A young Scotsman visiting the Canadian wilderness with his uncle's hunting party. Educated and imaginative but inexperienced in the deep forest, he accompanies Défago away from the main camp and becomes the principal witness to the guide's disappearance.

A French Canadian woodsman hired to guide the hunters. He is exceptionally capable in the forest, usually quiet and self-possessed, yet certain remote places and old northern stories disturb him more than he is willing to explain.

Simpson's uncle, a Scottish doctor who organizes the expedition and approaches unusual claims with scientific skepticism. His practical authority makes him the person Simpson seeks when the trip into the forest goes wrong.

An experienced Canadian hunter who joins Dr. Cathcart's party. Direct and knowledgeable about wilderness travel, he remains at the main camp with the doctor when Simpson and Défago depart to search another area.

The Indigenous cook who maintains the hunters' main camp. He is attentive to signs the visiting sportsmen dismiss and recognizes a danger in the forest without needing the outsiders' explanations.
