and Philadelphia teaches him both the network's discipline and the limits of freedom in the North. Harriet Tubman helps him understand that his lost memories of his mother, Rose, are the key to using his gift. Hiram returns to Virginia to rescue Sophia, who now has a daughter, and to secure the people still vulnerable at the collapsing plantation. After Howell's death, Lockless becomes an Underground station. Hiram reunites Thena with lost family, builds a home with Sophia and Caroline, and uses Conduction to carry others away from slavery.

Hiram Walker grows up enslaved at Lockless, a declining Virginia tobacco plantation divided between the white Quality and the enslaved Tasked. He is the son of the master, Howell Walker, and Rose, an enslaved woman sold away during his childhood. Hiram remembers nearly everything except his mother's face. Howell brings him to the main house and assigns him to serve Maynard, Hiram's reckless white half brother and Lockless's intended heir. While driving Maynard across a bridge, Hiram sees a vision connected to Rose. The carriage plunges into the river; Maynard dies, but Hiram is carried out by a power he cannot explain. His survival leaves him aware that memory and water are linked to something extraordinary within him.

After Maynard's death, Hiram returns to the life of the Tasked and grows closer to Sophia, whose determination to govern her own life exposes the limits of any private promise he might make her. Lockless is failing, and the threat that enslaved people will be sold hangs over every relationship. Hiram resolves to escape with Sophia. He turns to Georgie Parks, a free Black man who appears to know a route out. The plan is betrayed. Hiram is seized and imprisoned, while Sophia is taken elsewhere. Violence and isolation are used to break his certainty, but his unusual memory makes him valuable to people whose interests reach beyond the plantation.

Hiram's captors and rescuers prove to be connected to a secret Virginia branch of the Underground led by Corinne Quinn. Her public identity as a wealthy white member of the planter class conceals organized resistance, and her estate at Bryceton serves as a base. Hiram is angry that the network allowed him to suffer as part of a test, but he accepts training under Corinne and Hawkins because it offers a way to fight the system that owns his family. He learns surveillance, codes, disguise, and the hard choices involved in moving people through hostile territory. The organization also wants to understand his unexplained escape from the river, though Hiram still cannot summon that power deliberately.

Sent north, Hiram joins the Underground community in Philadelphia. Raymond White teaches him that legal freedom does not end the reach of kidnappers, slaveholders, or family separation. Raymond's brother Otha lives with the pain of relatives still held in bondage, and planned rescues show Hiram both the courage and the cost of the network's work. In the free city he also encounters Black institutions and arguments about how liberation should be pursued. Hiram becomes a useful agent because of his memory and ability to move between social worlds, but he remains preoccupied with Sophia, Thena, and those left at Lockless. An attempted family rescue ends in loss, reinforcing that ordinary routes can fail even when carefully prepared.

Hiram meets Harriet Tubman, known within the Underground as Moses, and learns that she can perform the same extraordinary passage he once experienced. She calls it Conduction and demonstrates that it is powered not by detached recollection but by a living connection to people and stories. Working beside her during a dangerous rescue, Hiram sees Conduction carry people across distance through water and memory. He begins to understand why the blank space surrounding Rose has blocked his control: the loss he has avoided is also the source he must face. With a clearer grasp of his gift and of the Underground's purpose, he prepares to return to Virginia, where Lockless is weakening and Sophia remains in danger.

Back in Virginia, Hiram works within Corinne's network while navigating Howell's failing health and the threat that people at Lockless will be sold. He finds Sophia and learns that she has a young daughter, Caroline; he chooses a future with both of them rather than treating the child as an obstacle to their old hopes. Hiram uses the Underground's leverage, his knowledge of the Walker family, and his growing command of Conduction to bring Sophia and Caroline to safety at Lockless. He finally recovers the emotional truth bound to Rose and uses memory as a route rather than a wound. After Howell dies, Lockless is converted into an Underground station. Hiram reunites Thena with family from whom slavery separated her, settles with Sophia and Caroline, and continues conducting other people toward freedom. The plantation survives, but its function is transformed from holding and selling people to helping them escape.

Hiram returns to Virginia as an agent of the Underground, determined to free Sophia and protect the remaining people at Lockless as Howell's health and the estate decline. He learns that Sophia has a daughter, Caroline, and accepts both of them as his family. Working through Corinne's influence and his own intimate knowledge of the plantation, he prevents their sale and brings them back to Lockless. After Howell dies, the estate becomes a station in the Underground rather than the inheritance Maynard was meant to preserve. Hiram also uses Conduction to reunite Thena with family torn from her decades earlier, drawing on recovered memory instead of trying to escape it. He remains with Sophia and Caroline while helping others travel north. Lockless still carries the history of enslavement, but its purpose has been reversed: the place from which Hiram's mother and so many others were taken now supports passage toward freedom.
