The Wise Man's Fear covers the second day of Kvothe's story. Still a student at the University, he continues his feud with Ambrose, his money troubles, and his frustrating pursuit of Denna, until he takes a leave of absence and travels to the kingdom of Vintas to seek the patronage of the powerful Maer Alveron. He wins the Maer's confidence by helping him secure a highborn wife and by exposing a poisoner at his court, then is sent to destroy a band of dangerous highwaymen in the great forest. After accomplishing this, Kvothe strays into the Fae and survives a legendary encounter with the beautiful and deadly Felurian, emerging with rare gifts, along with an unsettling meeting with a malicious oracle. He then travels to the secretive land of the Adem to master their renowned fighting art and their philosophy, slowly earning their guarded respect. Along the way he gathers more tantalizing hints about the Chandrian and the Amyr. Kvothe returns greatly changed, his abilities and his legend expanded, to the Maer and then the University, and the second day of telling closes with his story still unfinished.

Previously, in The Name of the Wind (the first day of Kvothe's story): The famous, now-hidden Kvothe, living as a country innkeeper under the name Kote, was persuaded by a scribe to tell the true tale of his life over three days. He recounted his happy childhood among a family troupe of traveling performers and his first lessons in magic from the arcanist Abenthy, until the mythical Chandrian slaughtered his entire troupe over an old song. Orphaned, he survived years of poverty as a street child in the city of Tarbean before winning admission, young and penniless, to the University, a great school of magic. There he studied sympathy and artificing, was banned from the restricted Archives after clashing with the wealthy student Ambrose, scraped for money through the moneylender Devi, made loyal friends in Wilem and Simmon, discovered the fragile girl Auri living beneath the school, and fell for the elusive Denna. A journey to the town of Trebon let him glimpse the Chandrian and gather hints about the shadowy order called the Amyr. The first day ended with his greater story still unfinished.

The second day opens with Kvothe still at the University, where his bitter feud with Ambrose continues, his money troubles persist, and his frustrating pursuit of the ever-vanishing Denna goes on. His unusual talents and recklessness keep drawing both admiration and danger. Eventually, to escape mounting pressures and to widen his prospects, Kvothe arranges a term of leave from the University and sets out to travel abroad, journeying toward the kingdom of Vintas in hopes of winning the patronage of a powerful nobleman.

In Vintas, Kvothe enters the service of the Maer Alveron, a powerful and exacting lord, at his seat in the city of Severen. He gradually wins the Maer's trust, helping him court and secure a highborn bride and uncovering a poisoner and treachery within his court. As a reward and a test, the Maer sends Kvothe into the wild forest of the Eld to hunt down a band of dangerous highwaymen preying on the roads. Kvothe leads a small company on the difficult mission, among them a quiet, deadly mercenary of the reclusive Adem people, and against long odds they track and destroy the bandits.

After the bandit hunt, Kvothe strays into the Fae and survives a legendary, perilous encounter with the beautiful faerie Felurian, emerging with a magical cloak and rare knowledge, as well as a disturbing meeting with a malicious, all-seeing being. He then journeys to the distant homeland of the Adem to study their famed martial art and their philosophy of restraint under a demanding teacher, slowly earning their guarded respect and a name of his own among them. He gathers further fragments about the Chandrian and the Amyr but solves no central mystery. Returning through the mortal world, he deals with men falsely posing as members of his own people, then comes back first to the Maer and finally toward the University, his skills and his growing legend much enlarged. The second day of storytelling ends with his tale, and the explanation of his eventual fall, still unfinished.

The second day of Kvothe's account ends with him far more accomplished, and far more dangerous, than the raw student who began it. Over the course of the book he leaves the University to serve the Maer Alveron in Vintas, wins the lord's trust and patronage, and survives being sent to destroy a band of highwaymen in the Eld. He then endures an encounter with the legendary faerie Felurian, gaining a magical cloak and unusual knowledge, and travels to the reticent Adem people to master their martial art and their philosophy of restraint, earning a sword and a measure of their respect. He also has a fateful, troubling meeting with a malicious, all-seeing being in the Fae that casts a long shadow over what follows, and gathers further fragments about the Chandrian and the hidden Amyr, though the central mysteries remain unsolved. Kvothe returns to the Maer, then toward the University, his reputation and abilities vastly grown and the seeds of his later fame and infamy now clearly planted. In the present-day frame, the man living as the innkeeper Kote finishes his second day of storytelling; his companion Bast remains anxious, the wider world grows more troubled, and a full third day of the tale, along with the account of his final downfall, still lies ahead.
