Tiffany Aching, a practical nine-year-old shepherd's granddaughter on the chalk downs called the Chalk, discovers she has a talent for witchcraft just as strange creatures from Fairyland begin intruding on her world. When her little brother Wentworth is stolen away by the Queen of Fairyland, Tiffany sets out to rescue him, armed with common sense, a frying pan, and the fierce help of the Nac Mac Feegle, the tiny blue Wee Free Men who guard the downland. Drawing courage and strength from the memory of her formidable grandmother, Granny Aching, she crosses into Fairyland, a cold country of shifting dreams and illusions. There she finds not only Wentworth but Roland, the Baron's son, lost before her. Tiffany learns to use clear sight and self-awareness to see through the Queen's glamours and turn the fairy magic against itself. She confronts the Queen directly, defeats her through wit, will, and her deep bond with her home ground, and drives her out of the world. Returning with both children safe, Tiffany is quietly recognized by the wider community of witches and set on the path to being trained.

Tiffany Aching is a clever, practical nine-year-old who lives on her family's sheep farm on the Chalk, a stretch of chalk downland where her late grandmother, Granny Aching, was once the respected shepherd and, in her quiet way, its guardian. Tiffany takes after her, watchful and sensible, and she begins to notice that things are wrong: a monster rises out of the river, and other creatures that belong to old stories start appearing where they should not. She meets Miss Tick, a witch traveling in disguise who tests her and recognizes her talent. Miss Tick warns her that the wall between the ordinary world and Fairyland is wearing thin, that something is pressing through, and that the Chalk has no witch of its own to protect it, no one but Tiffany herself.

Tiffany finds unexpected allies in the Nac Mac Feegle, the Wee Free Men: tiny, blue-skinned, red-haired warriors, fearless, thieving, and endlessly ready for a fight, who guard the downland and come to see her as their hag, a witch to be protected. Then the intrusions turn personal. The Queen of Fairyland steals Tiffany's small brother Wentworth away into her realm, and Tiffany, though she is often exasperated by him, refuses to abandon him. Determined to get him back, she resolves to go into Fairyland after him. Along the way she reflects more and more on Granny Aching, understanding better the kind of woman her grandmother was and the inheritance of duty and stubborn care that she has passed down, an inheritance Tiffany is now taking up.

Guided by the Feegle and by a grumbling talking toad who serves as their adviser, and armed with a frying pan and hard common sense, Tiffany crosses into Fairyland. It is a cold, shifting dream-country where nothing is quite solid and the Queen's illusions try to trap the unwary in comfortable, false wishes. Tiffany presses on through its dangers and deceptions, keeping her wits about her where others would be lured into sleep. She searches for Wentworth and, in the process, discovers Roland, the Baron's son, who was carried off into Fairyland long before and left half-lost among its dreams. Tiffany begins to gather the captives to her, refusing the Queen's traps and steadily working her way toward the center of the Queen's power.

Tiffany learns to fight Fairyland on its own ground. Using her clear sight and her habit of watching her own thoughts, she sees through the Queen's glamours and dreams, recognizing the illusions for what they are and refusing to be caught by them. She turns the fairy magic's own tricks back on it, using the Queen's dreams against her rather than being consumed by them. Drawing strength from her memories of the Chalk and of Granny Aching, and backed by the ferocious loyalty of the Feegle, she grows steadily more sure of her own power and more dangerous to the Queen, closing in on the confrontation that will decide whether she and the stolen children ever leave Fairyland at all.

Standing on the strength of who she is and where she comes from, and refusing every illusion the Queen offers, she overcomes her through wit, will, and her deep-rooted bond with her home ground. She frees her brother Wentworth and the Baron's son Roland, and drives the Queen back out of the human world, closing the way behind her. The children are brought safely home to the Chalk. In the aftermath, senior witches who have been quietly watching, among them the famous Granny Weatherwax, acknowledge what Tiffany has accomplished and the guardian she is becoming, following in Granny Aching's footsteps. Recognized now as a witch in the making and as the protector of the Chalk, Tiffany is set on the road to proper training, returning to ordinary life aware at last of her own strength.

Tiffany reaches the heart of Fairyland and faces its Queen, a being who rules through beautiful, hollow dreams and the theft of what others love. Refusing to be lost in the Queen's illusions, Tiffany uses what she calls First Sight and Second Thoughts, the ability to see what is really there and to watch her own thinking, together with the strength she draws from the Chalk and from the memory of Granny Aching, to break the Queen's power. She rescues her brother Wentworth and the Baron's son Roland, and drives the Queen back out of the human world, sealing the way behind her. The children are returned safely to the Chalk. In the aftermath, senior witches who have been watching, among them the renowned Granny Weatherwax, quietly acknowledge what Tiffany has done and the promise she shows. Tiffany is recognized as a witch in the making and as the Chalk's own guardian in the tradition of her grandmother, and arrangements are set in motion for her proper training. She returns to ordinary farm life changed, aware now of who she is and what she is capable of.
